Optex WX Shield Series (WXS-RAM / WXS-RDAM-X5) — 180° Wide Angle Outdoor Detector Installation Instructions

Quick-reference installation instructions for the Optex WX Shield series 180° wide-angle outdoor battery-operated detectors (WXS-RAM anti-masking model, and WXS-RDAM-X5 with added 10.525 GHz microwave detection).

Overview

The WX Shield series is a battery-operated, 180° wide-angle outdoor PIR detector with anti-masking protection. WXS-RAM is PIR-only; WXS-RDAM-X5 adds microwave detection (10.525 GHz) for dual-technology confirmation. Units run on lithium batteries (3.0–3.6V DC) and are rated IP55 for outdoor wall or pole mounting.

Safety Warnings

• Do not overlap the detection area of two or more WXS-RDAM units when installed close together.
• Do not touch the microwave sensor unit.
• Remove the lock screw if it is used, before opening the cover.
• These units are designed to detect an intruder and activate an alarm control panel. As only a part of a complete system, OPTEX cannot accept responsibility for any damages or other consequences resulting from an intrusion.
• WXS-RDAM-X5 must be installed and operated with a minimum distance of 20 cm between the radiator and the body to comply with EU radiation exposure limits.

Mounting

• Low mount: 0.8 to 1.2 m (2'7" to 4') height; detection range 2.5 to 12.0 m (stepless adjustment).
• High mount: fixed 2.0 m (6'8") height; detection range fixed at 9.0 m (30').
• Select either Low or High mount before starting installation — this is set via the physical mounting position, not a switch.
• Mounting is wall or pole (indoor/outdoor). Optional accessories: BH-01 battery holder, WXI-BB back box, PMP-01 pole mount plate, MKP-01 area masking plate (for areas beyond the included masking plates).
• Recommended mounting height for low mount is 1.0 m. Use the built-in level indicator to level the unit during installation.
• The wall tamper switch activates and remains tripped if the tamper part is broken off the mounting surface.

Figures assume one battery used, no power sharing with the transmitter, LED off, and anti-masking on.

Wireless Transmitter Wiring

Connector color code (transmitter side → main unit side):

• Red: Power (+)
• Black: Power (−)
• White: Alarm (R)
• Yellow: Alarm (R) / Alarm (L) depending on connection example
• Gray: Alarm (L)
• Green: Trouble
• Blue: Trouble

For transmitters with three inputs, set the detection mode using DIP switches No. 2 and No. 3 on the wireless transmitter (N.C. or N.O.). For transmitters with one or two inputs, leave DIP switch No. 2 and No. 3 set to OFF.

DIP / Switch Settings

PIR sensitivity is set independently for left and right sides via the PIR sensitivity dial (High / Middle (default) / Low).

Walk Test

1. Close the cover unit — walk test starts automatically.
2. LED lights for 2 seconds when the intended object is detected.
3. LED blinks for 5 seconds when the walk test expires, 3 minutes after closing the cover.

LED Indication

• Red — Warm-up: blinks for 60 sec or less.
• Red — Alarm: lights for 2 sec.
• Red — Masking detection: blinks 3 times, repeats.
• Red — High mount setting: blinks when the tamper switch is activated (indicates high-mount configuration).
• Yellow — Warm-up / MW detection (WXS-RDAM only): lights for 2 sec on microwave detection.
