    Full installation instructions for the HAI (Home Automation, Inc.) RC-2000 precision digital thermostat, covering mounting, wiring for all supported HVAC system types, installer configuration settings, and troubleshooting.

    Description

    The RC-2000 is a 24 VAC thermostat supporting Single Stage Heat/Cool Conventional, Two Stage Conventional (2 Stage Heat / 2 Stage Cool), Heat Pump and Geothermal Heat Pump (2 Stage Heat / 1 Stage Cool), Two Speed Heat Pump and Geothermal Two Speed Heat Pump (3 Stage Heat / 2 Stage Cool), Dual Fuel Heat Pump and Geothermal Dual Fuel Heat Pump systems, plus humidifier/dehumidifier control. It supports local or remote control, programmability, stand-alone operation, and optically isolated communications with automation systems, utility control systems, and PCs.

    Electrical rating: 24V, 2A, 50/60Hz. Maximum current: 2A per circuit, 3A total.

    Location & Mounting

    • Mount 5 feet above the floor and at least 2 feet from an outdoor wall, with adequate air circulation.
    • Avoid direct sunlight, radiant heat from appliances, outdoor walls, fireplaces, or air duct paths.
    • Disconnect power to the control transformer before removing an existing thermostat or beginning installation.
    • Grasp the thermostat by the sides (avoiding the keys) to unsnap the base from the face. Mark and drill two mounting holes (3/16" bit), install the supplied wall anchors, feed system wires through the base opening, and secure with the supplied #6 x 1/2" screws.
    • Connect wiring per the diagram for your system type, form the cable flat between the terminal strips and base center, plug excess wiring/wall hole with the supplied insulating foam, then snap the face onto the base.

    Wiring by System Type

    Single transformer systems: keep the metal jumper between Terminal 1 (RC) and Terminal 2 (RH) in place. Separate heat/cool transformers: remove that jumper.

    • Single Stage Conventional: Terminals 1 (RC/24VAC Hot), 3 (C/Common), 6 (W1/Heat), 7 (Y1/Cool), 8 (G/Fan), 11 (H/Humidifier), 12 (D/Dehumidifier). Common wire required for heat-only/cool-only applications.
    • Single Stage for Zone Control Systems: Adds Terminal 4 (W2/Heat Mode) and Terminal 10 (Y2/Cool Mode) to control the zone panel's operating mode; set "System Type" to Zone Control.
    • Two Stage Conventional: Terminals 1, 3, 4 (W2/Heat 2), 6 (W1/Heat 1), 7 (Y1/Cool 1), 8 (G/Fan), 10 (Y2/Cool 2), 11, 12. Requires "Cool Stages"/"Heat Stages" configuration.
    • Heat Pump (2 Stage Heat/1 Stage Cool): Terminal 5 (O) energizes for cooling, Terminal 6 (B) for heating (reversing valve wiring depends on your heat pump's requirement). Terminal 7 (Y1/Compressor), Terminal 4 (W2/Aux Heat), Terminal 9 (L/Fault). Set "System Type" to Heat Pump (or Dual Fuel Heat Pump if W2 connects to the furnace's W/W1).
    • Two Speed Heat Pump (3 Stage Heat/2 Stage Cool): Adds Terminal 10 (Y2/Compressor Stage 2) to the heat pump wiring above.

    Heat pump notes: With Stage 2 called on a two-speed heat pump, both Y1 and Y2 energize (Stage 2 = high compressor speed, not auxiliary heat — configure 3 heat stages if true auxiliary/emergency heat is needed). Terminal 9 (L) indicates a compressor fault (display flashes red, "Heat Pump Fault"). The Emergency Heat Relay (E terminal) and outdoor thermostats are not used — the RC-2000 manages auxiliary heat automatically; remove any outdoor thermostat from the aux heat circuit.

    Dual fuel heat pump notes: Requires an outdoor temperature source (remote sensor or remote system) — without it, only auxiliary heat will run and "Outdoor Sensor Fault" is displayed. Balance Setpoint defaults: above 45°F the heat pump runs exclusively; between 35-45°F the heat pump runs unless it can't heat at ≥5°F/hour (then aux heat takes over); below 35°F aux heat is used exclusively. Adjustable under Installation Settings.

