Simply Automated Fixture Relay Module (UFR) — Installation & Operation Manual

Installation and operation manual for the Simply Automated Fixture Relay Module, model UFR — a UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) load-control module that turns 120VAC appliances or lighting ON and OFF (including timed OFF) based on digital commands received over existing power wiring.

Function

The Fixture Relay Module (UFR) turns 120VAC appliances or lighting ON and OFF (and timed OFF) based on digital commands received over the power wiring from a remote UPB controller. UPB controllers and modules can be freely located anywhere in the home — no additional wiring is required and no radio frequency signals are used for communication.

Important Safety Instructions

7. Do not connect multiple lamps or appliances that, combined, exceed the maximum load rating of the product.
8. To avoid risk of fire, burns, personal injury, and electric shock, install this product out of reach of small children.
9. Do not cover the product with any flammable material when in use.
10. Save these instructions.

Installation

The Fixture Relay Module is designed for indoor use with devices permanently wired into the home electrical system. Note: the controlled device's power rating must not exceed 12 amps.

1. Locate the device to be controlled.
2. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker.
3. Remove any existing ceiling or wall fixture hardware for the device; disconnect the black wire that supplies power to the device.
4. Using a wire nut, connect the black (Line) wire of the fixture module to the black (Line) power wire.
5. If a remote wall switch is not used, cap off the unused brown/white wire at the fixture module to prevent shorting.
6. Using a large wire nut, connect the white (Neutral) wire of the fixture module to the white (Neutral) power wire and the white wire from the lighting fixture. If a remote USR wall switch is used, this connection can also supply a neutral to the USR switch.
7. Refer to the CONFIGURATION and OPERATION sections before placing the fixture module in its final location — you may need access to the Program Switch to add the module to the UPB network and test its operation. Temporarily restore power to perform these functions, then disconnect power again when finished. (If a USR Remote Switch is part of the installation, simply tap the USR 5 times to put the module into Program Mode.)
8. Once proper operation is established, fit the module into the outlet box or otherwise secure it using screws or wire ties. Reinstall fixture hardware as needed.

Note: The UFR has two neutral wires for convenience — cap the second neutral wire if unused. Cap unused brown/white and/or red/white wires to prevent shock or shorting. When using an optional USR Dedicated Remote Switch, connect the brown wire (black on some models) as shown in the wiring diagrams to enable operation of the LED indicator — this wire is not required for switch operation and can be omitted if a third wire is not available (cap it if not used).

Configuration

1. Configuration requires UPB setup/configuration software called UPStart, and a model UMC Computer Interface Module. Before using UPStart, download the latest version from the Simply Automated website. First-time users should also download and follow the Quick Start Guide, and use the Installation Wizard available in UPStart to save time.
2. When configuring a UPB system, it may be necessary to place the UFR in SETUP mode. Press the Program Switch (or the USR rocker) five times rapidly using a non-metallic toothpick. The indicator will continuously blink GREEN when in SETUP mode. To exit SETUP mode, press the Program Switch once, or wait five minutes.

Caution: Do not insert metal objects into the module — especially into the Program Switch — while it is connected to power.

Operation

The Fixture Relay Module operates according to commands sent by a controller. The indicator on the module glows RED when the controlled device is OFF and GREEN when the device is ON.

A Timer function is available on the UFR: controller commands can turn ON the UFR and load a preset timer period, after which the UFR automatically turns OFF. Available preset times: 1 Sec., 5 Sec., 30 Sec., 1 Min., 2 Min., 4 Min., 10 Min., 20 Min., 30 Min., 40 Min., 50 Min., 1 Hr., 2 Hrs., 3 Hrs., and 4 Hrs.

When the UFR is controlled by a remote switch (model USR), local response time adjustments are available (300, 450, 600, and the default 750 mSec), configured with UPStart software. Local response time is the time from rocker press to load response.

UPB Factory Default Settings

To restore the following default settings, place the UFR in SETUP mode and press the Program Switch ten times, then press the switch twice more to exit this mode.

Installation Configurations

The UFR (and its dimmer counterpart, the UFD) is wired to line and neutral, and controlled via link(s) transmitted from a US1, US2, or control system (hardwired or software) — with an optional USR Dedicated Remote Switch for local control.
