Sanus VLT5 Tilt Wall Display Mount — Instruction Manual

Instruction manual for the Sanus VLT5 tilt wall display mount (model VLT5B1), a full-featured tilting TV wall mount with a built-in magnetic stud finder, cable management, and adjustable level/tilt/lateral-shift controls.

Before You Begin

• Weight limit: compatible only with TVs weighing 125 lb (56.7 kg) or less, including accessories. Heavier TVs require a different Sanus mount (check MountFinder.Sanus.com).
• Wall types: compatible with drywall over wood studs, or solid concrete/concrete block. Drywall over steel studs requires the separate SSMK1 steel stud mounting kit — do not install into drywall alone without studs or the proper kit.
• The wall must be capable of supporting five times the combined weight of the TV and mount.
• Tools needed: screwdriver, tape measure, 7/32 in. (5.5 mm) wood drill bit, 3/8 in. (10 mm) concrete drill bit, electric drill, hammer, and a 1/2 in. (13 mm) socket wrench.

Safety warning: This product contains a magnet in the included stud finder. If you have an implanted medical device such as a pacemaker or defibrillator (ICD), magnetic fields may affect its operation — keep at least 13 cm (5 in.) between the device and the magnet, and consult your physician before use.

Using the Magnetic Stud Finder

The included Sanus Magnetic Stud Finder locates studs behind drywall in two steps: (1) hold it vertically and slide it up and down across the wall — the magnet is attracted to the screws holding the drywall to the stud; mark the wall directly below the magnet when it lands on a screw, and verify by finding a second or third screw in the same stud. (2) Pull the finder apart to expose the probing pin, then insert it into the wall every 1/8 inch starting about 1/2 inch from your pencil mark until you locate both edges and the center of the stud.

Step 1 — Attach Bracket to TV

Attach the left and right TV brackets to the back of the TV using the appropriate hardware for your TV's mounting hole pattern, per the parts and hardware included with the kit.

Step 2 — Mount the Wall Plate

Option A: Wood Stud Wall

• Drywall covering the wall must not exceed 5/8 in. (16 mm); minimum stud size is a common 2x4 in. (nominal 1½ x 3½ in.); minimum horizontal spacing between fasteners is 16 in. (406 mm). Stud spacing must be verified — not all walls use standard 16 in. or 24 in. spacing.
• Locate stud centers with the magnetic stud finder, mark them, and tape the wall plate template in place over the stud center lines (use HeightFinder at sanus.com to determine mounting height). Drill four pilot holes with a 7/32 in. bit to a depth of 3 in. (75 mm) — be sure to center them on the studs.
• Partially install the top two lag bolts (leaving ~1/2 in. gap from the wall), remove the template, slide open the wall plate's covers, and hang the wall plate on the top lag bolts.
• Install the bottom two lag bolts and firmly tighten all four (hold the plate in place while tightening the first bolt so it doesn't shift). All four lag bolts must be tight to prevent movement. Slide the covers closed when done.

Option B: Solid Concrete or Concrete Block Wall

• Mount the wall plate directly onto the concrete surface. Minimum solid concrete thickness is 8 in. (203 mm); minimum concrete block size is 8x8x16 in.; minimum horizontal fastener spacing is 24 in. (610 mm).
• Position and level the template, mark hole locations, then drill four pilot holes with a 3/8 in. bit to a depth of 3 in. — never drill into the mortar between blocks.
• Remove the template, insert four anchors flush with the concrete surface, partially install the top two lag bolts, then hang and secure the wall plate the same way as the wood-stud option.

Step 3 — Attach TV to Wall Plate

This step is heavy — you may need assistance. Hook the TV brackets onto the wall plate (they can slide along the plate for optimal positioning), rest the TV against the wall, and press the bottom of the TV into the wall plate until the latches lock it in place. Always confirm the brackets are fully locked before letting go.

Cable Management

Tilt the TV up or down to access the back for cable connections, then adjust the TV as desired once cables are attached.

Adjustments

• Level: turn the level adjustment screw on top of either TV bracket to raise or lower that side of the TV.
• Tilt: the TV should move easily and hold position; adjust the tilt tension knob if the TV naturally drifts up or down on its own, or tighten it fully if you don't need to adjust tilt for different viewing angles.
• Lateral shift: slide the TV left or right along the wall plate to reposition it.

Removing the TV

This step is heavy — you may need assistance. Disconnect all cables, then pull down and hold both release cords while gently pulling the bottom of the TV away from the wall to unlock it from the wall plate (always hold the release cords down while pulling, to avoid breaking the locking latch). Lift the TV up and off the wall plate. To rehang, repeat Step 3.

Troubleshooting

For TVs that come with their own inset spacers or wall-mount adapter rings, and where your installation requires a flat-back/low-profile fit, use the TV's own supplied spacers rather than the Sanus spacers included in the kit.
