    August 31, 2026 2 min read

X10 WS18A Single & 3-Way Wall Switch w/LED — setup and operating instructions, with CS277 Companion Switch for 3-way installs.

    Full text manual (for reference)

The X10 WS18A is a Single & 3-Way Wall Switch with LED indicator, designed to control lighting up to 500W. It replaces a standard single-pole switch, or with the CS277 Companion Switch (sold separately), operates as a 3-way switch where two switches control the same light.

    Key Notes

    • Max load: 500W. Bulbs rated below 6W may flicker or operate erratically — use a bulb rated 6W or greater from a different manufacturer if this occurs.
    • Push-button on each switch for local ON/OFF control.
    • For 4-way operation, consult the CS277 instruction sheet.
    • WARNING: A Neutral (NOT Ground) connection is required for the WS18A Master Switch.
    • The LED illuminates when the switch is OFF (faint glow to help locate it at night) and turns off when the switch is ON.

Installing the WS18A (Single Switch Applications)

    1. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker panel.
    2. Remove the wall plate and unscrew the existing switch from its box.
    3. Remove wires from the existing switch and connect them to the WS18A's black and blue wires using the supplied wire nuts.
    4. Connect the WS18A's white wire to Neutral (NOT Ground).
    5. Cap off the unused red wire with a wire nut. Cover with insulating tape if needed. Screw the switch into the wall box (don't replace the wall plate yet).

    Installing the WS18A + CS277 (3-Way Applications)

    1. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker panel.
    2. Remove wall plates and unscrew both existing switches. Identify the common wire at each switch (usually a different color terminal).
    3. Replace the primary switch with the WS18A (Master): connect the common wire to the WS18A's black wire. Connect the two remaining traveler wires to the WS18A's red and blue wires (red traveler, if present, goes to the WS18A's red wire).
    4. Connect the WS18A's white wire to Neutral (NOT Ground).
    5. Replace the other switch with the CS277 Companion Switch: connect the common wire to one of the CS277's blue wires. Connect the traveler wired to WS18A's red wire to the CS277's red wire. Connect the remaining traveler to the CS277's second blue wire.
    6. Screw both switches into their wall boxes (don't replace wall plates yet).

    Setup & Operation

    1. Using a small screwdriver, set the House Code dial to match your X10 controller(s) (A through P).
    2. Set the Unit Code dial to an unused code (1–16) controllable from any X10 controller.
    3. Refit the wall plates on both switches, then restore power at the breaker panel.
    4. Press the button to turn the module on/off; control it remotely from any X10 Controller using the house/unit code you set.
