    Instruction guide for the LifeSource UA-767T Talking One-Step Auto-Inflation Digital Blood Pressure Monitor (A&D Medical) — a home blood pressure and pulse monitor with voice announcement and headphone jack.

    Overview

    The UA-767T is an oscillometric blood pressure monitor designed for home use by individuals 18 years or older to measure systolic/diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate. It is not designed to measure blood pressure in people with common arrhythmias (such as premature atrial or ventricular beats, or atrial fibrillation), and is not intended for ambulatory use. The monitor announces readings aloud and includes a headphone jack for private listening.

    Daily self-monitoring of blood pressure is an important way individuals can contribute to maintaining cardiovascular health and catching hypertension before it causes serious consequences. Self-measurement at home supplements — but does not replace — a physician's readings, and provides a more complete blood pressure history over time. Only a qualified medical practitioner should interpret blood pressure results; consult your physician with any questions about your readings.

    Selecting the Correct Cuff

    Using the correct cuff size is important for an accurate reading — a cuff that's too large produces readings lower than actual blood pressure, and a cuff that's too small produces readings that are higher. Measure your upper arm circumference at the midpoint between shoulder and elbow with your arm relaxed at your side.

    To attach the cuff, insert the air connector at the end of the cuff tube into the air socket on the left side of the monitor. If you change cuff size, you may need to adjust the exhaust velocity rate (no adjustment is needed switching between a medium and large cuff with a valve).

    Before You Start — Installing Batteries

    Install 4 type AA (1.5 volt) batteries and attach the cuff to the monitor before use.

    1. Remove the battery compartment cover by gently pushing down on the arrow and sliding the cover forward.
    2. Put in the top row of batteries first, matching the positive (+) and negative (–) terminals to those indicated in the compartment. Make sure the batteries contact the compartment terminals.
    3. Replace the cover by sliding it into the compartment and gently pressing into place.

    Replace batteries when the "Low Battery" symbol appears on the display.

    Taking Your Blood Pressure

    Tips for Blood Pressure Monitoring

    • Relax for about 5 to 10 minutes before measurement.
    • Remove constricting clothing and place the cuff on a bare arm.
    • Unless your physician recommends otherwise, use your left arm.
    • Measure at the same time each day for a consistent history.

    Steps

    1. Sit comfortably with your left arm resting on a flat surface so the center of your upper arm is level with your heart.
    2. Lay your left arm on the table, palm up, and thread the cuff end through the metal loop, smooth side against the arm. Position the tube off-center toward the inner side of the arm, in line with the little finger.
    3. Pull the end of the cuff to tighten it, fold back the extra material, and fasten the Velcro. The cuff should be snug but not too tight — you should be able to insert two fingers between the cuff and your arm.
    4. Before measuring, the pressure switch should be set at least 30 mmHg above the expected systolic pressure — use the guide table below. If the monitor can't detect systolic pressure at the current setting, it will automatically re-inflate to the next higher setting. Don't worry if the switch is set too low.
    5. Press the START button, remain still, and refrain from talking while the cuff inflates to the correct level.
    6. It's normal for the cuff to feel very tight. All display symbols appear briefly, then blinking numerals starting at zero appear as the cuff pressurizes. When inflation completes, the MEASUREMENT IN PROGRESS symbol blinks and beeps with each pulse beat. (Press START at any time to stop inflation.)
    7. Watch the display as the cuff deflates — numbers should decline in increments of 2 to 5 mmHg. Wait for the long beep indicating measurement is complete; systolic/diastolic pressure and pulse rate are then displayed and announced before the cuff deflates.
    8. Example announcement for a systolic reading of 120, diastolic of 73, and pulse of 69: "Your blood pressure is 120 over 73 and pulse is 69." The announcement repeats four times before the monitor automatically shuts off. You can stop the announcement and turn off the monitor at any time by pressing START.
    9. Remove the cuff and record your blood pressure and pulse rate, including the date and time of measurement.

    Note: If your systolic reading is above 210, hold the START button until the switch reaches a value 30 mmHg above the systolic reading. Maximum cuff pressure is 320 mmHg; if reached, the cuff will automatically exhaust to zero. If you set a pressure that's too high, interrupt inflation by pressing START and reset the switch to the next lower setting.

    Using Headphones

    You can use the monitor with headphones for privacy — the headphone jack is on the lower right side of the monitor. Plug the headphone connector into the jack; using headphones ensures only the person using the device hears the announcements.

    Checking & Adjusting Exhaust Velocity

    Exhaust velocity is the rate at which cuff pressure deflates during measurement. It's preset at the factory and generally doesn't need adjustment, but the rate is dependent on cuff size, not arm size — if using a cuff other than the one shipped with the unit, you may need to adjust it.

    1. Put on the arm cuff.
    2. Press START. The unit begins taking a reading.
    3. Watch the display as the cuff deflates. When the MEASUREMENT IN PROGRESS symbol appears, numbers should decline in increments of 2 to 5 mmHg.

    If the exhaust velocity is not between 2 and 5 mmHg, adjust it with the unit powered off:

    1. With a fingernail, remove the thin black plastic disc covering the adjustment screw (skip if not present).
    2. With a small screwdriver, turn the adjustment screw approximately 45° to the right to increase exhaust velocity, or to the left to decrease it.
    3. Repeat the test until the exhaust velocity is between 2 and 5 mmHg.

    Once adjusted for a new cuff size, no further adjustment should be needed unless you change cuff sizes again.

    About Blood Pressure

    Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against the walls of the arteries. Systolic pressure occurs when the heart contracts; diastolic pressure occurs when the heart expands. It's measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg).

    What Affects Blood Pressure

    Blood pressure is affected by age, weight, time of day, activity level, climate, altitude, and season. Walking can raise systolic pressure by 12 mmHg and diastolic pressure by 5.5 mmHg; sleeping can decrease systolic pressure by as much as 10 mmHg. Taking repeated readings without a 5–10 minute interval between them, or without raising your arm to let blood flow back to the heart, can also affect results. Diet beverages with caffeine, alcohol, certain medications, emotional stress, and even tight-fitting clothes can make a difference.

    Hypertension is diagnosed when readings are consistently above normal. Left untreated, it can lead to strokes, heart attacks, and other diseases, and is often called the "silent killer" because it doesn't always produce symptoms. It can usually be controlled through lifestyle changes (not smoking, reducing salt/fat intake, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly), reduced stress, appropriate medication managed by a physician, and regular checkups.

    How the UA-767T Works

    LifeSource monitors use the "oscillometric method" — a noninvasive blood pressure determination technique. The cuff is first inflated until the artery is fully blocked; the monitor then takes measurements as the cuff deflates, examining the pulsatile pressure generated by the arterial wall as it expands and contracts against the cuff with each heartbeat.

    Display Symbols & Troubleshooting

Make sure the cuff tube is properly connected to the monitor, the cuff is securely fastened, the exhaust rate is between 2–5 mmHg, and the air connector is inserted properly into the tube and monitor.
