Installation and operation manual for the Simply Automated UMC Computer Interface Module for UPB lighting networks.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation and operation manual for the Simply Automated UMC Computer Interface Module — bridges a PC or home automation controller to a UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) lighting network over existing AC power wiring.

    Function

The UMC exchanges digital commands between a computer/controller and UPB devices via the home's AC power wiring. Two models are available:

    • UMC-DB9: Serial RS-232 interface with DB9 connector/cable, for both configuration and control of UPB lighting.
    • UMC-USB: USB interface for configuration only — not recommended for home automation controller interfacing (alarm systems, PC, or whole-home controllers).

UPB devices can be located anywhere in the home — no additional wiring or RF signals required.

    Important Safety Instructions

    • Read and follow all safety instructions; save them for future reference.
    • Keep away from water — unplug immediately if the product contacts water or other liquid.
    • Never use a product that has been dropped or damaged; not for outdoor use.
    • Install out of reach of small children to avoid fire, burns, injury, or electric shock.
    • Do not cover the product with cloth, paper, or other material while in use.
    • Uses polarized plugs/sockets as a shock-reduction feature — do not alter or force-fit plugs; do not use an extension cord unless the plug fully inserts.

    Installation

    1. The first time the UMC is used, turn on the computer without the UMC connected.
    2. Plug the UMC into a 120V outlet near the computer/server.
    3. Connect the supplied interface cable from the socket on the bottom of the module to the appropriate data port on the computer/controller.
    4. Run UPStart (or other UPB interface software) and establish communication with the CIM and UPB network.
    5. Once communication is established, the computer can be turned on/off with the UMC still physically connected.
    6. Any electrical device can optionally be plugged into the front socket of the UMC-DB9, which stays powered at all times.

    Operation

The indicator glows AMBER when powered and flashes RED during messaging. Two operating modes are supported:

    • MESSAGE mode — required by most home automation controllers.
    • PULSE mode — automatically set by UPStart software.

The last-used mode persists through a power interruption. To restore MESSAGE mode:

    1. Enter SETUP mode by pressing the Program Switch (above the indicator) 5 times rapidly with a non-metallic toothpick — indicator blinks RED continuously.
    2. Press the Program Switch 10 times to reset to MESSAGE mode — indicator blinks GREEN continuously.
    3. Press the Program Switch twice to exit SETUP mode.

Caution: Do not insert metal objects into the module — especially the Program Switch — while it's connected to power.
