Enclosure for Larger In-Ceiling Speaker

Designed to protect a larger in-ceiling speaker from moisture and other damaging elements, the patented BackBoxx POPP™ In-Ceiling Speaker Surround provides up to and over 9-1/2 inches in depth for a large speaker magnet. The BackBoxx POPP (AKA The Big Boss) is a specialized version of the original BackBoxx, with an added soft, flexible back wall bubble that "POPPs." This back wall bubble, or dome, can be adjusted from 5.5 inches deep all the way to 9.5 inches deep, as needed.

  • Protects larger in-ceiling speaker from harmful moisture, fiberglass, dirt, etc.
  • Adjustable back wall bubble adjusts from 5.5" to 9.5" deep
  • Attaches quickly to studs with staple gun
  • Keeps loose insulation out of eyes while installing speakers
  • Maintains vapor barrier integrity to meet building codes
  • Rugged and lightweight, yet flexible in cold temperatures

The convex back wall design also offers the added benefit of eliminating the need for acoustical dampening, because back-pressure sound waves are dispersed for any depth of speaker. Furthermore, the BackBoxx POPP maintains vapor barrier integrity, while helping installers meet building codes and keep loose insulation out of their eyes while installing speakers.

No Rattle Caused by Sound Waves

When sound is pumping out of your speaker, the BackBoxx POPP does not rattle thanks to its structural integrity and thoughtful construction. Its flexible back wall dome is intended to contact the speaker magnet, helping to diffuse any sound back-waves. The dome also supports the BackBoxx POPP under the load of blown-in insulation.

Rattling can be further prevented with the optional use of four KrushGuard inserts (sold separately, see photo below) to support the installer during the spray-foam insulation process. Once the spray-foam has cured, the BackBoxx adheres to the insulation and will not rattle.

Effect on Acoustics of Speakers

When in-wall and in-ceiling speakers are installed into open wall cavities, or open attic spaces, some of the richness of the sound is "lost." By putting an open-back speaker into a sealed space, such as the BackBoxx POPP, you help the acoustics of the speaker become more defined.

When it is desirable for large-area speakers to be used in conjunction with a BackBoxx, it is recommended to use BackStopp acoustic inserts (sold separately) to absorb some of the extra sound waves that large drivers can generate. Using the BackStopp on any size speaker will clarify the sound and provide the best acoustic response possible.

Installation Details

For a standard installation, the BackBoxx POPP installs vertically into a 16-inch-on-center wall cavity, or horizontally into 24-inch-on-center ceiling joists. If the BackBoxx needs to be installed in joists more closely spaced than 24 inches, you can cut the BackBoxx to fit. The BackBoxx installs from the front side of the joists, easily attaching to studs with a staple gun, with no assembly required.

Additional Features

  • Signals to other trade professionals that technology will be installed
  • Meets and exceeds 2012 IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) requirements
  • Self-extinguishes when exposed to open flame

NOTE: Not recommended for installation in commercial buildings due to lack of official fire rating. Since BackBoxx products are designed to be installed behind the fire barrier (such as drywall) in residential applications, there is no requirement for BackBoxx products to carry a fire rating.
