    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation guide for the Russound SMZ8 — an 8-source / 8-zone controller amplifier with a built-in hi-res audio streamer, scalable up to 48 zones. Professional installation by a Russound Certified Installer is required.

    Important: Internet Connection Required

The SMZ8 ships in a locked state and cannot be operated until a Russound Certified Installer enters valid credentials via Web Config or the Russound App — this requires a working internet connection. If installing at a site without internet access, configure the unit at your shop first. Firmware updates are also delivered via Web Config; download firmware ahead of time if the job site has no internet.

Lockdown feature: Out of the box (or after a factory reset), the SMZ8 only operates in a locked state with no audio or control available. Unlocking requires valid Russound Certified Installer credentials entered through Web Config or the Russound App. If you're not a certified installer, contact your Russound Sales Representative.

Configuration password: When enabled, a fixed password of russound123 is required before changing configuration settings. This is separate from and cannot be modified independently of the installer credential system.

    Network Setup

Wired Ethernet: Connect directly to your router (not through a switch) for best results. Default is DHCP-enabled; Russound recommends a router-side IP reservation rather than a static IP.

    Wi-Fi setup options:

    1. Russound App: Settings gear → "Set Up New Device" → select the SMZ8 → choose your Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
    2. Wired connection + Web Config: Connect via Ethernet first, find the IP via the app's Admin Setup menu (hold the gear icon), then configure Wi-Fi through Web Config's Device Settings tab.
    3. iOS "Add an AirPlay speaker": Settings → Wi-Fi → Set up new AirPlay speaker → select "SMZ8-XXXX" → rename it → connect to your network. The front LED turns solid blue once connected.

    Web Config First-Time Setup

Access Web Config by browsing to the SMZ8's IP address (e.g. http://192.168.0.105) or its hostname (e.g. http://SMZ8-1234, printed on the rear label). First-time setup walks through:

    1. Device Name — defaults to the hostname; rename for streamer identification (e.g. "Bob's Streamer").
    2. Networking — choose Wired, Wireless, or Automatic (recommended: Automatic, which always prioritizes wired when available).
    3. Google Cast Permissions — accept terms of service to enable Google Cast.
    4. Date and Time — select country/region for correct scheduling and alarm functions.
    5. Firmware Update — check for and apply the latest firmware. Do not power down during an update; it includes a reboot and takes several minutes.

    Networking Best Practices

    • Use a dedicated 802.11n/ac-compatible router; avoid ISP modem/router combo units where possible, since ISPs can push resets/updates that disrupt connected devices.
    • Audio streaming is low-bandwidth (64-320 kbps) compared to video (1.5-25+ Mbps) — bandwidth is rarely the bottleneck.
    • Satellite internet is not recommended for streaming due to high latency — use local sources (NAS, flash drives, AirPlay) instead.
    • On the router, enable Multicast/IGMP support and UPnP; disable IGMP Proxy, IGMP Snooping, Multicast Filtering, or WMM Proxy if present.

    Troubleshooting

    • General: Power-cycle all networking equipment first. Check for firmware updates. Use a network scanner (e.g. FING) to check for IP conflicts.
    • DHCP Reset (if the SMZ8 can't be found after a router/Wi-Fi change): Press and hold the rear Factory Reset button for 3 seconds. This restores DHCP, resets network type to Automatic, and clears Wi-Fi config — but does NOT erase zone/source settings.
    • Full Factory Reset (erases ALL configuration and re-locks the unit — only do this if instructed by Russound Technical Support): Press and hold the rear Factory Reset button for 10 seconds. The unit will reboot and require Certified Installer credentials again to unlock.
