    Complete user guide for the Simply Automated UPB Appliance Module, model UMA-E-W — a plug-in module that turns 120VAC appliances and fluorescent lamps ON/OFF based on digital commands sent over existing home power wiring from a remote UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) controller.

    Function

    The UMA-E-W receives digital commands over the power wiring — no additional wiring is required and no radio frequency signals are used for communication. UPB controllers and modules can be freely located anywhere in the home.

    Important Safety Instructions

    • Read and follow all safety instructions.
    • Keep away from water — unplug immediately if the product contacts water or other liquid.
    • Never use products that have been dropped or damaged. Do not use outdoors, or for other than its intended use.
    • Do not connect multiple lamps or appliances that combined exceed the maximum load rating.
    • Install out of reach of small children to avoid risk of fire, burns, injury, or electric shock.
    • Do not cover the product with any material when in use.
    • This product uses polarized plugs and sockets (one blade wider than the other) — they fit only one way. If they don't fit, consult a technician; do not alter plugs. Do not use with an extension cord unless plugs can be fully inserted.

    Installation

    Designed for indoor use with devices that plug into a power outlet.

    1. Locate the appliance or fluorescent lamp to be controlled and unplug it from the wall outlet. Plug the UMA-E-W module into the wall outlet.
    2. Plug the appliance or fluorescent lamp into the socket on the bottom of the module. The appliance rating must not exceed 12 amps.
    3. Turn the appliance's own power switch ON.

    Configuration

    1. Configuration requires UPStart UPB setup/configuration software and a model UMC Computer Interface Module. Download the latest UPStart version from the Simply Automated website — first-time users should follow the Quick Start Guide and use the Installation Wizard in UPStart.
    2. To place the module in SETUP mode, press the Program Switch five times rapidly using a non-metallic toothpick. The indicator continuously blinks GREEN in SETUP mode. To exit, press the Program Switch once, or wait five minutes.

    CAUTION: Do not insert metal objects into the module, especially the program switch, while it is connected to power.

    Operation

    The module operates according to commands sent by the UPB controller. The indicator glows RED when the controlled outlet is OFF and GREEN when it is ON.

    Manual override: Press and hold the Program Switch for at least 3 seconds to enable manual override — the indicator blinks RED-GREEN continuously. While in override, press the Program Switch to turn the appliance ON/OFF locally. Press and hold the Program Switch again for at least 3 seconds to exit manual override.

    UPB Factory Default Settings

    To restore defaults: place the UMA-E-W in SETUP mode, press the Program Switch ten times, then press it twice again to exit.
