    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation and operating instructions for the HAI UPB™ Wall Switch and Auxiliary Switch — models 35A00-1 (600W Dimmer), 35A00-1CFL (600W CFL/LED Dimmer), 35A00-3 (600W Non-Dimming Switch), and 37A00-1 (Auxiliary Switch) — covering wiring, local rocker operation, UPB setup, de-rating, and compatible dimmable bulbs.

    Read Before Installing

This HAI UPB™ Wall Switch and Auxiliary Switch is intended for installation in accordance with the National Electrical Code and local codes and regulations. It is recommended that a qualified electrician perform this installation. Retain these instructions for reference.

To reduce the risk of overheating and possible damage to other equipment, when configured as dimming-capable, do not install to control a receptacle, a motor-operated appliance, or a transformer-supplied appliance. This product is for indoor use only. Connect only copper wire to this device.

    Important Notes Prior to Installation

    • All HAI UPB™ Wall Switches require a neutral (white) connection wire.
    • Be sure that all power to the load has been disconnected by turning off the circuit breaker. Installing an HAI UPB™ Wall Switch or Auxiliary Switch with power on may expose you to dangerous voltage and may damage the device.

    Overview

HAI UPB™ Wall Switch: Allows local control of lighting via a Decora-style rocker switch. Incorporates UPB™ two-way powerline communication technology for remote control by UPB-compatible controllers, and can transmit UPB messages (including current light level) when turned on, off, brightened, or dimmed. The HAI Dimmer Switch can store up to 16 preset light levels and fade rates to create lighting scenes. The HAI Non-Dimming Switch controls loads such as fluorescent lights and ceiling fans.

HAI Auxiliary Switch (37A00-1): An optional companion device for multi-way circuits, with a Decora-style rocker switch that controls the load in the same manner as the Wall Switch's rocker.

*Connecting the blue and/or gray wire to neutral sets the color of the LED indicator: connect blue for a blue indicator, gray for a red indicator, or both for a magenta indicator. The blue/gray wire may be connected to neutral or earth ground — neutral is recommended.

    Installation Procedure

    1. Be sure all power to the load has been disconnected by turning off the circuit breaker.
    2. If applicable, remove the faceplate and existing wall switch from the wall box and disconnect its wires. Identify the "Line," "Neutral," "Load," and "Traveler" (if applicable) wires.
    3. Be sure the air-gap switch lever on the HAI UPB Wall Switch is fully open.
    4. Remove Âľ" of insulation from each wire on the HAI UPB Wall Switch. Install by connecting wires per the wiring configuration (see Figure 5 wiring diagram).
    5. Install any optional HAI Auxiliary Switch per the wiring configuration.
    6. After all connections are made, be certain all wire connectors are firmly attached and there is no exposed copper.
    7. Gently place the wires and HAI UPB Wall Switch into the wall box with the LED at the top of the device. Using the supplied screws, attach the switch to the wall box.
    8. Before installing the faceplate, restore power to the circuit, then fully close the air-gap switch lever.
    9. After testing the HAI UPB Wall Switch and Auxiliary Switch for proper local operation, install a Decora-style faceplate over each switch.

    Wiring Notes

    • All HAI UPB Wall Switches require a neutral (white) connection.
    • The Line (black) wire must be accessible for installation of all HAI Auxiliary Switches; it may be connected to either phase of the 120/240V supply.
    • Multi-way circuits (one or more Auxiliary Switches connected to a Wall Switch) let a group of switches control the same light or set of lights.

    Air-Gap Switch

The HAI UPB Wall Switch has an air-gap switch lever that removes all power from the load for safe switch installation and light bulb replacement. To activate: using a fingernail, pry open the lever at the groove and swing it fully open so it's perpendicular to the bottom rim. After servicing, push the lever fully closed (parallel to the bottom rim) — it must be fully closed for normal operation.

    Changing Switch Color

The switch plate is supplied white; additional colors are available from your HAI distributor. To change: disconnect the switch from all power, then use a small-bladed screwdriver to gently depress the upper and lower latch on one side while lifting up on the plate; once released on one side, remove the plate from the other side. Align the latches of the new switch plate to the mounting plate openings and gently snap into place.

    HAI Wall Switch De-Rating

In two-gang installations, no de-rating is needed for the 35A00-1, 35A00-1CFL, or 35A00-3. In three-gang installations, each switch must be de-rated from 600W to 500W.

Model Device Maximum Load Next to One Dimmer Next to Two Dimmers
    35A00-1 600W 600W 500W
    35A00-1CFL 600W 600W 500W
    35A00-3 600W 600W 500W

HAI Dimmer Switch Operation (Factory Default)

The HAI Dimmer Switch has a Decora-style rocker switch. Many configurable items can be set using the UPB™ UPStart configuration software; below is the factory default operation.

Rocker Event Top Rocker Bottom Rocker
Single-Tap Brightens the light to 100% (on) at default fade rate and restarts auto shut-off timer (if applicable). Fades the light to 0% (off) at default fade rate.
Double-Tap Snaps the light to 100% (on) and overrides auto shut-off. Snaps the light to 0% (off).
Hold Starts fading (brightening) the light towards 100% at default fade rate and restarts auto shut-off timer (if applicable). Starts fading (dimming) the light towards 0% at default fade rate.
Release Stops brightening the light and restarts auto shut-off timer (if applicable). Stops dimming the light.

HAI Non-Dimming Switch Operation (Factory Default)

Rocker Event Top Rocker Bottom Rocker
Single-Tap Turns the load on and starts auto shut-off timer (if applicable). Turns the load off.

    LED Indicator

The HAI UPB Wall Switch's multi-color LED is normally lit blue when the load is off, and turns off when the load is on or set above 0%. The LED flashes magenta while the auto shut-off timer is running (if the configured LED option is "always off," the LED remains off during the timeout period). If used, the LED on the HAI Auxiliary Switch is always lit.

    HAI Auxiliary Switch Operation

The HAI UPB Wall Switch can connect to one or more HAI Auxiliary Switches to create multi-way lighting circuits. Each Auxiliary Switch's rocker controls the load the same way as the connected Wall Switch's rocker. When connected, its LED stays continually on while power is applied.

    Setup Mode

To configure the HAI UPB Wall Switch using an HAI controller or a PC running UPB UPStart configuration software, put it into Setup Mode:

    Step Operation
1 Tap the rocker switch quickly 5 times. The switch will flash the lighting load once and blink its LED blue to indicate Setup Mode.
2 The switch will automatically exit Setup Mode after 5 minutes.

Note: Setup mode and blink mode take precedence over auto shut-off. If the auto shut-off timer is running when setup or blink mode starts, the timer resets and is disabled until setup/blink mode expires.

    Reset to Factory Default Settings

    Step Operation
1 On the switch you want to reset, tap the rocker switch quickly 5 times.
2 The switch flashes the lighting load once and blinks its LED blue to indicate it's ready to be reset.
3 Tap the rocker switch quickly 10 times to reset to factory default.
4 The switch flashes the lighting load once and blinks its LED red to indicate it has been reset.
5 Tap the rocker switch once more to stop the LED from blinking.
