NuTone XN50, XN80, XN110 — Single-Speed Ventilation Fan Installation Guide

Installation guide for the Broan-NuTone XN50, XN80, and XN110 single-speed ventilation fans (X1 series) — covering both new construction and retrofit installation for these ceiling-mount exhaust fans.

Safety Warnings

• Before servicing or cleaning, switch power off at the service panel and lock the disconnecting means, or securely tag it.
• Installation and wiring must be done by a qualified person per all applicable codes, including fire-rated construction standards.
• Sufficient air is needed for proper combustion/exhausting of fuel-burning equipment flues to prevent backdrafting — follow NFPA and ASHRAE guidelines plus local codes.
• When cutting or drilling into wall or ceiling, do not damage electrical wiring or other hidden utilities.
• Ducted fans must always be vented to the outdoors.
• Do not use this fan with any solid-state speed control device.
• Acceptable for use over a tub or shower only when connected to a GFCI-protected branch circuit.
• This unit must be grounded.

Product Cautions

• For general ventilating use only — do not exhaust hazardous or explosive materials/vapors.
• Designed for ceilings up to a 12/12 pitch (45°). Duct connector must point up. DO NOT mount this product in a wall.
• Keep drywall spray and construction dust off the power unit to avoid motor bearing damage and unbalanced impellers.
• Not for use in a cooking area — do not install above or inside the 45°/45° cooking-equipment exclusion zone shown on the product's specification label.

Typical Installation

Fits in 2" x 8" ceiling construction with joists, I-joists, or trusses. The fan position is infinitely adjustable between joists from 14" to 24" on-center. A typical run includes insulation around/over the fan housing, sealed housing gaps, round metal duct (purchase separately) sealed at joints with tape, round elbows as needed, and either a roof cap or wall cap with a built-in damper. Keep duct runs short for best performance.

New Construction Installation

Tools needed: Power screwdriver with Phillips bit, Phillips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, pliers, wire insulation stripper, wire cutter.

Materials needed: 6" round metal ducting (recommended for best performance — other ducting acceptable but may impact performance), roof cap or wall cap (built-in damper recommended), tape to seal duct connections, electrical wiring/supplies per local code.

1. Remove packaging — the Parts Bag holds the Knockout Plate and six (6) screws. Remove the instruction sheet and punch out the Mask from the packaging (needed later in Step 6).
2. Install the Mounting Frame.
3. Snap in and secure the Housing — position the housing between joists and crimp the channel on both sides of the mounting frame to lock it in place. Do not crimp the housing itself. Secure with 3 screws from the parts bag.
4. Attach the Duct Connector and ducting — top and bottom flanges go outside the housing; insert the tab into the slot inside the housing and secure with a screw from the parts bag. Tape all duct joints. A 6" to 4" reducer is provided in select models.
5. Connect wires and install the Knockout Plate — run 120VAC electrical wiring to the location, use UL-approved connectors to secure wiring to the knockout plate (mounts to the outside of the housing, orientation as desired), and connect wires per the wiring diagram below.
6. Insert the Mask and finish the ceiling — install ceiling material and cut out around the housing. The mask protects the unit during construction; remove it before installing the grille.
7. Install the Grille.

Wiring Diagram (Switch-Controlled, 120VAC Line In)

Standard connection: BLACK (line) to the ON/OFF switch and on to the fan unit's black wire; WHITE (neutral) runs straight through from line-in to the fan's white wire; GROUND (green or bare) connects straight through. The ON/OFF switch (purchase separately) is wired in the switch box between the incoming black line and the fan's black wire; the fan's red wire is unused in single-speed switch-only wiring. All connections terminate at the Knockout Plate where the 120VAC line enters.

Retrofit Installation

Additional tools needed: Ruler, pencil, drywall saw, claw hammer or pry bar, utility knife (plus the tools listed above).

Additional materials: Existing rigid duct will require adding a short length of flexible duct.

1. Remove packaging (same as new construction — punch out the Mask, noted for use in Step 12).
2. Switch off power at the service panel before removing the existing fan, and lock or tag the disconnect.
3. Enlarge the ceiling opening to 12" (30.5 cm) x 11" (27.9 cm) parallel with the joists and remove the existing fan, leaving existing ductwork and wiring in place.
4. Examine the wiring — if any damage is found, DO NOT CONTINUE. Contact a qualified person for repair.
5. Remove the Blower Assembly from both sides and set it aside.
6. Remove the Wiring Panel, setting aside its screw.
7. Insert the Mounting Frame — remove screws from the mounting frame and set aside, then bend up the four tabs.
8. Secure the Mounting Frame using the screws set aside in Step 7.
9. Snap in the Housing, pulling the existing wiring into the housing as it's inserted into the mounting frame.
10. Attach ducting and duct connector — pull existing ductwork into the housing, insert the tab into the slot inside the housing, and secure with a screw from the parts bag.
11. Install the Knockout Plate, connect wires, and install the Wiring Panel — use UL-approved connectors to secure wiring to the knockout plate (mounts to the inside of the housing this time), connect wires per the wiring diagram, and reinstall using the screw set aside in Step 6.
12. Insert and secure the Blower Assembly with 3 screws from the parts bag. If ceiling repairs are needed, place the Mask in the housing after securing the blower assembly (remove before installing the grille).
13. Install the Grille.

Operation

Use an ON/OFF switch to operate this ventilator.

Cleaning and Maintenance

For quiet, efficient operation and long life, remove the grille and vacuum the interior with a dusting brush attachment. The motor is permanently lubricated and never needs oiling. If motor bearings make excessive or unusual noise, replace the Control Assembly and Motor.

Warranty

NuTone warrants the Fan to be free from defects in materials or workmanship for three (3) years from the original purchase date (accessories such as separately-purchased speed controls are not covered). To obtain warranty service, notify NuTone within seven (7) days of discovering a defect, provide the model number and part identification, describe the defect, and present proof of original purchase date.
