    Quick Start Guide for the PCS PulseWorx Wall Switch product line (WS1D, WS1DL, WS1R, WS1E) and the RWS Remote Wall Switch accessory. This model, the WS1R, is the Wall Switch Relay for heavier loads up to 20A — motors, pumps, or ceiling fans that may hum with a dimming switch.

    Models Covered

    • WS1D — Wall Switch Dimmer for incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, inductive, and magnetic low-voltage loads.
    • WS1DL — Wall Switch Dimmer for LED, CFL, incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, inductive, and magnetic low-voltage loads.
    • WS1R — Wall Switch Relay for heavier loads up to 20A, motors, pumps, or ceiling fans.
    • WS1E — Electronic Low Voltage (Reverse Phase) Dimmer, for Electronic Low Voltage capacitive transformers only.
    • RWS — Remote Wall Switch accessory for 3-way applications.

    Function

    PulseWorx products provide remote lighting/load control without new wiring — they link to each other by communicating over existing electrical power wires. The WS1 series combines local rocker-switch control with PCS's UPB® two-way powerline communication technology, giving it remote control from other UPB-compatible controllers. The WS1 stores up to 16 preset light levels and fade rates for lighting scenes, and can transmit UPB messages (including current light-level reports) on rocker switch events.

    The RWS Remote Wall Switch is a low-cost accessory that acts as a secondary Decora-style rocker switch for 3-way circuits, connecting to the WS1 via the single yellow traveler wire found in a traditional 3-way circuit.

    Important Safety Instructions

    • Keep away from water — if the product contacts water or liquid, turn off the circuit breaker and remove it immediately.
    • Never use products that have been dropped or damaged.
    • Do not use outdoors or for purposes other than intended.
    • Do not cover the product with any material while in use.

    Air-Gap Switch

    The WS1D/DL/E rocker switches include an air-gap switch that removes all power from the load for safe bulb replacement. Firmly press the bottom of the rocker until you hear a loud click, or see "SYSTEM OFF" on the top rocker label.

    Installation

    1. Before installing into a wall box, disconnect power (remove fuse or turn breaker off) — installing with power on may expose you to dangerous voltage and damage the product.
    2. Remove the faceplate from the existing wall switch, then unscrew and pull the existing switch out of the wall box.
    3. Disconnect the existing wires; identify Line, Neutral, Load, and Control/Traveler wires.
    4. Wire the PulseWorx Wall Switch (and any RWS connecting wires) per the wiring diagram. Cap off any unused wires.
    5. Gently place the wires and Wall Switch into the box with the LED at the top; screw in place.
    6. Restore power and test for proper local operation before installing the faceplate.
    7. After testing, re-install the faceplate cover(s).

    De-Rating (WS1D)

    For a proper fit in multi-gang installations, one or both break-off tabs on the mounting plate may need removal — the overall rating must then be reduced:

    Multi-Way Circuits

    The Wall Switch is wired directly to the lighting circuit and can optionally be controlled by one or more RWS Remote Wall Switches to create 3-, 4-, or 5-way circuits. Notes:

    • All PCS Wall Switches require a neutral (white) connection.
    • Remote Wall Switches require the Line (black) wire to be accessible — it may connect to either phase of the 120/240V supply.
    • The Remote Wall Switch's gray wire can connect to earth ground or neutral — it only powers the remote's LED (a night-light indicator, not a status indicator).

    Setup Mode

    To configure a UPB system, place the WS1 in SETUP mode by tapping the rocker switch five times rapidly — the load flashes once and the Status LED blinks blue continuously while in SETUP mode. Tap once, or wait five minutes, to exit.

    Note: with UPStart Setup Software, the Status LED can be configured to stay one solid color or change color based on load state.

    Configuration

    The WS1 can be configured manually (adding it to a UPB network and linking to controller buttons — see the Keypad Controller's Manual Configuration Guide) or, more fully, via PCS's UPStart Setup Software, run through a Powerline Interface Module (PIM). UPStart unlocks many additional configurable features beyond the factory defaults.

    Certification & Warranty

    Tested by UL or Intertek Testing Services (nationally recognized independent labs); manufacturing sites are subject to quarterly follow-up inspections. Seller warrants the product against defects in materials and workmanship for five years from the date of purchase (see pcslighting.com for full terms).
