Installation and configuration guide for the OPTEX OVS-01GT Vehicle Detection Sensor for gate automation systems.
Complete installation and configuration guide for the OPTEX OVS-01GT Vehicle Detection Sensor for gates — a combination microwave/ultrasonic sensor used to activate and protect vehicle gates and barrier arms.
The OVS-01GT combines an FMCW microwave sensor (detects vehicle presence) with an ultrasonic sensor (detects vehicles close to the unit). A vehicle alone triggers a relay output; a pedestrian alone (detected only by the ultrasonic sensor) does not trigger output unless sensitivity is set to level 5. If a vehicle is present the sensor holds detection status until the vehicle leaves the area.
Known quirks: a pedestrian or object remaining after a vehicle leaves can hold the sensor in a "detected" state; flags, banners, tall weeds, or snow can prevent the sensor from reverting to non-detection; two vehicles tailgating very closely may register as one vehicle.
Two standard installation types, both at 500mm (19.69 in.) sensor height from the ground:
Detectable vehicle conditions: minimum ground clearance 150mm (5.91 in.); approach speed 2–20 kph (1.24–12.43 mph). Sensor performance can be affected by a non-vertical pole, ice/snow/dirt on the sensor, a frozen sensor unit, heavy snow or rain, water splash, or nearby ultrasonic noise sources (vehicle horns, motorcycle engines, air brakes).
| Terminal | Function |
|---|---|
| Power | 12–24VDC supply |
| Output | Non-voltage relay, N.O./N.C. switchable, 30VDC 0.3A or less (resistive load) |
| Input | Active High/Low switchable — Wake or Inhibit function |
Applicable wire: solid 0.5–1.2mm (AWG 30-16); stranded 0.3–2.0sq (AWG 22-14).
Calibration records the empty background of the detection area so the sensor can reliably distinguish real vehicles. Perform it after every installation, and again after any change to installation height, direction, or Microwave Maximum Range.
To cancel calibration, press and hold the Calibration button again during the initial 10-second slow-blink phase (cannot cancel during the fast-blink phase).
Press the Area Check button to enter check mode (indicator blinks green). Walk the lane from center outward — the indicator changes from green (no detection) to yellow/purple/red as it detects the microwave and/or ultrasonic zones, marking the edge of coverage. Walk the lane edges to confirm the indicator stays green (no false detection). Press Area Check again to return to normal operation; it also auto-reverts after 30 seconds of continuous non-detection.
| Setting | Options | Factory Default |
|---|---|---|
| Output | N.O. / N.C. | N.O. |
| Sensor Mode | Activation / Vehicle Protection | Vehicle Protection |
| Microwave Maximum Range | 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 / 4.5 / 5 / 5.5 m | 3.5 m (11.48 ft.) |
| Setting | Purpose | Range / Default |
|---|---|---|
| Sensitivity | Overall vehicle detection strength — higher catches more vehicles but reacts slower to non-detection | 1–5, default 3 (level 5 disables human-cancel) |
| Human Cancel Adjust | Distinguishes pedestrians from vehicles | 1–5, default 3 |
| Presence Detection Timer | Periodic auto-recalibration to stop a stationary object from being "stuck" as detected | 5 / 60 / 180 min / Infinity, default 5 min |
| Sensitivity Boost Timer | Temporarily boosts sensitivity after a vehicle passes (for gates where a vehicle may roll back on a slope) | Off / 5 / 10 / 20 / 40 sec, default Off |
| Ultrasonic Maximum Range | Limits ultrasonic sensing distance to avoid a fixed obstruction (e.g. the gate itself) | Off / 0.6 / 0.8 / 1 m, default 1 m |
| Input | External Wake or Inhibit trigger, active High or Low | Wake L / Wake H / Inhibit L / Inhibit H, default Wake L |
| Symptom | Likely Cause / Action |
|---|---|
| Indicator won't turn on | Verify 12-24VDC power supply and correct polarity. |
| Detection not conveyed to system device | Check relay wiring and confirm correct N.O./N.C. output contact type for the device. |
| Calibration doesn't complete / errors out | Remove pedestrians/moving objects from the detection area; check for a low/tilted mount or ground irregularity; reduce ultrasonic range if needed. |
| Vehicle occasionally or never detected | Verify power, re-run calibration, adjust sensor direction, increase sensing distance or sensitivity. |
| Sensor won't revert to non-detection / slow to clear | Remove obstruction (person, debris, snow), re-calibrate, adjust direction, or reduce sensing distance. |
| Gate bar itself is detected, repeatedly cycling | Reduce sensitivity/sensing distance, ensure 700mm+ clearance from the bar, align sensor parallel to the bar, remove any bar curtain. |
| Detects objects outside the intended area | Reduce sensitivity and microwave sensing distance; correct sensor direction. |
| Detects pedestrians | Reduce sensitivity; verify correct Sensor Mode for the application. |
| Detection too slow / too late | Increase sensitivity and/or microwave sensing distance; verify correct Sensor Mode. |
