Setup instructions for the X10 FireCracker™ CM17A — a wireless computer interface that lets your PC control X10 lights and appliances via remote control commands.

    Overview

    • Controls up to 256 lights and appliances instantly from your PC.
    • Connects to your PC's serial port and includes a pass-through port so you don't lose the port for other devices.
    • Works with any X10 Transceiver (RR501/TM751) and any X10 Module (sold separately).
    • Works with the FireCracker software (available at www.x10.com/software).
    • Up to 100 ft. range.

The FireCracker Computer Interface sends wireless RF signals from your PC to an X10 Transceiver (RR501 or TM751) or an X10 security system base receiver. The receiver then passes the signal onto your house wiring to control lights or appliances plugged into X10 modules (sold separately).

    Setup Steps

    1. Plug the FireCracker into your computer's serial port.
    2. If something was already plugged into that port, plug it into the FireCracker's pass-through port instead.
    3. Download the FireCracker program from www.x10.com/software.
    4. Run the Setup program to install the FireCracker software.
    5. Run the X10 FireCracker application.
    6. Select the COM port you're using and click "Try It." Click OK — an on-screen X10 PalmPad remote appears on your monitor.

    Using the On-Screen Remote

    • Right-click a button label to type in the name of the light or appliance it controls.
    • Click a button to turn the corresponding X10 Module on or off.
    • Click and hold to dim or brighten Lamp or Wall Switch modules.
    • Click to change the Housecode setting — set it to match your TM751/RR501 transceiver and X10 modules.
    • Click to control X10 modules set to units 1-8 or 9-16.

Right-click anywhere on the remote to access the extensive online help, which also opens the Test Communications menu (to change the COM port). You can also print labels matching the on-screen PalmPad to place on a physical PalmPad remote (sold separately), and toggle button-press sound effects. Users with accessibility software that can type keyboard commands can simply type commands like "A 1 ON" to control a module directly.
