Installation manual for the Russound MCA-66 — a 6-source, 6-zone multizone controller amplifier for whole-home audio distribution.

Important: Internet Connection Required for Installation

Two steps at installation require a working internet connection:

1. Unlock the unit with Russound Certified Installer credentials. The MCA-66 ships in a locked state — no audio or control via keypad, touchscreen, or the MyRussound App is available until valid credentials are entered through the Web Config configuration pages. If you are not a Russound Certified Installer, you cannot install and configure this product — contact your Russound sales rep to become certified. If installing at a job site without internet access, configure the unit at your shop first.
2. Firmware updates — performed via Web Config or a USB stick with the latest firmware. If no internet will be available on-site, download the latest firmware ahead of time to a laptop or USB drive.

When first powered on, connected MDK-C6 keypads, XTS touchscreens, and the MyRussound App display a message with the controller's IP address — browse to that address (http://+IP) to reach Web Config and unlock the unit.

Configuration Password: a separate default password, russound123, guards configuration changes (distinct from the Certified Installer password and cannot be modified).

Note: the internal AM/FM tuner from earlier C-Series controllers was replaced with a Bluetooth input extension. Russound's ST-1 or XSource can add tuner functionality if needed.

Web Config — Programming Software

Web Config lets an installer connect to the controller via its IP address from any smartphone, tablet, or laptop browser to configure the entire system. Features include: zone/source naming, network configuration (static IP), firmware updates, zone volume trim, All-On participation, source type/volume trim, digital/analog input switching, IR source programming, learned IR programming, macro setup, save/load configuration files, zone page enable/disable, keypad button configuration, power management configuration, and source/zone linking, plus backup and restore.

Advanced Configuration Options

• Zone/Source Names: predefined or custom names.
• Source Exclusion: limit which sources a zone can access.
• Party Mode Participation: whether a zone can join Party mode.
• Zone/Source Linked Groups: two groups of each type per controller, sharing source selection and party mode participation.
• All ON Participation: whether a zone responds to the All ON command.
• Page Participation / Page Volume: whether/how loud a zone responds to a page event.
• Power Management of Sources: per-source enable/disable — uses IR commands and audio signal sensing to power sources on/off. Source turns on when the first zone or a home theater trigger activates it, and off 5 minutes after the last zone turns off or input from the trigger stops.
• Sound Controls: per-zone Bass, Treble, Balance, Loudness, and Turn-On Volume.
• IR Keycode Learning: learn, save, and manage IR codes.
• Page Input on Source 6: assign Source 6 as a paging input.

Ethernet Connection & Factory Reset

The Ethernet connection handles configuration/programming and MyRussound App control. Default network setting is DHCP-enabled; a static IP can be configured later via Web Config (DHCP must be enabled on the LAN for initial setup). Find the controller's IP via your router's DHCP client table, an IP scanner app, or directly on an XTS touchscreen (press-and-hold Settings for 3+ seconds) or MDK-C6 keypad (Home > Settings > Installation > Network Settings).

Factory Reset button (rear panel): 3-second press-and-hold restores network settings to DHCP; 10-second press-and-hold performs a full factory reset (erases all configuration and re-locks the unit — requires Certified Installer credentials and internet access to unlock again).

Front & Rear Panel Overview

Front panel: Power button (red LED = power on), zone LED indicators visible behind a removable cover, IR programming window, and red IR LED (talk-back) behind the cover.

Rear panel connections: Common 12V Trigger (100mA output when any zone is active); Home Theater 12VDC Trigger (activates source power management when sharing sources with home theater); AC Voltage Switch (100-120VAC or 220-240VAC); Digital Inputs (3 SPDIF coax or 1 Toslink optical); Factory Reset Button; Controller ID rotary switch (for multi-controller setups); Serial (RS-232) port for 3rd-party device communication; Page 12VDC Trigger (accepts paging device 12V input); RNET Link (for linking multiple controllers/RNET sources); Keypad Ports (6x RJ-45 for zone keypads); Ethernet Port (programming/control); IR Outputs (6 routed, 1 common); USB Port (firmware updates); Bluetooth Extension Input (for BTC-1X); Audio Source Connections (signal-sensing stereo line-level inputs); Line Level Outputs (Fixed or Variable, zones 1 & 2); Speaker Outputs (8-ohm speakers per zone); AC 120/240V Input with fuse holder; Page Audio In (Source 6 configurable as right-channel paging input).

Installation Overview

Ventilation

Ensure the MCA-66's location doesn't block ventilation — keep vents above/to the sides clear, avoid excessive dust, and don't stack it above/below heat-generating equipment like amplifiers. Leave at least 2 inches of clearance to the sides with open airflow above; a single rack-space vent (~1.75") must stay clear above and below the unit.

Rack/Shelf Mounting

The controller can be rack-mounted or shelf-placed in an equipment rack, occupying two rack spaces with feet removed. Included rack-mount ears attach via five mounting holes on each side of the chassis. Up to six controllers can link together for up to 36 zones — multi-controller systems need RCA Y-splitter cables (or, for larger systems, audio distribution amplifiers) to split source audio.

