PulseWorx DAT-4 — Digital Astronomical Timer Programming Guide

Programming guide for the PulseWorx Digital Astronomical Timer (DAT-4) — a 4-channel powerline (UPB) timer supporting time-of-day, sunrise/sunset, and day-of-week scheduling for up to 16 timer events.

Function

SimpleWorx products provide simple remote control for lighting and other electrical loads without running any new wiring — they link to one another by communicating over existing electrical power wires. One transmitter can link to as many receivers as necessary, and each receiver can link to up to eight transmitters.

The DAT-4 controls 4 different channels/groups with sixteen timer events. Each event can be set for a specific time of day, a specific day of the week (or every day), sunrise (with 15-minute offsets), or sunset (with 15-minute offsets). Sunrise/sunset calculations are made each day based on the latitude and longitude entered during setup (find your coordinates at itouchmap.com/latlong.html).

Example schedule: Event 1 could turn on landscape lights 15 minutes before sunset on Channel 1; Event 2 could turn those lights off at midnight on Channel 3. Most applications need only a simple on/off pair, but additional on/off event sets can be added as needed.

Important Safety Instructions

• Do not use this product for other than its intended purpose.

Installation Overview

Setup steps:

1. Set the current time and date
2. Enter your time zone (Eastern, Central, etc.)
3. Select daylight saving time, if applicable
4. Enter your location (latitude and longitude)
5. Create timer event schedules
6. Link the SimpleWorx Receivers you want controlled to any or all of the four channels

Basic Operation

The DAT-4 display has three buttons — "OFF / -", "ON / +", and "SET" — plus a beeper and a Link button on the side.

• SET button: tap to select one of the 4 channels for manual control (you'll hear a beep). Press and hold for 3 seconds to enter programming mode.
• Manual operation: with a channel selected, press "OFF / -" or "ON / +" to turn the Linked Modules of that channel off or on.
• Link button (side of unit): used to link the DAT-4 to SimpleWorx Receivers. Choose the channel to link using the Set button first.

Setup / Programming

Tip: Programming is easier if the DAT-4 is plugged into an extension cord so it can be held for easier viewing. The DAT-4 has a battery backup, so settings are not lost when disconnected from power.

To enter the Program Menu, press and hold SET for 3 seconds — you'll hear a beep and the display shows "PROGRAM MENU: TIME/DATE." Use the "OFF/ON" button to scroll through the menu, and tap SET to enter a section.

Setting Time/Date

1. Set Hour: use – and + to select the hour (24-hour military format), press SET to confirm.
2. Set Minute: use – and + to select the minute, press SET to confirm.
3. Set Day-of-Week: use – and + to select the current day, press SET to confirm.
4. Set Month: use – and + to select the current month, press SET to confirm.
5. Set Date: use – and + to select the current date, press SET to confirm.
6. Set Year: use – and + to select the current year, press SET to confirm.
7. Apply Changes? use – and + to select Yes/No, press SET to save.

Setting Location

1. Set Time Zone: use – and + to select your time zone, press SET.
2. Set DST Rule: use – and + to select Yes/No for daylight saving time observance.
3. Set Longitude: use – and + to set longitude, press SET.
4. Set Latitude: use – and + to set latitude, press SET.
5. Apply Changes? use – and + to select Yes/No, press SET to apply.

A major-city lookup table is included in the back of the manual — find the closest city and use its coordinates. Example: for a contractor in Northridge, CA, the coordinates 118/34 will work well anywhere within a 150-mile radius of Los Angeles. Selected reference points: Los Angeles, CA (118, 34); New York, NY (73, 40); Chicago, IL (87, 41); San Diego, CA (117, 32); Seattle, WA (122, 47); Denver, CO (105, 39).

Setting Schedule (Timer Events)

1. Use – and + to scroll through each timer event (T01–T16), press SET to enter programming for that event.
2. Action: use – and + to select the action — CH1-ON, CH1-OFF, through CH04-OFF. Press SET to confirm.
3. Hour: use – and + to select hour 00–23, SUNRISE, or SUNSET. Press SET to confirm.
4. Offset (if Sunrise/Sunset chosen): set offset minutes from 00 to ±90 minutes. Press SET to confirm.
5. Minute (if a fixed hour was chosen): use – and + to set the minute. Press SET to confirm.
6. Every Day? use – or + to choose Yes/No. Press SET to confirm.
7. Day selection (if "No" to Every Day): use – or + to choose Yes/No for each day of the week individually, pressing SET to confirm each.
8. Apply Change: "NO" is the default — use – or + to select YES and press SET to save.

Repeat these steps for all 16 events, then scroll to EXIT and press SET to leave the Program Menu. The display then shows the day of week, date, time, and the channel set for manual control.

Wiring

The DAT-4 connects to Neutral, Line, and Ground on the powerline side, and links (via the SPC™ powerline protocol, not direct wiring) to SimpleWorx receiver devices such as the PMR-AC, which in turn switch loads like landscape lighting transformers or other AC loads.

Linking a Transmitter to a Receiver

1. Use the Set button on the display to choose which channel (CH#1–CH#4) you want to link devices to.
2. Press and hold the Link button on the side of the unit for 6 seconds. The LED blinks GREEN.
3. The display indicates "Linking CH# X to Receivers…" (X being 1–4).
4. At the SimpleWorx Receiver, press and hold the rocker switch or link button for 6 seconds. The LED blinks GREEN and flashes its load (if connected).
5. Within 30 seconds, the receiver indicates the two devices have "LINKED" when the load flashes and the LED stops blinking. Additional receivers can be put into Link Mode to add them to the same channel.

To exit Link Mode without linking, tap the link button once. Link Mode automatically times out after 5 minutes.

Clearing the Links

1. Press and hold the LINK button for at least 6 seconds — the LED blinks green.
2. Tap the button 10 times to clear the link.
3. The LED flashes red 10 times before returning to solid RED, indicating all receivers associated with that channel have been removed.
