    Overview

    The ELK-E27CB is the main control board for the ELK E27 Alarm Engine®, a modern hybrid security and automation controller supporting hardwired, wireless, or hybrid input configurations. This hardware guide covers board layout, wiring terminals, and basic setup for connecting the E27 to power, sensors, and your network.

    Specifications

    • Input capacity: 128 total zones (hardwired, wireless, or hybrid); 16 hardwired on-board zones
    • Supports up to 3 two-wire smoke detector zones
    • On-board outputs: 2 alarm speaker outputs, 1 Form “C” relay, and 10 programmable 12VDC voltage outputs (50 mA each)
    • Partitions: up to 8
    • User codes: up to 199, with assignable authority levels
    • Maximum keypads: 8
    • Power supply: 2.5 Amp, with master cutoff switch and low-battery cutoff

    Getting Started

    Before installation, confirm the following:

    • You have an account/login for the ElkConnect cloud portal — E27 controls must be registered and assigned through the ElkConnect portal.
    • You have downloaded the ElkConnect app (available for Android and iOS) — used to configure the E27 control.

    Wiring & Hookup Overview

    Before making any connections, turn the E27 master power switch OFF. Refer to the E27 Board Layout Diagram for terminal locations.

    • Connect sensors to hardwired zone inputs (Z1–Z16). Default zone configuration requires 2.2K Ohm EOL resistors. For sensors that require power (e.g., motion detectors), use the VAUX auxiliary power terminals and observe polarity.
    • Zones 14, 15, or 16 can be configured for 2-wire smoke detectors using jumpers JP5, JP6, JP7 — set the corresponding jumper to 2W.
    • The E27 must be connected to a Wi-Fi enabled network to work with the ElkConnect app. Three connection methods are supported:
      • Connect the Ethernet port to a Wi-Fi enabled router/switch using a standard network patch cable.
      • Connect a Wi-Fi adapter (ELK-AEWF) to the E27 board and use Wi-Fi Access Point Mode to connect to the client's Wi-Fi network.
      • Connect a Wi-Fi adapter to the E27 board and use WPS to connect to the client's Wi-Fi network.
    • If desired, connect the interior speaker negative to ALRM 1 and speaker positive to +12V ALRM.
    • Connect the standby battery to the battery leads, observing polarity.
    • Connect the 14 VDC power supply (ELK-P1426) to the DC input terminals, observing polarity. Do not connect to an AC transformer or a switched outlet.
    • Turn the E27 on using the master power switch. The status display should show “A.” followed by the IP address, then “E.no” (no errors). If error codes appear, power down and refer to the E27 Knowledge Center for troubleshooting.

    Board Layout & Key Components

    Component Description
    Ethernet Port Provides hardwired connection to LAN/Internet using a standard network patch cable to a router or switch.
    Optional Wireless Module Slot for a supported wireless receiver module; refer to the Knowledge Center for compatible modules.
    Z-Wave Connector Connector for the optional ELK-AEZW Z-Wave module.
    Wi-Fi Connector Connector for the optional ELK-AEWF Wi-Fi adapter.
    J16 – Programmable Outputs 1–10 12VDC switched positive general-purpose outputs, rated at 50mA.
    Output 11 (Relay) Programmable general-purpose relay, rated at 4 Amps @ 12–24 VDC (dry contacts).
    Supervised ALARM Outputs (ALM1/ALM2) For speakers only (4–8 ohms). If not used, install a 2.2K Ohm resistor to avoid an alarm output trouble condition. Do not place a direct short across the alarm output terminals.
    RS-485 Data Bus (J6, BUS A/B) 4-wire data bus for connection of peripheral devices including keypads and expanders. Total length of 2 home runs must not exceed 4,000 ft. JP1 is the terminating jumper for the RS-485 bus; J6 provides temporary plug-in jacks for local testing.
    DC Power Input 14 VDC Power Supply (ELK-P1426) input. Do NOT connect to an AC transformer or switched outlet. Observe polarity; 18 AWG minimum wire.
    Standby Battery 12V lead-acid battery input. Replace every 3–5 years using ELK-1280 (12V 8Ah) or ELK-12180 (12V 18Ah) or equivalent.
    Master Power Switch Disconnects DC power supply and standby battery from the control.
    Clock Battery 3V Lithium clock battery (CR2032), life expectancy of 10 years. Replace only with the exact model available at most electronics/camera retailers. Caution: lithium battery may explode if mistreated — do not recharge, disassemble, or dispose of in fire.
    SD Memory Card Slot Provides additional storage for event log data. SD cards are available from most electronics and camera retailers.
    Configuration Switch For details on the configuration switch functions, refer to the E27 product manual.
    Status/Diagnostic Display Displays normal status, error codes, and other diagnostic information. See the E27 product manual for details.

    Zone Wiring Notes

    • Each of the 16 hardwired zones uses a 2200 Ohm EOL resistor by default (color code: Red, Red, Red, Gold for quality).
    • An alternate 820 Ohm EOL resistor color code is also referenced (Gray, Red, Brown, Gold) — confirm which value your installation requires.
    • 4-wire smoke detectors can be wired to any zone input with N.O. alarm contacts and a UL-listed EOL supervision relay.
    • 2-wire smoke detectors require zones 14, 15, or 16 with the corresponding JP5/JP6/JP7 jumper set to 2W.
    • Keep smoke detector covers free from dust and dirt using a dry or lightly damp cloth; clean the detector interior or replace the optical chamber per the smoke detector manufacturer's instructions.
    • Testing of the system should be performed regularly with the primary DC power de-energized. Control panel specifications are subject to change without notice.

    Compliance

    This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada's licence-exempt RSS standards. Operation is subject to standard interference conditions. This equipment has been tested and found to comply with Class B digital device limits, providing reasonable protection against harmful interference in residential installations. Changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the user's authority to operate the equipment. CAN ICES-3 (B)/NMB-3(B).

    Limited Warranty

    The E27 Alarm Engine (ELK-E27CB) is warranted to be free from defects in workmanship for a period of 2 years from the date of manufacture. Elk makes no warranty, express or implied, including that of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose with regard to batteries used with wireless devices.