Electrical Power

Operates at 100-120VAC ~60Hz or 220-240VAC ~50Hz, selected via the rear voltage switch with the appropriate detachable power cord. Russound recommends plugging the MCA-66 and source equipment into a dedicated 20-amp circuit; a power line conditioner can help with electrical noise. The power switch is on the front panel.

Important Wiring Cautions

• Disconnect the power cord before making any connections.
• Verify all connections and polarity are correct.
• Keep power cords away from signal cables to prevent induced-noise humming.
• Use reliable signal cables and patch cords; label all wires with room location at both ends.
• Avoid running speaker/signal wires close to house electrical wiring — keep at least 2 feet of separation if running parallel, and cross AC lines at a 90° angle if unavoidable.
• For multiple controllers, set each controller's ID rotary switch to a unique number before powering the connected controllers.
• Do not connect the controller's main power feed until all other connections have been made and verified. Live connection or removal of keypad or other wiring while powered can cause erratic operation or system damage. Incorrect wiring is the #1 cause of non-warranty product damage.

Wiring & Cable Runs

• Keypad wiring: route CAT-5e between keypad locations and the controller, terminated with RJ-45 connectors using the T568A standard. Use a UL/CSA-approved electrical box (double-gang, 32+ cu. in.) at keypad and controller locations. Max run length: 250 feet.
• Speaker wiring: standard 4-conductor speaker wire to each speaker location, 8-ohm load required per connection. 16-gauge stranded wire runs up to 125 feet; 14-gauge up to 250 feet.

Controller / Keypad Connections

Each Russound dedicated keypad (MDK-C6, SLK-1) connects to a keypad port near the top-left of the rear panel — six ports correspond to the six zones. When a keypad powers on, its zone becomes active and the matching zone LED lights on the controller's front panel. Connections use CAT-5e/RJ-45 with T568A wiring, max 250 feet between controller and keypad. For more keypads per zone, use an optional SA-ZX3 splitter with a Russound 1201A (12VDC, 1A) power supply — all keypads on an SA-ZX3 control the same zone.

Important: keypad ports are for Russound keypads ONLY — never plug ethernet/computer networking gear into them, as the 12VDC output will damage networking products.

XTS In-Wall Touchscreen: an IP-connected ethernet device — it must join the same ethernet network as the MCA controller, NOT a keypad port. Connect XTS units to the nearest network switch or router on the MCA's network.

Speaker Connections

All zones use 20W-per-channel stereo speaker-level outputs (8-ohm load required) via detachable, color-coded modular snap connectors — connect one zone's speaker set at a time, starting with Zone 1, to avoid mixing up identities. Strip 1–2 inches of jacket and 1/4 inch of insulation off each wire, twist strands together, lift the connector's locking lever, insert the wire matching channel/polarity, and snap the lever down. Check for stray strands before inserting the connector into its output.

Source Connections

Sources 1–6 have standard stereo audio inputs with signal sensing, and can be set globally available or restricted per zone. The optional Bluetooth source defaults to Source 1. Connect each source's Left/Right outputs via quality RCA cables to the corresponding controller inputs.

RNET Source Data: Link In/Out connects the MCA-66 to other RNET-enabled Russound source equipment via CAT-5e patch cable (RJ-45 both ends) — daisy-chainable to additional RNET sources. RNET Link also passes source IR signals, so cable length between links is capped at 18 inches to avoid IR cross-talk.

Bluetooth & Digital Inputs

Bluetooth (optional): supports the Russound BTC-1X module, which can sit up to 300 feet from the MCA-66 via CAT-5 (T568A terminated), letting users pair their phone/tablet near the BTC-1X while the controller stays remotely located. Bluetooth occupies Source 1; a Primary Zone can be set as the Bluetooth default in Web Config.

Digital Audio Inputs: hard-wired to Sources 3, 4, and 5 (coaxial and optical). Web Config lets you designate analog or digital for each of those sources — use only one connection type per source at a time.

Multiple Controller Installation

Up to 6 MCA-66 controllers can be linked via RNET Link In/Out using CAT-5e patch cables (RJ-45, T568A, max 18 inches to avoid IR cross-talk). Each controller must have a unique Controller ID (rotary switch, 6 positions) set BEFORE connecting via RNET and before the system setup procedure — one controller must be set to ID #1. Use RCA Y-splitter cables (or line-level distribution amps for larger systems) to split audio between controllers. Only Controller #1 needs an Ethernet/LAN connection. When using BTC-1X on Source 1, connect Source 1 OUT on Controller 1 to Source 1 IN on Controller 2, continuing the loop for additional controllers.

Zone 1 & 2 Amplification

Zones 1 and 2 have line-level outputs for additional amplification (e.g. outdoor zones or larger rooms), settable to Variable (default) or Fixed (always on). When set to Fixed, the zone's audio signal is always on.

Page Input Source

Paging Audio IN: Source 6 (right channel only) accepts line-level audio via RCA from a telephone system or similar peripheral. A page event interrupts audio on all enabled zones; paging can be disabled per-zone permanently (software) or temporarily (Do Not Disturb). Source 6 must be configured as a page source in Web Config — note that if Source 6 is used for paging, only 5 other source inputs remain available.

