  • X10 Personal Assistance System PA5900 — Owner's Manual

    August 31, 2026 4 min read

Full owner's manual for the X10 Personal Assistance System — a medical alert console with wireless pendant remotes and automatic telephone dialer.

    Full text manual (for reference)

    Overview

The X10 Personal Assistance System (PA5900) is a medical alert / emergency call system consisting of a Console with an automatic telephone dialer and up to 16 wireless Pendant Remotes. When the CALL button on a Pendant Remote is pressed, the Console dials pre-programmed phone numbers and plays a recorded voice message so a neighbor, friend, or relative can check in.

Important: The Console should be programmed to call a friend, relative, or neighbor who can listen in and determine if there is a real problem — not the police or other emergency services directly.

    Locating the Console

Choose a central location in the house with access to both a modular telephone jack and an AC outlet. Plug the power supply into an outlet that is NOT controlled by a wall switch (to avoid accidentally cutting power). Connect the included RJ11 telephone cord — ideally to a dedicated telephone line so the line is never busy when the Console needs to dial out. A "T" adapter (included) lets the Console share a line with an existing telephone if a dedicated line isn't practical.

Note: The Console is not designed to operate with an RJ31X-type telephone connection, and must not be connected to coin-operated/pulse-tone systems, party-line systems, or most electronic-key telephone systems.

    Installation

    • Backup battery: Slide off the battery compartment cover, clip in a 9V battery, and slide it into the compartment. The battery LED turns off once AC power is applied. It is not necessary to disconnect power when fitting/replacing the battery.
    • Cabling: Plug the power supply jack into the Console, plug into AC power, and connect the phone line via the included RJ11 cable.

    Registering a Pendant Remote

    1. Set the Console's slide switch to INSTALL
    2. Press CALL on the Pendant — the Console beeps once to confirm registration
    3. Return the Console slide switch to RUN

Up to 16 Pendant Remotes can be registered to one Console.

    Testing a Pendant Remote

    1. Set the Console slide switch to RUN
    2. Press CALL on the remote — the Console alarm sounds
    3. Press STOP to cancel the alarm (note: if the Console has already started dialing, it finishes the current call before cancelling)

    Programming Phone Numbers

Store up to four phone numbers (up to 12 digits each):

    1. Set the Console to INSTALL
    2. Press PROG
    3. Enter the phone number using the Console's keypad
    4. Press MEM, then press 1 to store in memory location 1
    5. Repeat (PROG → number → MEM → 2/3/4) for the remaining numbers

If only one number is desired, store the same number in all four memory locations.

    Recording a Voice Message

    1. Set the Console to INSTALL
    2. Press RECORD (the BUSY light turns on)
    3. Speak clearly into the microphone — up to 15 seconds of speech (e.g. "I've fallen and I can't get up, press 0 to listen in"). The BUSY light turns off after 15 seconds.
    4. Plug an earphone into the Console's side jack
    5. Set the Console to RUN to play back the message and confirm it sounds right
    6. To re-hear it, toggle the Console to INSTALL then back to RUN

    Battery Information

    • Pendant Remotes run ~2 years on a 3V lithium cell (CR2025); replace annually as a precaution. Replace within 30 seconds of removing the old battery to avoid needing to re-register; confirm by pressing STOP and listening for the Console's confirmation tone.
    • Console backup battery (9V alkaline) provides ~20 hours of backup during a power failure, and can be replaced at any time, even while powered. If both AC power and the battery fail, the Console loses its phone numbers and recorded message.

Clearing all remotes: Unplug the Console and remove the battery to clear all registered remotes from memory (you'll need to reprogram phone numbers and the voice message afterward).

    Troubleshooting

    Problem Solution
Alarm doesn't trip when CALL is pressed on the pendant Check the Console's slide switch is set to RUN; check the Pendant's battery indicator lights when CALL is pressed, replace battery if needed
Console's battery indicator is on Replace the 9V backup battery (provides ~20 hrs backup); replace at least yearly
Lost Pendant Remote Reinstall the complete system to prevent someone else from using the lost remote
System trips by itself A neighbor may have a compatible system on the same RF codes — reinstall the system to get different codes
Console doesn't dial out on CALL Verify emergency numbers are programmed; confirm the Console is connected to a working dial-tone line; check the Pendant's battery; confirm Console has power and a good backup battery
Console appears "locked up" If RECORD light is on, wait 15 sec (message playback after INSTALL→RUN). If not, the system may be in 75-second listen mode after someone answered a dial-out call and pressed a key — wait it out.
