    September 08, 2026 3 min read

Complete installation instructions for the Optex QX Infinity series wide-angle outdoor battery-operated detectors (QXI-R, and QXI-RDT-X5/X8/X9 dual-tech models with microwave detection).

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation instructions for the Optex QX Infinity series wide-angle outdoor battery-operated detectors (QXI-R and QXI-RDT-X5/X8/X9 microwave-assisted models).

    Overview

The QX Infinity series is a battery-operated, wide-angle outdoor passive infrared (PIR) detector. The base model (QXI-R) uses PIR detection only; the QXI-RDT-X5, QXI-RDT-X8, and QXI-RDT-X9 variants add microwave detection at different frequencies (10.525 GHz, 10.587 GHz, and 9.425 GHz respectively) for dual-technology confirmation. Units are powered by a single CR123A battery (3V DC, 1,300 mAh, not included) and are rated IP54 for outdoor wall mounting.

    Safety Warnings

    • Do not touch the internal parts marked with the caution symbol.
    • Remove the unused battery in case of battery-sharing configurations (see the OPTEX web manual for details).
    • These units are designed to detect an intruder and activate an alarm control panel. As only a part of a complete system, OPTEX cannot accept responsibility for any damages or other consequences resulting from an intrusion.
    • QXI-RDT-X5, QXI-RDT-X8, and QXI-RDT-X9 must be installed and operated with a minimum distance of 20 cm between the radiator and the body to comply with EU radiation exposure limits.

    Mounting

    • Multi Level mode: mount at 2.2 m (7'3") to 2.7 m (8'11") height.
    • Pet Alley mode: mount at 0.8 m (2'7") to 1.2 m (4') height — removes lower-area detection to avoid triggering on small animals.
    • Mounting is wall-only (outdoor or indoor). Optional accessories: CA-1W(W) wall mount bracket, CA-2C(W) ceiling mount bracket.
    • To open the cover: unlock with a flathead screwdriver, then lift the cover up. A cover lock screw is available as an option.

    DIP Switch Settings

    Switch Function ON OFF
    [1] LED ON OFF (default)
    [2] Alarm output N.O. N.C. (default)
[3]/[4] PIR sensitivity Low / Middle (default) / High / Super High — see combination chart in manual
    [5] Battery saving timer 5 s 120 s (default)
    [6]/[7] Future use
[8] MW (microwave, RDT models only)

    Detection Area

    • PIR coverage: 12.0 m (40') at 120° wide angle.
    • Multi Level zones: 40 zones.
    • Pet Alley zones: 18 zones.
    • Detectable speed: 0.3 to 2.0 m/s (1' to 6'7"/s).

    Walk Test

    1. Close the cover.
    2. Walk test runs for 3 minutes.
    3. Walk test ends automatically; LED flashes 5 times to confirm.

Note: With the cover open, the tamper switch activates and the LED function is enabled regardless of the DIP switch [1] setting. When the cover is closed, the walk test timer starts and automatically returns to normal mode after 3 minutes. If the unit is powered up with the cover already closed, it will not enter walk test mode — open and close the cover once to activate the walk test timer.
