Yale Assure Lever Key Free Push Button (YRL236) — Installation & Programming Instructions

Complete installation and programming instructions for the Yale Assure Lever™ Key Free Push Button lock (YRL236), plus module install/programming guides for the optional Yale Z-Wave Plus® and ZigBee® network modules.

Before You Begin

Download the Bilt App for step-by-step installation instructions and to register your product. Failure to follow the manual's instructions could result in damage to the product and void the factory warranty.

Tools Needed

Standard Phillips head screwdriver. For new doors or adjusting existing door prep, you'll also need: drill, wood mortise chisel, utility knife, pencil, tape measure, and level (a paper template is included).

Checking Measurements

• Backset: 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60mm or 70mm)
• Bore diameter: 2-1/8" (54mm)
• Door thickness: 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" (35mm to 44.5mm)
• Latch hole diameter: 1" (25mm)

Determining Door Handing

Face a door swinging open away from you (inswinging). If it swings open to the right, it's a right hand door; if it swings left, it's a left hand door. Face a door swinging open toward you (outswinging). If it swings open to the right, it's a right hand reverse door; if it swings left, it's a left hand reverse door. The curve of the latchbolt must contact the strike plate first.

Installation Steps

1. Prepare door & frame (for new doors or adjusting existing prep) — drill the cross-bore and edge-bore holes to the dimensions above; drill halfway through the door from each side to prevent splitting.
2. Install the latch & strike plate (right/left hand as needed; through-bolt posts adjust for 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" backset).
3. Install the push button unit — the "TOP" mark must be on the top surface with the tailpiece in vertical position; incorrect orientation will cause the lock to fail.
4. Install the interior mounting plate.
5. Attach the cable assembly — ensure the cable is securely fastened into the adapter and routed through the cable hooks.
6. Install the interior lock (listen for the "click").
7. Install the exterior Key Free cylinder — the bar must be installed away from the latch.
8. Install the exterior lever — press the pin while installing so the lock is not damaged.
9. Install the interior lever — press the pin while installing so the lock is not damaged.
10. Test mechanical operation with the door open: test the thumbturn and both levers in locked and unlocked positions. If operation fails, recheck installation starting at step 3.
11. Install the optional Smart Module, if included (batteries must NOT be installed prior to inserting/removing the module).
12. Install batteries (4x AA alkaline) and the battery cover.

After installation, test push button operation with the door open. A Master Entry Code must be created upon installation (or after a factory reset) before the lock can be programmed or used.

Resetting Lock to Factory Default

Warning: resetting deletes all user codes, including the Master Entry Code, and restores all programming to factory defaults.

1. Remove the battery cover and batteries.
2. Remove the interior lock to access the reset button.
3. Re-insert 3 batteries and hold the reset button for 3 seconds.
4. While still holding the reset button, insert the 4th battery and hold for an additional 3 seconds.
5. Release the reset button.
6. Re-install the interior lock onto the door.

After a reset, creating the Master Entry Code is the only option available and must be done before any other programming.

Factory Settings

Note: Max user codes = 250 with Smart Module installed, or 25 without. Because this lock has no mechanical key override, Yale recommends using it in a home with additional entry points to avoid lockout situations (it does include a 9-volt battery jumper and low-battery warnings as safeguards).

Programming

1. Creating the Master Entry Code

Must be performed upon installation or after a factory reset, before any other use/programming. Press the programming key sequence, then enter a 4–8 digit Master Entry Code and confirm.

2. Creating User Entry Codes

Master Entry Code must be created first. Enter the Master Entry Code, initiate registration, then enter a 4–8 digit user code (the code flashes to confirm). Additional codes can be added in sequence; press the end-programming key when finished.

3. Unlocking with an Entry Code

Enter the entry code and press the confirm key to unlock.

Feature Programming (Menu Mode)

Enter the 4–8 digit Master Entry Code followed by the confirm key, then enter the digit corresponding to the desired function followed by confirm. Menu options include: Master PIN Code Setting, User PIN Code Registration (Register/Delete), Advanced Lock Settings (Automatic Re-lock timing, Inside Indicator Light, One Touch Locking, Audio Mode, All Code Lockout Mode), and Network Module Setting (join/exit network — appears only when a network module is installed).

Key Terms

• All Code Lockout Mode: enabled by the Master code; restricts all user (non-Master) code access. Attempting entry while active triggers a flash + Lockout alarm.
• Automatic Re-lock: optional; when on, the lock automatically re-locks 30 seconds after a successful unlock.
• Low Battery: Yale logo button lights RED when battery is low. If power is fully lost, apply a 9V battery (either direction) to the terminals below the keypad for backup power, then enter your code to unlock.
• One Touch Locking: when the latch is retracted, activating the keypad extends the latch during the re-lock window; when disabled, any valid code re-locks the lock.
• Shutdown Time / Wrong Code Entry Limit: after 5 failed code attempts, the unit shuts down (flashing RED) for 60 seconds.
• Tamper Alert: sounds an audible alarm if someone tries to forcibly remove the outside lock from the door.

Hardware Troubleshooting

• Tailpiece/spindle won't mate with interior escutcheon: confirm door thickness is 1-3/8"–1-3/4"; confirm the square spindle's "Top" marking and arrow face upward; place the tailpiece vertically; verify the thumbturn is horizontal (unlocked).
• Thumbturn won't rotate (electronically or physically): verify the interior lock is properly seated on the mounting bracket; check spindle orientation as above.
• Alert when locking/unlocking electronically: don't turn or press the lever during operation (can trigger a jam alarm); ensure nothing blocks the thumbturn from rotating freely.
• No sound on keypress: verify Audio is enabled in the programming menu; check that the white cable connecting the keypad to the lock interior isn't pinched or broken.
• Noise when rotating thumbturn: a little noise is normal; grinding/clicking/cranking indicates an installation issue to check.
• Locking pins won't retract when installing levers: rotate the thumbturn from vertical (locked) to horizontal (unlocked) position.

Optional Network Modules

Yale Z-Wave Plus® Module

Remove batteries before inserting/removing the module, then reinstall batteries and cover. This is a security-enabled Z-Wave Plus device using encrypted messaging; it must be paired with a Security Enabled Z-Wave Controller to use all functions, and works alongside other certified Z-Wave devices from any manufacturer (non-battery nodes act as repeaters).

• Enroll (Inclusion Mode): enter the 4–8 digit Master PIN followed by confirm, then the enrollment key sequence.
• Unenroll (Exclusion Mode): enter the Master PIN followed by confirm, then the unenrollment key sequence.
• Factory reset without a controller: follow the Lock Installation Manual procedure; use only if the network's primary controller is missing or inoperable.

Yale ZigBee® Module

Remove battery cover and batteries before inserting/removing the module; reinstall batteries and cover afterward. This is a security-enabled ZigBee device that must be paired with a Security Enabled ZigBee Controller for full functionality, and interoperates with other certified ZigBee devices.

• Enroll: enter the Master PIN followed by confirm, then the enrollment key sequence.
• Unenroll: enter the Master PIN followed by confirm, then the unenrollment key sequence.
