    Installation manual for the Optex HX-40RAM High Mount Outdoor Detector — a battery-operated passive infrared (PIR) motion detector with IR anti-masking, designed for severe outdoor environments.

    Overview

    By utilizing Optex's unique pyro-element, the HX series achieves highly reliable detection performance against false and missed alarms, providing stable and accurate detection in outdoor severe environmental conditions. The HX-40RAM is a battery-operated model with an IR anti-masking feature. Installation and connection methods differ depending on the type and size of the transmitter battery used.

    Before Your Operation

    • Do not repair or modify the product.
    • Keep the product away from water.
    • Mount the unit securely.
    • Recommended mounting height: 2.5 – 3.0 m (8.3 – 10 ft.)

    Detection Area

    At an installation height of 3.0 m (10 ft.), detection range is 12 m (40 ft.) with an 85° field of view. At 2.5 m (8.3 ft.) height, adjust the vertical angle 2.5 degrees (1 click) upward to maintain the same 12 m range.

    Detection length can be reduced using area masking seals applied directly to the lens. Three seal patterns are available for shorter detection lengths: 9.0 m (30 ft.), 5.5 m (18.3 ft.), and 4.0 m (13.3 ft.).

    Preparations — Transmitter & Battery

    To use the HX-40RAM, a transmitter and battery must be prepared first:

    • Transmitter size: the HX-40RAM accommodates transmitters of two sizes — Case 1: 122 × 50 × 33 mm, or Case 2: 80 × 50 × 22 mm. A transmitter with greater dimensions is not applicable.
    • Battery Sharing Possible Case: if the transmitter uses CR123A, CR2, or 1/2AA batteries, power can be shared from the HX-40RAM's battery box to both the detector and the transmitter. Battery type must match the transmitter's requirement.
    • Battery Sharing Impossible Case: if the transmitter's battery type differs, separate batteries are required — use 3 cells of CR123A (recommended) or CR2 for the HX-40RAM. Do not use 1/2AA batteries or the attached dummy batteries/battery lead in this case.

    Warning: Do not use batteries of different capacities (mixing new and used) or of different manufacturers/types together. Failure to observe this may result in explosion, electrolyte leakage, emission of toxic gases, or other outcomes harmful to people and property.

    Installation

    1. Determine the Detection Length

    Apply the appropriate masking seal directly to the lens to set a detection length shorter than the standard 12 meters — choose from the 9.0m, 5.5m, or 4.0m masking patterns.

    2. Mount the Battery

    Remove the battery box from the main unit by opening the claws (2 places) and pulling. Remove the battery box cover by disengaging the bosses. Install batteries observing correct polarity and orientation markings on the battery box, then replace the cover, hooking it firmly by the claws on both sides.

    Caution: Do not let the ends of the red and black wires contact each other — this can cause a short circuit.

    For the Battery Sharing Possible case, place the included battery lead and a dummy battery in the transmitter's battery case (twist and cut off the portion matching the applicable battery type), then connect the alarm cable to the transmitter and close the cover, routing the alarm wire out through the wiring hole.

    3. Mount the Transmitter and Battery Box

    1. Using the included Velcro tape, fix the transmitter to the main unit.
    2. Connect the alarm cable to the terminal block of the main unit.
    3. Install the battery box into the main unit and connect the necessary wires to the terminal block (see Wiring section).
    4. Fix the base to the wall surface.
    5. Mount the main unit and lens onto the base — place the main unit, put the cover on, and tighten the locking screws.

    Caution: If the main unit doesn't easily fit onto the base, the transmitter may be in contact or the wiring may have become caught. Route the battery leads and alarm cable through the grooves as shown; cut off excess wiring length so protruding wires aren't caught by the base.

    4. Mount the Bracket

    Using the bracket, the unit can be adjusted horizontally by ±90°. If the ground is uneven and not parallel with the unit's base, it can also be adjusted vertically by ±20°.

    Caution: Do not change the detection length using the bracket angle — use masking seals to adjust detection length instead.

    1. Remove the up-down lock screw.
    2. Push the shaft cover clip outward to remove the shaft cover.
    3. Loosen the adjustment screw two turns (do not loosen too much or the screw will separate from the unit).
    4. Fasten the bracket to the wall, orienting it according to whether the main unit should face left or right.
    5. Open the up-down lock screw knockout for the bracket.
    6. Install the base on the bracket.
    7. Decide the horizontal angle and tighten the adjustment screw clockwise.
    8. Install the main unit and cover on the base.
    9. Complete "Adjusting the Vertical Angle" (below).
    10. Remove the cover and main unit to tighten the up-down lock screw, then reinstall.
    11. Fit the shaft cover back into place.

    5. Adjust the Vertical Angle

    For correct performance, set the vertical angle parallel to the ground. Decide the desired detection length first (mask the lens if using 9.0m/5.5m/4.0m ranges), then perform a walk test to check whether the vertical angle is correct:

    • If detection occurs only inside the designated distance, angle the unit upward.
    • If detection occurs outside the designated distance, angle the unit downward.
    • If detection matches the designated distance, no adjustment is needed.

    0° is the correct setting for 3m (10 ft.) height installation. Adjust 1 click (2.5° upward) for 2.5m (8.3 ft.) height installation to maintain the 12m (40 ft.) detection range. This setting applies only when the HX is installed vertically to the ground.

    Wiring

    Terminal blocks include: TAMPER (NO/COM/NC — connect to a 24-hour supervisory loop), TROUBLE (OUT/SPARE), ALARM (NO/COM/NC), POWER OUT (–/+), and POWER IN (–/+).

    Battery Sharing Impossible Case wiring notes:

    • Use a transmitter with 2 inputs or a low-battery terminal and connect it to TROUBLE OUTPUT.
    • Alternatively, use 2 small transmitter units — one connected to the alarm wiring and the other to the trouble wiring (units must be small enough to fit in the HX-40RAM's internal spaces).
    • To output a LOW BATTERY SIGNAL to the ALARM OUTPUT terminal, set DIP-SW 5 "Trouble output" to "Trouble output + Alarm."

    PIR Sensitivity & Anti-Masking Sensitivity (dedicated switches)

    • PIR Sensitivity: HIGH / MIDDLE (factory default) / LOW
    • Anti-Masking Sensitivity: HIGH / STD (factory default) / OFF (disabled). Caution: when powering on, keep all objects at least 1 meter from the unit.

    Trouble Signal Outputs

    • Anti-Masking Output: if an object is placed close to the lens surface for more than 180 seconds, the IR Anti-Masking circuit activates and generates a trouble signal. It auto-resets about one minute after the masking object is removed.
    • Low Battery Output: when battery capacity is low, the unit automatically outputs a fixed-time transmission to signal this. Anti-Masking function is cancelled when Low Battery signal is output, to extend battery life — replace all batteries with new ones when this occurs.
