    Overview

    The Winland TEMP°ALERT® MTA-2 is a mechanical temperature monitor that requires no power to operate. It uses a bimetallic coil sensing element and gold-plated dry contacts to trigger an alarm/notification device when temperature exceeds user-set high or low limits — ideal for freeze protection and general room temperature monitoring in non-condensing, indoor environments.

    Choosing a Location

    Consider room size, ventilation effectiveness, and critical monitoring areas when specifying the number and placement of Temp°Alert® units. If the building has an energy management system, a good rule of thumb is to install the MTA-2 near each thermostat. Mount on a wall or other vertical surface, well clear of windows, doors, and heat sources that could skew readings. For freeze protection, install at least one Temp°Alert® on every level of the home or business.

    Installation Steps

    1. Open the case: With the device facing you, turn it 90° to expose the left end. Grasp with your right hand, thumb on the left end above the seam, fingers on the right end. Press hard with your thumb to disengage the latching pin, then separate the two halves by pulling the device away from the base plate.
    2. Attach base plate to mounting surface: Position the base plate on the wall, mark the mounting hole centers, and mount using the included screws (predrill and use anchors if needed, depending on surface type).
    3. Select high and low set points: Each limit post is controlled by a locknut. Use a 5/16" nut driver or wrench to loosen (counterclockwise) the high and low adjustment posts, slide to the desired temperature setting, then retighten (clockwise) — avoid over-tightening.
    4. Make wiring connections: Use three-conductor stranded or solid wire to connect the MTA-2's COM/HI/LOW terminals to a control panel or dialer. The HI and LOW limit wires may be tied together under a single zone if you don't need to differentiate between high and low temperature notifications (e.g. Zone 1 for high limit exceeded, Zone 2 for low limit exceeded).
    5. Attach the front cover: Align the retaining tabs on the right edge of the case with the holes on the base plate, then press and swing the device back into place until it seats and the locking pin engages.

    Testing (Weekly Recommended)

    To manually test: loosen the locknut of one limit post and slide it toward the temperature indicator until it makes contact; temporarily tighten the locknut. This should activate the connected warning device. After testing, loosen the locknut, return the limit arm to its original set point, and retighten. Repeat with the second limit arm to verify both.

    Important

    Do not use the MTA-2 in a cooler or freezer — frost buildup and moisture can cause malfunction. For cooler/freezer applications, use a Winland EnviroAlert® or EnviroAlert Professional® device with a remote probe instead.
