    Complete installation and configuration guide for the OPTEX OVS-01GT Vehicle Detection Sensor for gates — a combination microwave/ultrasonic sensor used to activate and protect vehicle gates and barrier arms.

    Safety Precautions

    • WARNING: Do not touch the main unit or power terminals with wet hands — electric shock may occur.
    • WARNING: Never disassemble or modify the unit — risk of fire or electric shock.
    • WARNING: If smoke or an unusual smell occurs, immediately turn off power and contact the installer.
    • WARNING: Always turn off system power during installation and wiring.
    • CAUTION: Do not spray the unit with a bucket, hose, or high-pressure washer.
    • CAUTION: Follow the documented wiring and pole-mounting steps exactly to avoid the unit falling or cables loosening.
    • CAUTION: Clean the unit regularly; discontinue use if any abnormality is found.

    How Detection Works

    The OVS-01GT combines an FMCW microwave sensor (detects vehicle presence) with an ultrasonic sensor (detects vehicles close to the unit). A vehicle alone triggers a relay output; a pedestrian alone (detected only by the ultrasonic sensor) does not trigger output unless sensitivity is set to level 5. If a vehicle is present the sensor holds detection status until the vehicle leaves the area.

    Known quirks: a pedestrian or object remaining after a vehicle leaves can hold the sensor in a "detected" state; flags, banners, tall weeds, or snow can prevent the sensor from reverting to non-detection; two vehicles tailgating very closely may register as one vehicle.

    Installation Recommendations

    Two standard installation types, both at 500mm (19.69 in.) sensor height from the ground:

    • Barrier Gate: mount 700mm (27.56 in.) from the gate bar, angled at 90° or 45° depending on lane geometry. Choose Vehicle Protection or Activation operation type based on function.
    • Slide Gate: mount 700mm from the gate on the public side, angled 90°; secure-side sensor mounted at 30° facing the vehicle path.
    • Always mount on a vertical pole — a tilted pole causes the ultrasonic sensor to falsely detect the ground.
    • On sloped ground, adjust mounting height so the effective detection height stays at 500mm from grade (may reduce detection capability vs. a level installation).
    • Keep flags, banners, signboards, and vegetation out of the detection area — moving objects delay or block the return to non-detection status.
    • Avoid fluorescent lighting near the detection area; it can interfere with sensor operation.
    • A gate bar curtain can cause unstable detection — remove or relocate it.

    Detectable vehicle conditions: minimum ground clearance 150mm (5.91 in.); approach speed 2–20 kph (1.24–12.43 mph). Sensor performance can be affected by a non-vertical pole, ice/snow/dirt on the sensor, a frozen sensor unit, heavy snow or rain, water splash, or nearby ultrasonic noise sources (vehicle horns, motorcycle engines, air brakes).

    Installation Workflow

    1. Verify the installation location meets the conditions above.
    2. Drill pilot holes and mount the sensor to the pole(s), run wiring through the pole, and fix at the correct angle (90° or 45°, adjustable ±30° in 5° steps after mounting).
    3. Remove the front cover, detach the sensor unit, fix the base to the pole, wire the terminals, then reattach the sensor unit and base.
    4. Verify/adjust basic settings (Output, Sensor Mode, Microwave Maximum Range).
    5. Perform calibration.
    6. Check the detection area and adjust angle/range as needed; re-calibrate after any adjustment.
    7. Run a full system operation check with an actual vehicle on the left, center, and right of the lane.
    8. Adjust advanced settings if needed (sensitivity, human cancel, timers, input mode).
    9. Reattach the front cover and tighten the retaining screw.

    Calibration

    Calibration records the empty background of the detection area so the sensor can reliably distinguish real vehicles. Perform it after every installation, and again after any change to installation height, direction, or Microwave Maximum Range.

    1. Ensure the detection area is completely clear of vehicles, pedestrians, and objects.
    2. Press and hold the Calibration button for 2 seconds. The indicator blinks blue slowly for 10 seconds (preparation — keep the area clear), then blinks quickly for 2 seconds (calibration in progress).
    3. On success the indicator turns solid green. If the indicator alternates red/blue, calibration failed — clear obstructions (pedestrians, signage, ground irregularities, low/tilted mounting) and retry.

    To cancel calibration, press and hold the Calibration button again during the initial 10-second slow-blink phase (cannot cancel during the fast-blink phase).

    Detection Area Check

    Press the Area Check button to enter check mode (indicator blinks green). Walk the lane from center outward — the indicator changes from green (no detection) to yellow/purple/red as it detects the microwave and/or ultrasonic zones, marking the edge of coverage. Walk the lane edges to confirm the indicator stays green (no false detection). Press Area Check again to return to normal operation; it also auto-reverts after 30 seconds of continuous non-detection.

    Other Functions

    • Automatic Indicator Off: dims after 30 minutes of no button presses; any button press restores it.
    • Built-in Heater: automatically activates below 5°C (41°F) to reduce frost/snow buildup on the sensor, deactivates at 5°C or above.
    • Unsuitable Environment Notification: a slow green blink warns of a large nearby metal object (e.g. a shutter) potentially degrading microwave performance.
    • Sensor Reset: hold both Calibration and Area Check buttons for 2 seconds to restore all factory defaults (recommended if relocating the sensor).

    Troubleshooting
