    Installation guide for the PCS (PulseWorx) ILR-10K In-Line Resistor, a 10K ohm load resistor that fixes LED fixtures/bulbs that flicker or fail to turn off completely at certain dim levels.

    Why Would I Need an ILR-10K?

    This load resistor solves the common problem of LED fixtures and bulbs that won't turn off completely, or that flicker at certain dim levels. Installing a small load resistor (ILR-10K) in parallel with the LED load frequently eliminates these issues.

    Function

    The load resistor dissipates only 1.4W at 100% brightness (less at lower settings). This heat generation is low enough that the resistor can be installed behind the dimmer switch or at the load/fixture location.

    Wiring Diagram Notes

    The load resistor has high resistance (10K ohm) and is designed to be wired directly across 120VAC. The 2 leads of the ILR-10K must be wired in PARALLEL with the LED light — between the LOAD (red) and NEUTRAL (white) wires.

    Important — parallel, not series: the load resistor must be wired between the switch load wire (RED) and neutral (WHITE), in parallel with the LED. If it is incorrectly installed in SERIES with the load, the LED will simply stay off — this won't damage the resistor, switch, or LED, but the LED will never turn on.

    PCS Filter Inductor (ILC) note: if a PCS filter inductor (ILC) is also being installed (not required for the ILR-10K), it must be wired in SERIES with the load — the opposite of the ILR-10K. If the ILC is incorrectly wired in parallel, it will overheat and burn out immediately due to its very low resistance (0.5 ohm), appearing as a short circuit and likely damaging the switch. Refer to the separate ILC installation guide for that component.

    Installation

    Note: installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician only, in accordance with all applicable codes including the National Electrical Code (NEC). The circuit breaker or WS1DL dimmer must be turned off during installation.

    1. Turn off power at the main breaker panel.
    2. Locate the load (red) and neutral (white) wires, either behind the dimmer location or at the LED light location.
    3. Install the ILR-10K between the two wires. The leads may be wired in either direction, but must remain in PARALLEL with the LED light.
    4. Use appropriate wire nuts to make a solid electrical connection, and secure the wires and the placement of the ILR-10K.

    Operation

    Once the ILR-10K is properly installed, power up the WS1DL dimmer and test the LED light's complete turn-off state and its various dimming levels — both the flickering and incomplete-shutoff issues should be resolved.
