STI Stopper II Series (STI-1100 to STI-3150) — Installation Instructions

Installation instructions for the STI Stopper II® Series fire pull-station covers — models STI-1100, STI-1100RC, STI-1130, STI-1130RC, STI-1200, and STI-1230, plus the Indoor/Outdoor Weather Stopper models STI-1150, STI-1150RC, STI-1155, STI-1155RC, STI-1250, and STI-3150.

Overview

• Can be used as a guard against physical damage to a manual pull station, with or without the optional warning horn.
• Optional horn: 95 dB or 105 dB (measured at 1 foot).
• Standard red units have "In Case of Fire..." label unless specified with "no label" or "custom label" (extra charge for custom label).
• Typical working properties of polycarbonate: -40° to 250°F (-40° to 121°C).
• Three year guarantee against breakage of the polycarbonate housing in normal use (one year on electro-mechanical and electronic components).
• Weather Stopper models provide a raintight seal to the NEMA 3R standard (IPX4 equivalency).

Closed cell IV2 with pressure-sensitive adhesive. Replace after 5 years.

Horn Current Draw

Relay (RC Models)

Temperature Range: -40° to 120°F (-40° to 49°C). For temperatures below -4°F (-20°C), a remote power source is recommended.

Important Installation Notes

• When used outdoors, the manual pull station must also be rated for outdoor use.
• The relay contacts on RC models: UL Listing does not permit connection to a fire alarm or life safety function.
• Per UL Listing, models powered from an external power source cannot be supplied from the fire alarm panel.
• When properly installed, the cover's operation will not interfere with your life safety system.
• A backplate and gaskets must be used to achieve NEMA 3R integrity.
• Horn must be tested annually; battery replacement recommended annually depending on use and battery expiration date.
• For uneven mounting surfaces, use the STI-1280 backplate for proper sealing (may be drilled for wire access/screw holes as needed).

Installation Steps

1. With the power switch in the "OFF" position, use the frame or optional STI-1280 backplate (recommended with all Weather Stopper® models) as a template to mark mounting holes on the wall, considering pull-station placement. If drilling into masonry/drywall, use the provided anchors and drill (4) ¼" (6.3mm) holes 1¼" deep. If drilling into wood, drill (4) 5/32" (3.9mm) holes 1¼" deep — do not use anchors in wood.
2. If using the STI-1280 backplate, follow the exploded-view guidance for your flush or surface mount configuration. Note: drilling a hole in the backplate compromises NEMA 3R integrity; the Weather Stopper STI-1250 is designed to meet IP54 instead. Factory voltage settings: battery-powered units = 9 volt; remote power "RC" units = 24 volt (use the 24V setting for 12VDC input power too). Use only a 9-volt battery on standard internally-powered models.
3. Align the frame and secure with screws through the frame holes into anchors (and through spacer/gaskets/backplate if used). STI-1200 users can skip to step 8. When using the STI-3100 spacer, install the conduit knockout, ventilation, and gaskets before tightening to the wall. When using conduit gasket STI-3004, place it around the conduit before installing the spacer. A bead of silicone may be applied to the conduit fitting and between the STI-1280 backplate and wall for added protection.
4. Make any external connections for remote power or relay options (RC models use RED = 12–24VDC +, BLACK = –, GREEN = Normally Open, BLUE = Common, WHITE = Normally Closed).
5. For models using the 2" spacer, insert the cable end stop into the pocket inside the frame, hold the frame against the wall, and pull the cable to lock into the slot. Repeat for the second cable.
6. Slide the power switch on the back of the horn housing to "ON." When power is connected the horn should sound (if using an external power source, the horn won't sound until power is turned on at the source).
7. Push the switch in to silence the horn while tightening the switch locking screw — this prevents the slide switch from being shut off during unauthorized use. (Surface-mount versions ship with the screw already in locked position.)
8. Close the cover on the frame by aligning the cover tabs with the frame slots and pushing the bottom on tightly; the horn should silence. To test: lift the cover (horn should sound), then return the cover to the frame (horn should silence). The unit is now armed for operation.

Gasket Installation

Gaskets are necessary for a proper seal in weatherproof applications. Weather Stopper models ship with all necessary gaskets. For flush-mount weather applications, install an STI-3002 gasket between the frame/spacer and wall or backplate, and an STI-3004 gasket around all entering conduit. For surface-mount applications, the conduit insert with holes fits the bottom knockout of the conduit spacer to help reduce condensation buildup (though it may allow some dust entry). STI recommends replacing gaskets every five years. UL requires the pull station itself to be UL Listed for outdoor installations.

Battery Replacement Instructions

1. Remove the cover from the frame (no need to remove the cables from the frame).
2. Use a 3/32" Allen wrench to loosen the button-head screw next to the switch enough to slide the switch to "off."
3. Holding the horn housing and cover in one hand, remove the button-head screw on top of the cover with the same Allen wrench.
4. Set the clear cover aside and remove the horn housing cover.
5. Replace the battery with a 9 Volt battery only, keeping wires clear of the slide switch and micro-switch.
6. Reassemble, making sure the horn housing fits into the tabs on the horn housing cover and the assembly seats evenly inside the clear cover.
7. Replace the button-head screw through the top of the clear cover into the top of the horn.
8. Slide the switch to "on" — the horn should sound.
9. Push the switch in to silence the horn while tightening the locking screw.
10. Replace the cover onto the frame and test: removing the cover should sound the horn, and replacing it should silence it. If the unit doesn't operate correctly, contact Safety Technology International, Inc.

Polycarbonate Cleaning Instructions

Rinse with water to remove abrasive dust and dirt. Wash with soap or mild detergent using a soft cloth, rinse again, then dry with a soft cloth or chamois. Exercise caution using water inside the enclosure — make sure the unit is completely dry inside before reassembling. To remove grease or wet paint from the exterior, rub gently with a cloth wetted with Naphtha, then wash and rinse. Do not use razor blades.
