OEM Systems PE-620LCRSf — 6-1/2" Angled In-Ceiling Speaker Installation Guide

Installation guide for the OEM Systems PE-620LCRSf — a 6-1/2" 15° angled LCRS (Left/Center/Right/Surround) frameless in-ceiling loudspeaker. Two-way design with a long-throw butyl rubber surround woofer and a dome tweeter for excellent high frequency dispersion.

Speaker Placement

• For front home-theater channels, place speakers 18–36" (0.45–0.9m) from an adjacent wall/surface, measured to the center of the hole. Avoid placing less than 12" (0.3m) from a wall.
• Avoid placing speakers an equal distance from two adjacent surfaces near a corner.
• Rough-in-kits are available to reserve speaker location before drywall is installed.

Wiring

• Use at least 16-gauge speaker cable for runs over 50 feet (15m); cable should be double-insulated. A CL-2 or CL-3 rated cable may be required by local code — avoid single-insulated "zip cord."
• Leave about 2-1/2 feet (0.8m) of free cable at the speaker cut-out and enough length at the other end to reach the electronics.
• Avoid running speaker cable parallel to electrical cable for extended lengths to reduce hum/RF interference. Never staple or nail through electrical conductors.
• Maintain proper polarity: the wire connected to the amplifier's positive terminal must connect to the speaker's positive terminal on every speaker in the system, or sound quality (phase) will be impaired.

Amplifier Operation

These speakers perform well with amplifiers from 5 to 125 Watts RMS. Amplifier "clipping" (distortion caused by demanding more power than the amp can deliver) can damage speakers regardless of the amp's power rating. Damage from clipping is not covered under warranty.

Installation Steps

1. Establish speaker locations; check behind the ceiling for concealed obstructions (wiring, ducts, cross-bracing) using an electronic stud finder. Keep speaker cut-out edges at least 3/4" (19mm) from joists/studs for toggle clamp clearance.
2. Use the cardboard template or plastic compass provided to mark the cut-out, then cut with a drywall saw. Clean debris from the front face of the hole for a flush fit.
3. Run the speaker cable if not already run; strip back the jacket and expose 1/2" (13mm) of each conductor.
4. Optional: place fibrous material (fiberglass or an Insu-Flate ISF-147 acoustically transparent cover) behind the speaker to improve performance and reduce sound transfer to adjacent rooms. If using a rigid enclosure, keep it large enough not to degrade performance; enclosures under 0.75 cu ft (21 liters) should be stuffed with acoustic insulation.
5. Ensure the Toggle Clamps are rotated to their "Home" position before installing. Verify fit in the cut-out, then remove the speaker from the hole.
6. Connect wire conductors to the spring terminals on the back of the speaker — depress each terminal, insert the wire, release. Observe proper polarity (+/-); reversed polarity causes an apparent loss of bass response.
7. Insert the speaker into the hole and turn each of the 3 screws clockwise — the toggle clamps rotate outward to engage the ceiling material. Before fully tightening, orient the speaker toward the listening area (this model has a pivoting tweeter and 15° baffle tilt optimized for off-axis listening — use care not to damage the tweeter dome while aiming). Tighten all 3 Phillips screws. Do not over-tighten — excess torque can damage the toggle and prevent a secure seat.
8. Attach the grilles (magnetically attached — pull at the edge to remove). Grilles can be painted with multiple light coats of spray paint; remove and paint in a clean environment, applying from multiple angles. Do not remove the scrim cloth from the back of the grille — it is not replaceable.
