  • Simply Automated UMA Series Appliance (Relay) Modules — Specifications

    September 08, 2026 3 min read

Product specifications for the Simply Automated UMA series plug-in appliance (relay) modules — UMA-20-W heavy duty and UMA-E-W standard models — for remote UPB control of appliances, motors, and non-dimmable lighting.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Product specifications for the Simply Automated UMA series Appliance (Relay) Modules — remotely controlled plug-in modules for appliances, fan/pump motors, and non-dimmable lighting, using UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) technology over existing home wiring.

    Overview

UMA modules plug into a standard 120VAC outlet, and the appliance or light to be controlled plugs into the bottom of the module. They receive UPB lighting-scene commands over existing AC power lines — no new or special wiring required. The connected appliance can be controlled manually via a UPB switch or multi-button controller, or automatically via a scheduler (model UCS-01), an I/O module (model UMI), or any PC/security/home-automation controller with a UPB serial driver.

UMA modules deliver on/off control for appliances, fan/pump motors, and fluorescent lights (for incandescent lamp dimming, see model UML instead).

    Advantages

    • Simple plug-in installation, no new wires — receives UPB scene commands over existing AC power lines
    • Controlled by UPB switches, multi-button controllers, and PC/security/home automation controllers
    • UPB technology delivers exceptional reliability and noise immunity, lowest installed cost vs. hardwired or RF solutions, and no interference between adjacent homes
    • Easily configured/reconfigured with UPStart (PC) software — makes moving/changing the module easy

    Manual Scene-Link Modification

Unique to Simply Automated devices — without UPStart software, you can manually change existing scenes using rocker/button taps:

    • Add or delete devices from a scene with 7 or 8 taps
    • Adjust a linked device's light level and save it with 7 taps

    Model Variants

UMA-20-W (Heavy Duty / Timer Model)

    • 15 Amp on/off relay with "auto-off" timer function
    • 3-conductor connection includes safety ground
    • Provides both a controlled outlet and an always-on convenience outlet
    • Switch-sense trigger — turns on the module when the appliance's own switch is toggled twice
    • Timer function for automatic timed-off control (energy savings) — preset options: 1, 5, or 30 seconds; 1, 2, 4, 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 minutes; 1, 2, 3, or 4 hours. Timer can be disabled for standard on/off operation. Any UPB switch (e.g. US2-40) can select a timer duration via scene-link commands.

    UMA-E-W (Standard Model)

    • 12 Amp on/off relay
    • 2-conductor controlled outlet connection

    Applications

Appliance (relay) modules are a convenient way to add controlled fans, fluorescent lights, fan/pump motors, or outdoor lighting to a room, garage, or yard. They can be moved between outlets to meet changing load needs (e.g. seasonal Christmas lighting). If mobility isn't needed, consider the controlled duplex receptacle instead (model URD).

    • Outdoor lighting/water feature control: Combine with a scheduler (model UCS) or UPB switch. The scheduler's celestial clock knows sunrise/sunset and auto-compensates for daylight savings and leap years — e.g., outdoor lighting on after dusk, a water feature on during waking hours. Vacation mode can also control indoor UPB lighting while away.
    • Garage workshop lighting: Replace a garage light switch with a US2-40 + ZS25O faceplate, add an appliance module to an outlet, and connect multiple fluorescent lights — the single rocker controls the existing light load while the multiple buttons control other lights/workbench appliances.
    • Sensor-triggered scenes: A door, gate, or garage-door sensor connected to an I/O module (model UMI) can trigger lighting scenes for appliance modules — illuminating the garage, yard, and entrance whenever the door opens.
