    Complete technical manual for the Ecolink GDZW7-ECO Z-Wave Plus Long Range Garage Door Controller — a security device for wirelessly controlling and monitoring a garage door via a paired tilt sensor.

    Product Overview

    The Garage Door Controller monitors and reports the garage door's state via a paired wireless (or wired) tilt sensor, and can also detect when the door is actively moving using an accelerometer to sense specific vibration patterns. It may ignore control commands it deems unsafe to execute.

    Installation Overview

    1. Mount the GDZW7-ECO to the garage door opener.
    2. Mount the Door Sensor to the door (or optionally use a hard-wired reed switch).
    3. Pair the GDZW7-ECO to the Garage Door Opener — either wirelessly, or hard-wired to the opener's button terminals.
    4. Pair the GDZW7-ECO to a Z-Wave enabled Hub/Security Panel.
    5. Test that it can open/close the door via test mode.
    6. Test that it can be controlled via the Z-Wave network.

    Installation with Garage Door Opener

    Two connection methods: hard-wired to the opener's button terminals, or wireless activation paired as a remote.

    Hard-Wired Method

    1. Locate the two wires running from the garage door opener's button to the motor.
    2. Connect the provided GDZW7-ECO screw-terminal wires to the same button terminals on the rear of the motor.
    3. Test by holding the Tilt button on the GDZW7-ECO for 2 seconds — the relay will short the terminals as if it were the button.

    Security+ V1 Method

    1. Ensure the GDZW7-ECO is in Security+ V1 mode by holding the Hub button for 2 seconds (speaker beeps once, LED blinks once for V1, twice for V2).
    2. Press the pairing button on the rear of the opener motor (usually a colored button, may have an indicator LED).
    3. Press and hold the Tilt button for 2 seconds — speaker beeps once, GDZW7-ECO transmits a Security+ V1 signal; the opener's LED should go out.
    4. Press and hold the Tilt button for 2 seconds again to send a second signal — the opener should move if successful.

    Security+ V2 Method

    1. Ensure the GDZW7-ECO is in Security+ V2 mode (speaker beeps twice, LED blinks twice).
    2. Press the pairing button on the rear of the opener motor (usually yellow).
    3. Press and hold the Tilt button for 2 seconds — speaker beeps twice, transmits a Security+ V2 signal; opener LED goes out.
    4. Press and hold the Tilt button again for 2 seconds to send a second signal — the opener should move if successful.

    Adding to / Removing from a Z-Wave Network

    When powered up and not yet included, the Status LED blinks green twice every second, indicating it's ready for SmartStart, Classic Inclusion, or Network Wide Inclusion. Note: To enable Long Range mode (if supported by the controller), you must add the device via the Smart Start QR-Code.

    Adding via Smart Start

    1. (Optional) Unplug the GDZW7-ECO from power.
    2. On your Z-Wave Controller's app, follow instructions for adding via QR-Code / Smart Start.
    3. If unplugged, plug the power back in. It may take a few minutes to be added.

    Adding via Classic Inclusion / Network-Wide Inclusion

    1. Locate the PIN Code (DSK) below the Smart Start QR-Code on the box and device.
    2. Put the Z-Wave controller into manual/classic inclusion mode.
    3. Press the HUB button once on the GDZW7-ECO — it will attempt to add itself.
    4. Enter the PIN Code (DSK) into the controller's UI when prompted (required for S2).

    While adding: Status LED blinks green rapidly. Success: beeps, LED green for 3 seconds. Failure: beeps, LED red for 3 seconds.

    Removing from a Z-Wave Network

    If the Status LED is NOT blinking twice/second on power-up, the device is included in a network and can be removed via exclusion or factory reset.

    1. Put the Z-Wave controller into removal/exclusion mode.
    2. Press the HUB button once.
    3. On success: beeps, LED turns red for 3 seconds, then resumes blinking green twice/second (ready to be added again).

    Factory Reset

    Resets to factory defaults and resets the wireless door sensor pairing to the original one. Only works if the device is already added to a Z-Wave network.

    1. Insert a paperclip into the pin-hole and hold the reset button for 10 seconds (LED blinks red continuously; releasing early merely restarts the software).
    2. LED turns green for 5 seconds when complete.

    A factory reset erases: the Z-Wave network pairing, all custom settings, and the wireless door sensor pairing (if different from the factory-shipped sensor — the new sensor must be re-paired).

    Pairing a New Wireless Door Sensor

    The GDZW7-ECO ships with a pre-paired sensor — only pair a new/different one if needed.

    1. Press the Tilt button once (short beep, LED blinks yellow continuously — Sensor Pairing Mode).
    2. Remove the pull-tab from the Wireless Door Sensor, or reinsert its battery.
    3. Success: warning light blinks white and beeps for 1 second.

    Exit pairing mode by successfully pairing, timing out, or pressing the Tilt button again.

    Adding an External Contact

    Alternatively, use an external contact (e.g. reed switch) to monitor garage door state:

    1. Connect the external contact's wires to the GDZW7-ECO's blue terminal block.
    2. Press the Tilt button once (Sensor Pairing Mode, yellow LED).
    3. Trigger the external contact to the "open" state.
    4. Success: warning light blinks white and beeps for 1 second.

    UL Compliance for Unattended Operation

    To comply with UL requirements, before closing the door the GDZW7-ECO beeps and flashes a bright white warning light for a configurable wait period. If it senses motor vibration during this time, it continues to beep/flash for the rest of the wait period, then cancels the operation with a long tone (assuming the motor already started moving for another reason). Vibration sensitivity is adjustable if false cancellations occur too often.

    Basic Command Class mapping: mapped to Barrier Operator Command Class — a Basic Set is equivalent to a Barrier Operator Set. A Barrier Operator Report of 0x00 maps to a Basic Report of 0x00; any state >0x00 maps to a Basic Report of 0xFF.

    Association

    Supports one "Lifeline" association group (one node). All unsolicited Z-Wave messages (Barrier Operator, Device Reset Locally, Indicator, Notification) go to the Lifeline node.

    Barrier Operator

    Controls/queries garage door status. A Set of 0xFF initiates an unattended open; 0x00 initiates an unattended close. Before closing, there's a minimum 5-second wait (warning light flashes, speaker beeps) — if the door state changes or is active during this wait, the close command is ignored.

    The controller will NOT respond to Set commands if:

    • No wireless door sensor is paired
    • The wireless door sensor counter is out of sync
    • The wireless door sensor is lost (no signal heard in 2 hours)
    • The wireless door sensor is in the wrong state

    A timeout error occurs if the sensor doesn't change state after an open/close command — subsequent commands are ignored until the door is manually operated and the tilt sensor changes state. When an ignored command occurs, the warning light blinks 3 times. (The "Stopped" state doesn't exist since the tilt sensor only reports open/closed.)

    Multilevel Sensor (Temperature)

    Temperature is reported via the Multilevel Sensor Command Class, polled every 30 seconds. A report is sent on any temperature change, or if no change has occurred in the past hour. Reported in Celsius with precision of 1 decimal (e.g. 212 = 21.2°C).

    Troubleshooting

    Problem Possible Cause Solution
    Unable to add device to Z-Wave network Not properly excluded from a previous network Put the controller into exclusion mode and press the Hub button, or factory reset the device.
    Z-Wave open/close does nothing, warning light flashes 3x Tilt sensor lost, tampered, counter out of sync, or a previous open/close timed out Check the Notification Report for the specific cause. If tampered, ensure the sensor cover is closed properly. Otherwise, manually operate the door via the wall console to resync the tilt sensor.
