  • X10 WS12A — Decorative Dimming Single-Pole/3-Way Wall Switch Manual

    August 31, 2026 3 min read

    X10 WS12A incandescent decorative-style dimming Single-Pole/3-Way Master Wall Switch, 40-500W.

    Full text manual (for reference)

The X10 WS12A is an incandescent, decorative-style dimming Single-Pole/3-Way Master Wall Switch rated for 40-500W. The decorative paddle allows local ON/OFF and Bright/Dim control, with soft-start on and fade-off dimming behavior, plus full X10 remote control support.

    Compatibility

    • Use with: Incandescent bulbs only (120V standard or 120V halogen), 40-500W. Lamps rated below 40W may flicker or operate erratically.
    • DO NOT use with: Fluorescent lighting, low-voltage lighting (inductive transformers), ceiling fan motors, etc.

    Optional / Supplementary Devices

    • XPDP-AL — Almond rocker paddle, package of 10
    • WS14A — Slave switch for existing 3-way installations (uses XPSP-AL almond rockers)
    • XPT2D — Alternate slave switch (transmitter) for existing or new 3-way/4-way installations

    X10 Protocol

    • House Code Dial: Letters A-P (default "A")
    • Unit Number Dial: Numbers 1-16 (default "1")
    • Responds to ALL LIGHTS ON command; full dimming capability with incandescent lighting
    • Code dials are located behind the paddle — remove the paddle with a small flat screwdriver at the side fulcrum point to access

    Electrical Note: Split-Phase Wiring

Nearly all residential homes are wired split-phase — each 120V phase is not directly connected to the other. If an X10 receiver doesn't respond to a remote controller after installation, check that the breaker serving the receiver is on the same phase as the controller. If not, either change the breaker to the opposite phase or install a Phase Coupler to improve remote communication throughout the home.

    Installation: Single-Pole Operation

    1. Turn power OFF at the circuit breaker.
    2. Pull out the existing wall switch from the switch box.
    3. Cap off the WS12A's RED wire — not used in this installation.
    4. Remove the existing switch. Two wires remain: one HOT, the other to the light/load (may be same color).
    5. With breaker ON, use a voltmeter between ground and each wire individually to determine which is HOT (120V vs. 0V).
    6. With breaker OFF, connect the HOT wire to the BLACK wire; connect the light/load wire to the BLUE wire.
    7. Recheck connections, restore power, and slide the Power Cutoff Switch to ON.
    8. Press the paddle once — light turns ON. Press and hold to dim. Press again to turn OFF.
    9. Control the switch with any X10 controller using the default address "A1" (change via the code dials behind the paddle if desired).
    10. Attach the switch cover plate.

Installation: 3-Way Operation (Existing Traveler Wires)

    1. Turn power OFF at the breaker. Pull out both existing 3-way switches.
    2. Remove the common-side wire (by itself) from each switch — one goes to HOT, one goes to the light.
    3. With breaker ON, use a voltmeter to determine which single wire is HOT; mark accordingly, then breaker OFF.
    4. Install the Slave Switch (WS14A, sold separately) in the box with the HOT wire: HOT wire and one traveler wire go to LIVE; the second traveler wire goes to SWITCH.
    5. Install the Master Switch (WS12A) in the box with the light/load wire: one HOT traveler goes to BLACK, the second traveler goes to RED, and the light wire goes to BLUE.
    6. Restore power, set Power Cutoff Switch to ON. Test both switches turn the light ON/OFF.
    7. Attach cover plates. Full on/off and bright/dim functions work from all switches in the circuit.

    4-Way / Alternate Installations

4-way circuits can be created using the WS12A plus two WS14A Slave Switches, or using the XPT2D Wall Transmitter for longer traveler-wire runs (the XPT2D provides ON/OFF and Bright/Dim over greater distances than the WS14A can reliably handle). New installations without existing traveler wires can use the XPT2D wired only to HOT and Neutral, communicating with the Master Switch over existing power wiring. See the full PDF for detailed wiring steps for each configuration.

    Dimming Behavior

    • Soft Start / Fade Off: A short paddle press turns the switch on at full dim and fades up to full intensity (~3 seconds); another short press fades off (~3 seconds).
    • Dimming from ON: Press and hold to reach the desired dim level, then release — the dimming direction toggles on the next press-and-hold. A short press from any dimmed level fades the switch off. The switch resumes its last dimmed level when turned back on.
    • To always resume full brightness on power-up, press and hold the paddle until full brightness is reached before releasing.
