Installation and programming instructions for the Yale Assure Lever Key Free Touchscreen deadbolt lock (YRL256) — a keyless-entry lever lock with touchscreen keypad and optional Z-Wave/ZigBee network module.

Failure to follow these instructions could result in damage to the product and void the factory warranty. Download the Bilt app for interactive step-by-step installation instructions and product registration.

    Tools Needed

Standard Phillips head screwdriver. For new doors or adjusting existing door prep: drill, wood mortise chisel, utility knife, pencil, tape measure, level, and the included door template.

    Door Measurement Requirements

    • Backset: 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60mm or 70mm)
    • Cross-bore diameter: 2-1/8" (54mm)
    • Door thickness: 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" (35mm to 44.5mm)
    • Edge-bore diameter: 1" (25mm), drilled 1" (25mm) deep

Tip: Drill holes halfway through the door, then complete from the other side to prevent splitting.

    Determining Door Handing

Face a door swinging open away from you (inswinging): if it opens to the right, it's a right-hand door; if it opens to the left, it's a left-hand door. Face a door swinging open toward you (outswinging): if it opens to the right, it's a right-hand reverse door; if left, it's a left-hand reverse door. The curve of the latchbolt must contact the strike plate first.

    Programming Instructions

The Master Entry Code must be created before any further programming. Max user codes: 250 with the optional Smart Module installed, or 25 without.

    1. Creating the Master Entry Code

Required upon installation or after a factory reset — the lock cannot be programmed or used until this is complete.

    1. Touch the Yale logo/screen to wake the lock — it displays "Register Master Code. Press the gear key to continue."
    2. Press the gear key.
    3. Enter a 4–8 digit PIN followed by the gear key. The lock confirms "Registered."

    2. Creating User Entry Codes

The Master Entry Code must exist first. Max 250 codes with Smart Module, 25 without.

    1. Enter the Master Entry Code, press the gear key. Lock responds: "Menu mode, enter number, press the gear key to continue."
    2. Follow the on-screen/voice prompts to select User PIN Code Registration, enter a 4–8 digit entry code, and press the gear key to confirm (code flashes to confirm).
    3. To add more user codes, repeat the entry process. To end programming, press the gear key to exit.

    3. Unlocking with an Entry Code

Enter the entry code and press the gear key. Keep a code chart (Master + User Names/Codes) for reference; duplicate as needed for household records.

Feature Programming Menu (via Master Entry Code)

    1. Touch the Yale logo or screen with the back of your hand or palm to activate.
    2. Enter the 4–8 digit master entry code followed by the gear key. Lock responds: "Menu mode, enter number, press the gear key to continue."
    3. Enter the digit for the desired function, followed by the gear key, and follow voice prompts.

    Definitions & Features

    • All Code Lockout Mode: Enabled by the Master Code — restricts all user (non-Master) code access; a red locked padlock icon shows on screen while active.
    • Automatic Re-lock Time: Optional — when ON, the lock automatically re-locks 30 seconds after a successful unlock.
    • Inside Indicator Light: Shows locked status on the interior escutcheon; enable/disable via Advanced Lock Settings (menu #3).
    • Low Battery: Indicator flashes RED. If battery power is fully lost, apply a 9V battery (either direction) to the terminals below the touchscreen for backup power, then wake the lock and enter your code.
    • Master Entry Code: Required before any programming; also operates lock/unlock.
    • One Touch Locking: When the latch is retracted, activating the keypad extends the latch. When disabled, any valid entry code re-locks the lock.
    • Shutdown Time: After 5 wrong-code attempts, the unit shuts down (flashing RED) for 60 seconds.
    • Tamper Alert: Audible alarm sounds if someone attempts to forcibly remove the exterior lock.
    • User Entry Code: Max 250 codes with Smart Module, 25 without. When deleting, the screen shows the User Number, not the code itself.

    Programming Troubleshooting

    • Thumbturn doesn't rotate: Verify the lock is properly seated on the mounting bracket; confirm the square spindle's "Top" marking/arrow faces up; place the tailpiece vertically; verify the thumbturn is horizontal (unlocked).
    • Getting an alert when locking/unlocking electronically: Don't turn or depress the lever during operation (can trigger a jam alarm); check nothing obstructs the thumbturn; verify it rotates freely.
    • No sound when pressing buttons: Verify Audio is enabled in the programming tree; check the white cable connecting the keypad to the lock interior isn't pinched or broken.
    • Noise when rotating the thumbturn: A little noise is normal; cranking, grinding, or clicking suggests an installation issue to verify.
    • Locking pins won't retract for lever installation: If the thumbturn is vertical (locked), rotate it horizontal (unlocked) to retract the pins.

Optional Z-Wave Plus / ZigBee Network Module

Important: Remove the battery cover and batteries before inserting or removing the network module; reinstall batteries and cover afterward.

    Enrolling/Unenrolling (Z-Wave Plus or ZigBee)

    • To enroll (Inclusion Mode): Enter the Master PIN + gear key, then follow the two-key sequence shown on screen for network join.
    • To unenroll (Exclusion Mode): Enter the Master PIN + gear key, then follow the two-key sequence for network removal.
    • This is a security-enabled Z-Wave Plus / ZigBee product using encrypted messaging; requires a Security Enabled Controller to fully utilize functions. Compatible with any certified Z-Wave/ZigBee network.
    • Factory reset without a controller: see the Lock Installation Manual; use only when the network's primary controller is missing or inoperable.
    • System integrators: Z-Wave Plus association and parameter details at YaleHome.com/ZwavePlus.
