    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation and operation manual for the Simply Automated UMA Appliance Module — a UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) plug-in module that turns 120VAC appliances and fluorescent lamps on and off (including timed-off) via digital commands sent over existing electrical wiring.

    Function

The Appliance Module, model UMA, turns appliances and fluorescent lamps on/off (and timed off) based on digital commands received over the power wiring from a remote UPB controller. UPB controllers and modules can be located anywhere in the home — no additional wiring is required, and no radio frequency signals are used for communication.

    Important Safety Instructions

    • Read and follow all safety instructions.
    • Keep away from water — if the product contacts water or another liquid, unplug immediately.
    • Never use products that have been dropped or damaged.
    • Do not use this product outdoors or for other than its intended use.
    • Do not connect multiple lamps/appliances that, combined, exceed the product's maximum load rating.
    • Install out of reach of small children to avoid risk of fire, burns, injury, and electric shock.
    • Do not cover the product with any material while in use.
    • This product uses polarized plugs and sockets (one blade wider than the other) to reduce shock risk — these fit only one way. If they don't fit, consult a technician. Do not use an extension cord unless the plug can be fully inserted, and do not alter the plug.

    Installation

The Appliance Module is designed for indoor use with devices that plug into a power outlet.

    1. Locate the appliance or fluorescent lamp to be controlled and unplug it from the wall outlet. Plug the UMA module into the wall outlet.
    2. Plug the appliance or fluorescent lamp into the socket on the bottom of the module. The appliance rating must not exceed 15 amps.
    3. Turn the appliance or fluorescent lamp's power switch ON.
    4. If desired, another device can be plugged into the socket on the front of the module, which is always powered.

Caution: Do not insert metal objects into the module, specifically the Program Switch, while it is connected to power.

    Configuration

    1. Configuration requires the UPB setup/configuration software (UPStart) and a model UMC Computer Interface Module. Download the latest version of UPStart from the Simply Automated website before configuring. First-time users should also download the Quick Start Guide and use the Installation Wizard in UPStart.
    2. When configuring a UPB system, it may be necessary to place the UMA in SETUP mode: press the Program Switch five times rapidly using a non-metallic toothpick or ink pen. The indicator continuously blinks GREEN while in SETUP mode. To exit, press the Program Switch once, or wait five minutes.

    Operation

The Appliance Module operates according to commands sent by the controller. The indicator glows RED when the controlled outlet is OFF, and GREEN when it's ON.

    Manual Override

Two manual override methods allow the connected lamp to be turned on/off locally:

    1. Simply turn the lamp OFF and back ON using the lamp's own switch — the UMA senses the switch change and outputs power accordingly.
    2. Press and hold the Program Switch on the UMA for at least 3 seconds — the indicator continuously blinks RED, and the appliance can then be turned on/off by pressing the Program Switch. Press and hold again for 3+ seconds to exit manual override.

    Timer Function

Controller commands can turn on the UMA and load a preset timer period; the UMA automatically turns off at the end of the period. Available preset times: 1 Sec., 5 Sec., 30 Sec., 1 Min., 2 Min., 4 Min., 10 Min., 20 Min., 30 Min., 40 Min., 50 Min., 1 Hr., 2 Hrs., 3 Hrs., and 4 Hrs.

    UPB Factory Default Settings

To restore factory defaults: place the UMA in SETUP mode, then press the Program Switch ten times. Press the switch twice more to exit this mode.