Page Trigger IN: a 12VDC trigger selects Source 6's audio (if configured as the page input) and routes it to any zone without paging disabled or in Do Not Disturb. Don't use the page trigger if a regular audio source is connected to Source 6.

Home Theater Triggers

Used to integrate with home theater systems on a 12V trigger, managing power to sources shared with the home theater. Connections use a two-conductor cable with 3.5mm mini-plugs (tip = positive, sleeve = negative).

• IN — "System Off" (all zones off 5+ min): applying 12VDC activates power-management ON to sources; removing it while zones stay off triggers OFF after a 5-minute wait.
• IN — "System On" (at least one zone on): if 12VDC is present but all zones turn off, power-management OFF is delayed until 5 minutes after the 12VDC is removed.
• OUT: a pass-through of the Home Theater trigger input, usable to activate other 12V trigger devices (e.g. a Russound D850 amplifier) whenever the input is active.

IR Connections

Routed IR Outputs: 6 emitter outputs supported by the MCA-66's IR engine, carried over the RNET Link cable to additional controllers too. Attach the 3.5mm plug end to the IR emitter port, then stick the emitter (adhesive back) over the source component's IR window. The source must be selected at the keypad sending the command for IR pass-through to work.

Common IR: supports IR pass-through from any IR source/zone, letting you control equipment without selecting it on the keypad. Connects via an IR emitter with a 3.5mm plug; an IR Connecting Block can expand it to multiple sources.

System Start-Up

1. Make all connections (sources, speakers, network, keypads) to the controller(s).
2. For multi-controller setups, set unique Controller IDs and link via RNET ports with CAT-5e cables no longer than 18 inches.
3. Plug in and power the sources and controllers.
4. The front-panel Power LED should light; zone LEDs cycle during boot then go off. Power LED indicates network status:
   • Boot: solid red
   • Startup: solid yellow after ~20 sec; zone LEDs blink 1 second apart
   • Network OK: solid green; Network Error: blinking yellow
   • Firmware Update: fast-blinking red
   • Firmware Update Error: normal-rate blinking red (error code = number of blinks)
5. Unlock the system with your Russound Certified Installer credentials.
6. Check for and apply firmware updates via Web Config.
7. Configure the system via Web Config.
8. Test each keypad — power on, cycle sources. Each RNET source must have a unique source ID matching its Web Config assignment.
9. Confirm each zone LED lights when its keypad is on.
10. Test all keypad functions.
11. Confirm IR pass-through, if applicable.
12. System is ready to use.

Troubleshooting

Factory Initialization

• 3-second hold on rear Reset button: resets network to DHCP.
• 10-second hold on rear Reset button: full factory reset — erases all configuration including software lockdown; requires Certified Installer credentials + internet to unlock again. If you saved a backup via Web Config's Backup/Restore, you can restore settings quickly after reset.

Technical Specifications

Limited Warranty

The MCA-66 is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for two years from the date of purchase — Russound will replace defective parts and correct workmanship defects at no charge for parts or labor, provided the unit was installed and used per written instructions and serviced only by Russound. The unit must be returned at the owner's expense with prior written permission. Not covered: accidental/shipping damage, abuse, misuse, negligence, improper installation/operation, power surges/lightning, normal wear, alterations, or removed/altered serial numbers. Products purchased from unauthorized dealers, retailers, or online sellers are not covered under this warranty.

Warning: To reduce risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose this appliance to rain or moisture. Do not remove the cover — no user-serviceable parts inside; refer servicing to qualified personnel.

• Read and retain all safety/operating instructions; heed all warnings and follow all instructions.
• Do not use near water (bathtub, sink, wet basement, pool); don't place liquid-filled objects on the unit or touch it with wet hands.
• Clean only as recommended — soft cloth only, no thinners/alcohol/solvents.
• Ensure proper ventilation — don't block vents or use built-in cabinetry that restricts airflow; keep 2" clearance on all sides.
• Keep away from heat sources (radiators, stoves, other heat-producing amplifiers).
• Don't defeat the grounding/polarization means.
• Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched.
• Connect only to the power type specified in the manual or marked on the unit.
• Unplug during long non-use periods; use only manufacturer-specified attachments/accessories.
• Use only manufacturer-recommended carts/stands, and move cart/appliance combinations carefully.
• Mount to wall/ceiling only as recommended; avoid direct sunlight, heating units, damp or dusty locations, and never mount under a kitchen cabinet.
• Prevent objects/liquids from entering enclosure openings.
• Do not attempt user service beyond what's described in the operating instructions.
• Have the unit serviced by qualified personnel if: the power cord/plug is damaged, objects have fallen or liquid has spilled into it, it's been exposed to rain, it doesn't operate normally, or it's been dropped/damaged.

This equipment has been tested and complies with Class B digital device limits under FCC Rules Part 15, providing reasonable protection against interference in residential installations (Canadian ICES-003 / NMB-003 compliant as well).
