HAI UPB Powerline Phase Coupler (39A00-1) — Installation Instructions

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation and operating instructions for the HAI UPB™ Powerline Phase Coupler, model 39A00-1, which couples the UPB™ powerline signal from one electrical phase to another (e.g. Line 1 to Line 2) to ensure adequate signal strength for whole-home UPB™ lighting/control systems in larger homes.

    Overview

The UPB™ protocol is robust and less susceptible to powerline noise than older X10-style protocols, but HAI still recommends installing a Powerline Phase Coupler in every UPB™ installation to guarantee the powerline signal reaches devices on both electrical phases of a split-phase (residential) service panel.

    Important Notes Before Installation

    • Must be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code and all local codes/regulations.
    • Installation must only be performed by a qualified electrician.
    • Indoor use only.
    • Disconnect all power at the main breaker panel before beginning work.
    • Connect only copper or copper-clad wire to this device.
    • Retain the instructions for future reference.

    Installation Steps

    1. Turn off power at the main breaker panel.
    2. Remove ¾" of insulation from each of the black wires on the Phase Coupler.
    3. Install a 15A circuit breaker on Line 1 (phase 1) in the breaker panel and connect it to one black wire on the Phase Coupler, using copper wire rated at a minimum of 15A. Secure with the supplied wire connectors.
    4. Install a 15A circuit breaker on Line 2 (phase 2) and connect it to the other black wire on the Phase Coupler, again using minimum 15A-rated copper wire and supplied connectors.
    5. Verify all wire connectors are firmly attached with no exposed copper.
    6. Install the Phase Coupler into a standard single-gang electrical wall box with the LED at the top, and screw it in place.
    7. Restore power at the main breaker panel before installing the faceplate.
    8. After confirming the red power LED is illuminated, install a blank faceplate onto the wall box.

The unit is wired between two 15A breakers on opposite phases (Line 1 and Line 2) in the breaker panel, with the Phase Coupler itself mounted in a single-gang wall box near the panel, per the wiring diagrams in the original manual.
