    Full installation manual for the GE Interlogix NetworX NX-584 Home Automation Module, an add-on module that fits into any NetworX security system enclosure and provides an RS-232 bi-directional interface for connecting a home automation host system.

    General Description

    The NetworX NX-584 is a low-cost add-on module that provides a standard RS-232 bi-directional DB-9 connector for connecting a home automation host system to a NetworX security panel via a simple three-wire connection. It supports several security levels to control how much system information is passed to the host, and can limit which commands the host is permitted to send — preventing unauthorized override of the security system status.

    The module supports ASCII or Binary communication protocol, with a selectable baud rate from 600 to 76,800 baud and hardware RTS/CTS handshaking. It can be configured to automatically send ("transition-based broadcasting") System, Partition, Zone, and Output information to the host without polling for a faster response than polling alone provides.

    Terminals & Wiring

    • POS – Connect to the KP POS terminal of the NX-8
    • COM – Connect to the KP COM terminal of the NX-8
    • DATA – Connect to the KP DATA terminal of the NX-8

    DB-9 host connector pinout: Cts* (Pin 8/7, jumper J7), Txd (Pin 2/3, jumper J8), Rts* (Pin 8/7, jumper J9), Rxd (Pin 2/3, jumper J10), Sig. Gnd. (Pin 5). Pins 1, 4, 6, 9 are unused. *Rts and Cts signals are not currently supported.

    Enrolling the Module

    NetworX control panels automatically find and store the presence of all keypads, zone expanders, wireless receivers, output modules, and other devices on the keypad bus. Enter Program Mode per the control panel Installation Manual; when Program Mode is exited, the panel automatically enrolls devices. Enrollment takes about 12 seconds, during which the "Service" LED illuminates and user codes are not accepted. If an enrolled module is later not detected, the Service LED illuminates.

    Programming the Module

    Using an LED keypad: Enter Program Mode with [*]-[8] and the "Go To Program" code (default [9]-[7]-[1]-[3]). Enter the NX-584 address [7][2]#. Enter the desired programming location followed by [#]. Use [POLICE] for next location, [FIRE] for previous location, [AUXILIARY] to stay on the same location. Enter data followed by [*] to advance through segments; press [#] to exit without changing data. Press [Exit] twice to leave Program Mode.

    Using an LCD keypad: Same programming steps, but the display prompts for required data and shows enabled features as numbers (disabled features shown as a hyphen).

    Numerical data (0-255) is entered directly via the keypad number keys; the LED pattern for zones 1-8 represents the binary value (Zone 1 LED=1, Zone 2=2, Zone 3=4, Zone 4=8, Zone 5=16, Zone 6=32, Zone 7=64, Zone 8=128).

    Feature selection data toggles up to 8 features on/off per segment — pressing a number key 1-8 toggles the corresponding feature's LED (illuminated = ON).

    Programming Locations Summary

    • Location 0 – Option Flags: Option 1 selects protocol mode (OFF = Binary, ON = ASCII). Options 2-8 reserved.
    • Location 1 – Baud Rate: 0=600, 1=1200, 2=2400, 3=4800, 4=9600, 5=19200, 6=38400, 7=76800 baud.
    • Location 2 – Enabling Transitions: Segment 1 enables Interface Configuration, Zone Status, Zones Snapshot, Partition Status, and Partitions Snapshot messages. Segment 2 enables System Status, X-10 Message Received, Log Event, and Keypad Message Received.
    • Location 3 – Command/Request Enables: Four segments controlling which commands the host automation system may issue — Interface Configuration, Zone Name/Status/Snapshot requests, System Status, Send X-10 Message, Log Event, Keypad Text Message, Terminal Mode, Program Data Request/Command, User Information (with/without PIN), Set User Code/Authorization, Store Communication Event, Set Clock/Calendar, Primary/Secondary Keypad Function, and Zone Bypass Toggle. Caution: understand the home automation system's capabilities before enabling these to avoid compromising security.
    • Location 4 – LCD Keypad Address: If the system's LCD keypad is Partition 1/Keypad 1, leave at factory default. Otherwise select the correct address from the Keypad/Partition chart (addresses 192-255 spanning 8 keypads × 8 partitions).
