  • Simply Automated Input/Output Module (UMI) — Installation & Wiring Manual

    September 08, 2026 4 min read

Complete installation and wiring manual for the Simply Automated Input/Output Module, model UMI — low-voltage sensor inputs (contact closure, doorbell, telephone, audio sense) triggering UPB scene-links, and UPB-controlled outputs.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Complete installation and wiring manual for the Simply Automated Input/Output Module, model UMI (including UMI-32 and UMI-32SP) — a UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) accessory that triggers scene-links from low-voltage inputs (contact closures, doorbell, telephone ring, audio sense, etc.) and activates low-voltage outputs from UPB commands.

    Function

The UMI is used to control UPB devices via scene-links triggered by low-voltage inputs (e.g., a contact closure, voltage, current, doorbell, or telephone ring), and to activate low-voltage outputs based on UPB scene-links or commands. The module accepts up to 3 inputs and provides 2 outputs.

CAUTION: Do not connect voltages higher than 30Vrms/DC to the input/output terminals (other than telephone input #3) — risk of shock hazard.

    Important Safety Instructions

    • Read and follow all safety instructions.
    • Keep away from water — unplug immediately if the product contacts water or other liquid.
    • Never use products that have been dropped or damaged. Do not use outdoors, or for other than its intended use.
    • Do not connect multiple devices that combined exceed the maximum load ratings.
    • Install out of reach of small children to avoid risk of fire, burns, injury, or electric shock.
    • Do not cover the product with any material when in use.
    • This product uses polarized plugs and sockets (one blade wider than the other) — they fit only one way. Consult a technician if they don't fit; do not alter plugs; do not use with an extension cord unless plugs fully insert.

    Installation

Designed for indoor use with low-voltage sensors and actuators.

    1. Locate a wall outlet near the wiring to be connected.
    2. Connect wires from the device(s) to be monitored or controlled to the terminal block on the bottom of the module (see Wiring Diagrams below). Use a small tool (ball-point pen) to depress the orange release lever above each wire hole to insert or remove wires.
    3. Plug the UMI module into the wall outlet.
    4. If desired, another device can be plugged into the always-powered socket on the front of the module.

    Configuration

    1. The UMI-32SP comes preconfigured for use with the SimplySmart™ Series of Pre-Configured Kits and Accessories. Reconfiguring the UMI-32SP or UMI-32 requires UPStart UPB setup/configuration software and a model UMC Computer Interface Module.
    2. To place the UMI in SETUP mode, press the Program Switch five times rapidly using a non-metallic tool (ink pen or toothpick). The indicator blinks continuously GREEN in SETUP mode. To exit, press the Program Switch once or wait five minutes.
    3. Use UPStart to assign scene-links that control other UPB devices.

CAUTION: Do not insert metal objects into the module, especially the program switch, while it is connected to power.

    Operation

Inputs can be set to activate or deactivate other UPB devices/scenes based on the presence, absence, or both of the input signal. Using UPStart, an input can be configured as normally open (N.O.), normally closed (N.C.), or customized. "Open" means absence of input signal / an open contact; "Closed" means presence of input signal above threshold / a closed contact. The corresponding INPUT indicator glows GREEN when the input is applied.

Outputs operate according to commands sent by a controller or UPB scene-link — the corresponding OUTPUT indicator glows GREEN when ON. The output relay can be configured to close, open, or provide momentary closure on receiving a UPB scene-link.

Important: Outputs can only be activated via UPB commands, not via inputs on the same module — the UMI cannot "hear" itself when transmitting UPB, so it cannot use its own input to directly drive its own output.

    UPB Factory Default Settings (UMI-32)

To restore defaults: place the UMI in SETUP mode, press the Program Switch ten times (indicator flashes RED), then press twice to exit.

    Wiring Reference

The UMI module accepts up to 3 inputs and 2 outputs. Each input type has a different wiring configuration:

    • Input #1 — can accept a phone line (for ring detect) or a low-voltage input.
    • Input #2 — can accept a dry contact closure or a low-voltage input.
    • Input #3 — can accept a current input (wired in series with a doorbell switch), a dry contact closure, a low-voltage input, or a line audio input (two trigger threshold options).

Low-Voltage SSR (Solid State Relay) Outputs

    • Output #1 — connect wires in series with a low-voltage power source and the load to terminals 1 and 2. Rating: 60VDC/42VAC @ 400mA max.
    • Output #2 — connect wires in series with a low-voltage power source and the load to terminals 3 and 4. Rating: 60VDC/42VAC @ 400mA max.

The internal relay is a dry contact — connect to a device that accepts a contact input. If a voltage signal is required, wire a low-voltage source in series (source polarity depends on the load). Note: a power source may not be required depending on the load — verify proper source connection.

    Telephone Ring Detect Input

    Input #1 — Tip and Ring connect to terminals 5 and 6. Rating: 100VAC / 140VDC max.

    Contact Closure Inputs

    Input #2 — connect wires to terminals 9 and 10. Rating: 30Vrms/DC.

    Input #3 — connect wires to terminals 15 and 16. Rating: 30Vrms/DC.

Voltage Sense (triggers on a 4-5VAC/DC threshold)

    Input #1 — connect wires to terminals 6 and 7. Rating: 30Vrms/DC.

    Input #2 — connect wires to terminals 8 and 9. Rating: 30Vrms/DC.

    Input #3 — connect wires to terminals 14 and 15. Rating: 30Vrms/DC.

Doorbell Detect (current sense, triggers around 200mA threshold, 900mA max)

Input #3 — wire in series (preferably at the transformer): connect the doorbell switch wire to terminal 14, and connect the wire from terminal 13 to the transformer.

    Audio Sense (-30dBV or -10dBV)

Input #3 — from a line audio source, connect the center conductor to terminal 11 for -30dBV or terminal 12 for -10dBV. Connect the shield to terminal 13.
