Installation manual for the X10PRO WS4777 3-Way Toggle Style Wall Dimmer Switch Kit — controls incandescent bulbs from two or more switch locations with local On/Off, Bright/Dim, and X10 remote control.

Description

The WS4777 3-Way Toggle Style Wall Dimmer Switch Kit is designed to control incandescent bulbs only, rated 40 to 500W. A pushbutton provides local On/Off and Bright/Dim control on the Master switch, and a single pushbutton on the Slave Switch provides the same. A Power Cutoff Switch located directly below the Local On/Off pushbutton on the Master Switch is provided for bulb changing. Both switches should line up for normal operation.

Note: a 3-Way/4-Way system, by definition, means two or more existing wall switches that operate one single light (which can be multiple lights if they all come on together).

Do not use with: appliances, motors, low-voltage lights, or fluorescent lights. Requires 120VAC, 40–500W incandescent bulbs only — bulbs rated below 40W may flicker or operate erratically.

Optional / Supplementary Devices

• CS277 — add this Slave Switch for a 4-way setup.
• XPT2D — Wall Controller to add additional switch locations when no traveler wires exist (see XPT Installation Instructions).

X10 Protocol

House Code Dial: letters A–P. Unit Number Dial: numbers 1–16. Each X10 Receiver Module is set to a unique unit number (or an identical unit number, as desired). Each X10 Controller operating a specific set of Receiver Modules must be set to the same letter code as the Receivers it controls. The switch responds to the ALL LIGHTS ON command.

Electrical Protocol

Nearly all residential homes are wired split-phase — each 120V phase is not directly connected to the other. If an X10 Receiver doesn't respond to a remote Controller after installation, check that the breaker serving the Receiver is on the same phase as the Controller; if not, the breaker can be changed to the opposite phase. Alternatively, install a Phase Coupler to improve remote communications throughout the home (see www.x10pro.com → Technical Support → PLC Troubleshooting).

Installation — 3-Way Setup (WS4777 + CS277)

1. Turn power OFF at the circuit breaker.
2. Pull out the existing 3-way wall switches from the two switch boxes.
3. Remove the common-side wire (by itself) from the two switches. In one box that single wire is HOT (Line); in the other, it goes to the light (Switched Leg).
4. With the breaker ON, use a voltmeter between ground and each single wire to determine which reads 120V (HOT) and which reads 0V (goes to the light). Mark accordingly.
5. The Slave Switch (CS277) installs in the switch box with the HOT wire. The Master Switch (WS4777) installs in the box with the wire that goes to the light.
6. With the breaker OFF, remove the existing two wall switches. Three wires (minimum) remain in each box. At the Slave box: one is HOT, the other two are traveler wires. At the Master box: one is the Light wire, the other two are traveler wires.
7. Install the Slave Switch first: HOT wire goes to either BLUE wire, one Traveler wire to the other BLUE wire, and the second Traveler wire to the RED wire.
8. Install the Master Switch second: one HOT Traveler wire goes to BLACK, the second Traveler wire goes to RED, and the Light wire goes to BLUE.
9. Re-check all connections, turn power ON at the breaker, and turn the Power Cutoff Switch to ON.
10. Press the switch button once — the light should turn ON. Press again — it should turn OFF.
11. Control the switch with an X10 Remote Control Module (Desktop, Wireless Handheld, Security Panel, etc.). The default address is "A1" — use a small flat screwdriver to change the Code Dials if needed.
12. Attach switch cover plates. Full On/Off and Bright/Dim functions operate from all switches in the circuit.

Installation — 4-Way Setup (adding a second CS277)

Add one CS277 Slave Switch as a 4-way switch in conjunction with the WS4777 3-Way Wall Switch Kit.

1. Turn power OFF at the circuit breaker.
2. Pull out the existing 3-way and 4-way wall switches from all three switch boxes. Remove the common-side wire (by itself) from the two 3-way switches — one is HOT (Line), the other goes to the light (Switched Leg). The 4-way switch box will have 4 wires.
3. With the breaker ON, determine which single wire is HOT using a voltmeter, then mark accordingly.
4. The (first) Slave Switch (CS277) installs in the box with the HOT wire. The Master Switch (WS4777) installs in the box with the wire that goes to the light.
5. With the breaker OFF, remove the existing three wall switches. Three wires remain in each box except the middle box, which has 4 wires.
6. Install the first Slave Switch: HOT wire to either BLUE wire, one Traveler wire to the other BLUE wire, second Traveler wire to RED.
7. The middle box (between Master and last Slave) has two pairs of same-colored traveler wires (e.g. two blacks and two reds, or any similar combination).
8. Identify the color designated as the HOT traveler from the first slave box, and attach both BLUE wires of the second Slave to each of the same-colored HOT travelers. Attach the remaining similar-colored wires together to the RED wire on that switch.
9. Install the Master Switch last: one HOT Traveler wire to BLACK, second Traveler wire to RED, Light wire to BLUE.
10. Re-check connections, restore power, and turn the Power Cutoff Switch ON.
11. Test the switch (press once for ON, again for OFF).
12. Control via X10 Remote Control Module — default address "A1"; adjust Code Dials with a small flat screwdriver if needed.
13. Attach switch cover plates.

Soft Start On / Fade Off & Bright/Dim Control

• On/Off: a short key press turns the switch on at full dim, fading up to full intensity; another short press fades off (each fade takes about 3 seconds).
• Dimming from ON: press and hold to reach the desired dim level, then release. The dimming direction toggles on release (the next press-and-hold will brighten instead). A short press from any dimmed level fades the switch off.
• Resume behavior: a dimmed switch resumes its last intensity when turned back on (e.g. dimmed to 50%, turned off, resumes at 50%).
• Always resume full brightness: press and hold the key until the switch reaches full brightness before releasing; a subsequent short press will fade it off.

Any X10 Controller can remotely operate the full functions of the switch.
