Simply Automated US2-40 — UPB Universal Dimming Transceiver Base Instructions

Overview

The Simply Automated SimplyBrilliant™ UPB Universal Dimming Transceiver Base, Model US2-40, provides direct load control and/or remote control of permanently installed lighting fixtures, lamps, and other electrical devices over a UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) network. It supports incandescent lighting, magnetic low-voltage lighting, and halogen lighting, and can control loads up to 900W depending on box configuration. Actuator faceplates (model series ZS1X/ZS2X, sold separately) are fully interchangeable on the US2-40 base.

Important Safety Instructions

• Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician.
• Keep away from water — disconnect immediately if the product contacts water or other liquid.
• Never use a product that has been dropped or damaged; do not use outdoors.
• Do not connect multiple lamps that, combined, exceed the maximum load rating (de-rated for multi-gang boxes — see table below).
• Do not install in areas that can exceed 120°F (e.g., an attic).
• Do not use this product to control a receptacle — this can cause overheating and damage to other equipment.
• Do not wire hot / with power connected. Improper installation voids the warranty and may cause injury or permanent damage.
• This dimmer cannot be used with fluorescent, electronic low-voltage, or metal halide lighting unless specifically allowed by the lighting manufacturer — reconfigure for ON/OFF operation (dimming disabled) for these load types, or for motor-operated appliances, transformer-supplied appliances, or fans.

Load De-Rating Table

Installation Steps

1. Locate the existing wall switch for the lighting to be controlled. Confirm the lamp rating (or combined rating of all connected lamps) doesn't exceed the de-rating table above.
2. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker.
3. Remove the existing wall switch hardware and disconnect the wires.
4. Remove the yellow “INSTALL WITH CARE” label on the US2-40 if present.
5. Using a wire nut, connect all white (Neutral) wires together.
6. Using a wire nut, connect the brown (load output) wire of the US2-40 to the black wire of the device to be controlled.
7. For 3-way (or more) installations: use a wire nut to connect the brown/white “REMOTE 1” or red/white “REMOTE 2” wire to a second 3-way switch traveler, per the wiring diagrams in the full manual.
8. Using a wire nut, connect the black (Line) wire of the US2-40 to the black (Line) power wire.
9. Mount the switch inside the J-box using captive screws — do not over-tighten.
10. Reconnect power at the circuit breaker.

Configuration

Configuration requires UPB setup/configuration software (UPStart) and a model UMC Computer Interface Module. First-time users should download and follow the Quick Start Guide and use the Installation Wizard in UPStart.

The US2-40 default settings are preconfigured for a ZS24 (quad rocker) faceplate, with the load operating locally on any faceplate. Any rocker or button can be reconfigured to control the local load using UPStart. Local response time is adjustable (300, 450, 600, or the default 750 mSec).

Setup Mode: Tap any rocker/pushbutton exactly 5 times consecutively to enter SETUP mode (LED blinks green continuously). The module stays in SETUP mode for 5 minutes, or exits automatically once added to the network. To exit manually, tap any rocker/pushbutton twice.

Power Disconnection

To disconnect power to the connected lamp fixture: depress the top of the rocker switch, then pull the underside clear plastic indicator tab out about 0.2″ with your fingernail until it stays in place — the LED extinguishes. To reconnect power, push the tab back into its normal position.

Overload Protection

The US2-40 contains a thermal sensor that automatically turns off the connected load if the switch becomes too hot — this can happen when the load exceeds the switch's power rating, when dimming an incompatible load, or in an environment exceeding 120°F. If the load repeatedly cycles ON/OFF without command, reduce the load.

Installing / Changing Faceplates

1. Align the light pipe (LED) recess on the faceplate assembly with the switch, and the four prongs with the four slots on the switch body.
2. Squeeze the prongs on both sides and press the faceplate into the switch body until all four prongs latch.
3. Exercise each rocker/button several times to confirm proper seating; re-seat if it doesn't operate correctly.

To change faceplate labeling, remove the clear plastic label cover, flip the label to hide switch numbers, or order a custom label kit (Model ZLK-01, specify color).

Troubleshooting

Factory Default Settings

To restore defaults, place the US2 in SETUP mode and tap any actuator exactly 10 times (LED blinks blue continuously); tap twice more to exit.

Manual Scene Creation (No Software Required)

1. Create a scene: set all scene devices to desired levels, place them in SETUP mode, then tap the scene actuator on the US2 exactly 7 times.
2. Add a device to a scene: activate the scene, set the device's light level, place it in SETUP mode, then tap the scene actuator exactly 7 times.
3. Remove a device from a scene: place the device in SETUP mode, then tap the scene actuator exactly 8 times.
4. Change light levels on an existing scene: set the levels as desired, then tap the scene actuator exactly 7 times.
