    Installation and programming reference for the Napco GEM-K4RF Digital Icon Keypad with Integral RF Receiver. Compatible with NAPCO GEM-P816, GEM-P1632, GEM-P3200, and GEM-P9600 control panels. This keypad combines a full alphanumeric LCD keypad with a built-in wireless receiver, eliminating the need for a separate receiver module.

    Overview

    The GEM-K4RF is a multi-segment LCD digital keypad compatible with NAPCO GEM-Series control panels. Built inside the keypad is a receiver that accommodates up to 32 wireless points (up to 16 on some earlier panel firmware versions), eliminating the need for a separate receiver box. The receiver monitors each transmitter, tracks elapsed time since the last report, and will flag a Supervisory Failure if a transmitter doesn't check in within its programmed interval.

    Installation Overview

    Designing the System

    • Locate the keypad centrally, equidistant from all transmitters where possible — the receiver is built into the keypad, so keypad placement matters for RF reception.
    • Concrete or brick can reduce signal strength by up to 35%; steel-reinforced concrete or metal lath/plaster can reduce it by up to 90%.
    • For difficult installations with distant transmitters, consider multiple keypads and/or GEM-RECV16 receivers on the panel's 4-wire bus (uniquely addressed).
    • Keep the antenna hole separate from the bus wire hole to avoid RF noise from the bus wires affecting receiver sensitivity, and leave clearance between the antenna hole and the tamper switch.

    Keypad & Receiver Address Jumpers

    If more than one receiver is used, each must be individually addressed via jumper "RX" on the back of the keypad. Factory default (no jumper) is Receiver #1; jumpered = Receiver #2. Up to 4 receivers are supported on GEM-P9600 systems using additional GEM-RECV16 units.

    Up to 7 GEM-K4RF keypads can be connected to a panel (addresses 1–7), configured via option jumpers:

    • Jumper A — Cut to disable pushbutton backlight
    • Jumper B — Cut to disable LCD backlight
    • Jumper C — Cut to disable keypad sounder (not for UL installations)
    • Jumper D — Cut to enable keypad tamper switch

    Programming Wireless Transmitters

    Quick Method (Enrolling)

    If a receiver is already installed, transmitters can be auto-enrolled (signal strength 3 or greater required):

    1. Enter the zone number to map the transmitter to.
    2. Press B to enter Enroll Mode (red/green LEDs flash).
    3. Open the loop of the point to be programmed.
    4. Install the transmitter battery — the keypad beeps to confirm successful enrollment.

    Multi-point transmitters can map to successive zones simultaneously, or point-by-point to separate zones (see manual for worked examples with a 2-point transmitter ID 410078: both points mapped in one enroll pass vs. entering each zone separately).

    Key Fob Transmitters

    Program via the control panel: assign a Key Fob number (01–15), area, 6-digit RF ID with checksum, and Aux-1/Aux-2 options. Each of the 4 key fob buttons can also be individually mapped to a zone for multi-user wireless panic buttons that each report distinctly to the central station.

    Note: the GEM-K4RF displays signal strength only via beep count (unlike the GEM-K1CA, which can show numeric strength). For GEM-P9600/P3200 panels, use the DISPLAY RF XMITTER STAT function to view numeric signal strength (1–10) at the keypad.

    LED Indications (Back of Keypad)

    The green LED (DS2) flashes on receiving a transmission of signal strength 4+. A steady green LED with no transmitter active indicates high ambient RF interference — relocate the receiver.

    Easy Program Mode

    Enter the Dealer Security Code (default 456789), press R, press NO until function "17" (Activate Program Mode) appears, then press YES to enter Dealer Program Mode. The Easy Program Mode walks through numbered questions covering: total zones, panel zone doubling, fire zones, entry/exit zones, interior zones, number of keypads, central station phone number/account/format, user codes, RF transmitter programming, key fob transmitters, and the dealer code. Press C twice to exit and resume normal operation.

    Direct Address Program Mode is available for advanced customization beyond the Easy Menu — accessed by pressing C once from the Easy Program Mode, using 4-digit address locations referenced in the control panel's programming worksheets.

    To reset the GEM-P816 or GEM-P1632 to factory defaults: enter Direct Address mode, go to location 1198, and press U.

    Maintenance & Safety

    • Napco recommends the entire system be tested weekly.
    • As with any alarm system, this equipment reduces risk but is not a guarantee against burglary, robbery, or fire — always advise users on evacuation and calling emergency services as a first response.

    Warranty

    36-month warranty from date of manufacture against defects in materials and workmanship — repair or replacement at NAPCO's option. Does not cover units improperly installed, altered, abused, or with removed/altered serial numbers. Any breach-of-warranty claim must be brought within 6 months following the end of the warranty period.
