    Installation instructions for the On-Q/Legrand Core Line Enclosure with Cover — a structured wiring enclosure available in four sizes (14", 20", 28", and 42") with a hinged cover (with lock), a screw-on cover, or as standalone components.

    Introduction

    The On-Q/Legrand Core Line Enclosures are available in four sizes: 14", 20", 28", and 42". Each size is available with a hinged cover (includes lock assembly), a screw-on cover, or as separate products — enclosure only, hinged cover only, or screw-on cover only.

    Enclosure Installation

    Locate the enclosure centrally in the house to minimize cable run lengths, in a climate-controlled area. Temperature must be maintained between 0°C (32°F) and 50°C (122°F), with humidity controlled to prevent condensation. If an electrical outlet is installed in the enclosure, it must comply with all NEC wiring requirements — this is especially important if the enclosure is located in a basement subject to flooding.

    • Caution: Consult local electrical and building codes before installing enclosures, particularly regarding location limitations.
    • Note: The enclosure is not weatherproof — do not locate it outside or anywhere temperature changes and humidity may allow condensation.
    • Note: The enclosure is not fire-rated and should not be mounted in fire-rated walls.

    The enclosure may be surface mounted or recess mounted between studs installed on 16" centers.

    Surface Mounting

    Typical surface mounting is on a 3/4" plywood back board.

    1. Securely mount plywood with rear access knockouts accessible, if needed.
    2. If cable access is through the back of the enclosure, remove wire access knockouts from the rear.
    3. Position the enclosure in the desired location and mark the top of the center keyhole opening (top center of the enclosure).
    4. Install a mounting wood screw at the mark, leaving ½" clearance from the back for the screw head.
    5. Hang the enclosure on the screw and mark the four (4) mounting holes and wire access holes on the plywood; also mark the top and bottom of the enclosure.
    6. If cable access is from the rear, remove the enclosure and cut access holes in the plywood for cables.
    7. Attach the enclosure to the wall using wood screws, removing the top centering screw to avoid interference with modules.

    Note: Access holes may be a large slot, provided it does not extend beyond the enclosure. Remove all rough edges to prevent cable damage. It may be easier to rough-in cable and feed it through the plywood prior to attaching the enclosure.

    Recessed Mounting

    There are two methods for recess mounting. In half-inch drywall installations, the enclosure may be mounted to the front of the studs — bend out the side tabs on each side to 90 degrees, position to the desired height, and fasten using standard screws into the slots in the tabs.

    Alternatively, position the enclosure to the desired height and fasten to the sides of the studs using the slots in the tabs. Do not fully tighten until the enclosure is positioned for the desired depth — drywall depth marks are embossed on the sides of the enclosure. The enclosure should be snug prior to drywall installation but may be adjusted afterward to ensure it's flush with the wall after trim-out.

    Ground cable: Route from the enclosure to the house electrical ground; the ground screw is located inside the bottom of the enclosure.

    Running Power to the Enclosure

    AC power must be run to the enclosure when installing any module that requires AC or DC power to operate. A low-voltage, UL-listed Class 2 plug-in power supply is required for these modules (available from your On-Q distributor).

    1. Remove the knock-out in the bottom of the enclosure and install a single-gang metal outlet box.
    2. Run a length of nonmetallic power cable to the enclosure for connection of a standard 15-amp, 120-volt power receptacle (available as a kit from On-Q, P/N F7526).

    Note: Separation of circuits must be maintained, and electrical wiring must comply with the National Electric Code (NFPA 70), Canadian Electric Code, and all applicable state/local codes.

    Cable Rough-In

    All cabling to and from the enclosure is low-voltage Class 2 or communication cable. Maintain code compliance and good wiring practices, such as separation from power and proper cable retention.

    Note: The enclosure must be grounded — use a minimum of 14 AWG copper wire to connect the ground lug to earth ground.

    Telephone Rough-In

    1. Install Category cable from the enclosure to the telephone company network interface device (NID); label cable near entry to the enclosure and at the outlet location.
    2. Install Category cable from the enclosure to each outlet location, labeling as above.
    3. Position and secure cables per code and good wiring practices to prevent damage during construction.

    Recommendation: Run a second Cat 5e cable from the telephone network interface to the enclosure for future data applications.

    Coax Rough-In

    1. Install Quad Shield RG6 cable from the enclosure to outlet locations, with approximately 3 feet of excess through the appropriate upper access hole.
    2. Install 2-5 Quad Shield solid copper center conductor RG6 cables from the enclosure to any planned dish antenna location, with similar excess.
    3. Install Quad Shield RG6 cable from the enclosure to any media center input and video outlets.
    4. Label all cables at entry to the enclosure and at the outlet/antenna location; secure per code.

    Other Cable Rough-In

    • LAN/data: Install Category 5e cable from the enclosure to the desired outlets.
    • Audio and other low-voltage applications: Install appropriate cable per the application's instructions.
    • Security and control wiring (low-voltage wiring controlling lighting and other household systems): Install security/control cabling from the enclosure to sensors and devices, routed through access holes with ~3 feet of excess, and labeled at both ends. Refer to the security system's installation guide for cable requirements and marking.

    Screw-On Cover Installation

    Note: Only use On-Q/Legrand covers matched to the proper enclosure size.

    1. Partially install the top two (2) screws in the enclosure.
    2. Hang the screw-on cover on the two partially installed screws using the keyhole openings in the cover — it should hang freely and fit flush against the enclosure. If not, check for cables outside the enclosure or pinched cables.
    3. Install the remaining two screws with lock washers and tighten.
    4. Remove the top two screws and reinstall with lock washers; tighten fully.

    Note: Screws must be installed with lock washers to ensure proper cover grounding — the screws and lock washers must be installed to ensure the cover is electrically grounded to the enclosure.

    Hinged Cover Installation

    1. Partially install two (2) hinged cover mounting screws in the top two holes on the enclosure.
    2. Hang the hinged cover on the two partially installed screws using the keyhole openings on the hinge — it should fit flush against the enclosure (surface mount) or the wall (recessed mount). If it doesn't fit properly, check that cables aren't pinched and the lock isn't in the locked position.
    3. Install the remaining hinge screws with lock washers.
    4. Remove the top two screws and reinstall with lock washers; tighten fully.
    5. Lock the hinged cover if desired.

    Important Safety Instructions

    When using your enclosure and installed low-voltage products such as telephone equipment, follow these basic precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and injury:

    1. Read and understand all instructions, and follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product.
    2. Do not use this product near water — for example, near a bathtub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, wet basement, or swimming pool.
    3. Never push objects of any kind into this product through cabinet slots, as they may touch dangerous voltages.
    4. Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.
    5. Maintain a minimum spacing of 1/4" between power-limited, non-power-limited, telco, and coax circuits, as well as between current-carrying and dead-metal parts.
    6. Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines, and never install them during a lightning storm.
    7. Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless specifically designed for such installations.
    8. The receptacle box used must be UL Listed and appropriate for the installation method (flush-mount vs. surface mount).
    9. Enclosure covers must be installed prior to the application of energized services.
    10. Low-voltage modules must be supplied power via a UL Listed, Class 2 plug-in power supply.
    11. Unused cable entry holes require a knock-out seal, installed prior to energizing services, to reduce the risk of electric shock.
    12. Any unused 110VAC receptacles must be covered.

    Note: These enclosures are only compatible with UL Listed Household Fire and Burglary Alarm System unit sub-assemblies as indicated in the control unit's installation instructions.
