Instruction/installation sheet for the On-Q/Legrand Category 5 Audio Keypad Volume Control with IR (P/N F7394-xx) — part of the legacy Category 5 Multi-Room Audio System, providing push-button volume, source, and mute control distributed over standard Category 5 cabling.

Overview

This Category 5 Audio Keypad Volume Control distributes audio and control signals over a single Category 5 cable, combined with other system components (a receiver, CD player, etc.) to create a whole-house audio system. On-Q/Legrand offers two types of Cat5 volume controls: the Amplified Volume Control (P/N F7399, rotary knob, IR-capable) and this Keypad Volume Control (P/N F7394, push buttons for volume, source select, and mute). One volume control is used per wired room; each terminates to Category 5 via a 110-style punchdown block on the rear.

Installation

Best done at both "Rough-in" (before drywall) and "Trim-out" (after drywall/paint):

• Rough-in: run a single Category 5 cable from the enclosure to a single-gang outlet box or mud ring at each volume control location.
• Trim-out: terminate each volume control's Cat5 cable using a standard 110-style punchdown tool, keeping untwisted pair length under ½" and ensuring clean cuts.

By default the keypad is set for "All Keypad" mode, required for Whole House commands to function when every volume control in the system is a keypad. If mixing knob-style and keypad-style controls, move the jumper on the circuit board (under the front plate, near the Mute button) from "All Keypad" to "Mix" — in Mixed systems keypads respond to Room commands only.

Speaker & Line Out Connections

• Speakers terminal: connect standard 8-ohm speakers, observing L+/L-/R+/R- polarity.
• Line Out terminal: connect a powered subwoofer or external amplifier; these terminals provide no amplification themselves, but the keypad's volume control still governs the output level.
• Volume trim potentiometers on the rear set max/min allowable volume and left/right balance. With the system on and music playing, turn both left/right trims fully counter-clockwise, then adjust clockwise (with volume turned all the way up) just up to the point before audio distortion appears.

Mounting & Self-Test

Test all connections before installing into the wall. Use the included screws to mount into a standard single-gang box. On initial power-up, the unit runs a self-test sequence: keypad backlights blink and increment on; each Source LED blinks green in sequence; the Mute LED blinks red; the Status/IR LED blinks green then red; volume LEDs light dim-to-bright in sequence; then all LEDs (including backlights) turn off, leaving the unit in the OFF state.

Operation

• Source button: in systems with a Multi-Source Input/Module, toggles to the next source with its LED lit; without Multi-Source capability, Source 1 stays lit and the button has no effect.
• Mute button: enters Mute mode (source LED, backlights, and volume LEDs off; red Mute LED lit; amplifier and Line Out muted). Press again to restore previous state. Press-and-hold also turns the unit off.
• Volume buttons: control both channels simultaneously — all LEDs lit = max volume, none lit = no volume.
• IR reception/transmission: receives remote IR between 10–110 kHz, passed through the whole audio system. Responds only to custom audio commands from the system's own remote (PN 7427); other commands pass through but are ignored (for controlling separate A/V equipment). In ROOM mode, only the keypad receiving the command responds; in WHOLE HOUSE mode, all keypads respond, timing out 30 seconds after the last key press (or exit early via the ROOM command). Note: sync all volume controls first by issuing a WHOLE HOUSE OFF command from an active keypad before relying on WHOLE HOUSE ON commands.
• Status/IR LED colors: Green = source activity, Red = Room IR activity, Orange = Whole House activity.
• Keypad brightness: Mute + Volume Up together increases backlight brightness; Mute + Volume Down decreases it.

Safety Precautions

• Only qualified personnel should service, move, or modify system components.
• Installation must conform to all local building and electrical codes.
• Do not power the system until all components are installed and wiring is properly terminated.
• Unplug the power transformer at the enclosure before any wiring changes.
• Keep components away from heat sources and moisture — moisture exposure voids the warranty.
• Clean cover plates only with a damp cloth — no vacuum, liquid, or aerosol cleaners.