    Power-Up & Test Sequence

    1. Double-check wiring for stray wires/strands.
    2. Connect power — display shows current settings.
    3. Press [FAN] → "On" (fan runs), then "Auto" (fan stops).
    4. Set Mode to Heat, raise setpoint above current temp — heat should activate (for staged systems, raise further to test Stage 2/Aux Heat; use [HOLD] "On" to override Energy Efficient Control during testing).
    5. Set Mode to Cool, lower setpoint below current temp — cooling should activate (test Stage 2 similarly).
    6. Set Mode to Off to confirm heat/cool shuts off; re-enable EEC with [HOLD] "Off" when done testing.

    Communications Jumper & Remote Systems

    The factory-installed communications jumper (J8, "COMM JUMPER") must remain in place when connecting to an HAI Home Control system or remote switch, and must be removed when connecting to a PC or other serial-port device.

    • HAI Home Control System: Run 3-4 conductor wire to Ground, Zone +16, and Output 8. Multiple thermostats connect in parallel (home-run or daisy chain). On OmniLT, connect to the GRN/BLK/YEL "TSTAT" terminals.
    • Remote Setback Switch: 2-conductor wire to the Black/Green "Comm" terminals; 0VDC = Occupancy Day setpoints, 5-15VDC = Occupancy Night setpoints. Requires "Program Options" set to "Occupancy".
    • Remote Temperature Sensor: Twisted-pair shielded cable to the Green/Black "Remote Temp Sensor" terminals (max 250 ft; use polypropylene-insulated cable for 100-150 ft runs, foam-polyethylene for 150-250 ft). Tie shield and one conductor together at the Black terminal.
    • Disable Local Control: Remove the thermostat face and pull the local control jumper to disable the Task Buttons and Scroll Wheel.

    Installer Setup (Installation Settings Menu)

    Access via Scroll Wheel → Setup → Installation Settings → Continue. Auto-exits to Home Page after 3 minutes idle.

    • Thermostat Address: 1-127 (default 1) — must be unique per thermostat on a shared remote comm bus.
    • Communications Mode: Serial (RS-232, default) or Day/Night (remote setback switch). Baud rates 100/300/1200/2400/9600.
    • System Type: Conventional (default), Zone Control, Heat Pump, Dual Fuel Heat Pump, Geothermal Heat Pump, Geothermal Dual Fuel Heat Pump.
    • System Mode: Auto Changeover (default), Manual Changeover, Heat Only, Cool Only.
    • Program Mode: Schedule (default, time/day-based), None (disable internal schedule, for remote-controlled systems), Occupancy (Day/Night/Away/Vacation status-based, requires remote system/switch).
    • Calibration Offset: ±0.5°F / 0.25°C adjustment to the onboard sensor reading (default 0.00).
    • Cool/Heat Limits: Cool Setpoint Min default 51°F; Heat Setpoint Max default 91°F.
    • Cool/Heat Min On/Off: Minimum run/rest times in minutes (default 6 min each) — cycles/hour = 60 / (Min On + Min Off).
    • Stage Settings: Cool Stages and Heat Stages (default 1 each; aux heat counts toward heat stages on heat pumps).
    • EEC (Energy Efficient Control): Default 5 (0 disables EEC, maintaining ±0.5°F; 2-3 for slow-reacting sources like radiant heat, 7-8 for fast-reacting like forced air). Also configures 2nd Stage Differential, Auxiliary Heat Differential, and Start Delay depending on system type.
    • Anticipator Control: Heat Anticipator and Cool Anticipator (default 5 = automatic; 0-4 for fast systems/humid climates, 6-10 for slow systems/dry climates). 2nd/3rd Stage Extended On (default Off) keeps a triggered stage on until satisfied.
    • Temperature Sensors: Internal Sensor (default Enabled), External Sensors 1-3 (default Disabled) — same-type sensors (indoor/outdoor) are averaged.
    • Humidity Options: Dehumidifier output = Not Used (default) / Dehumidifier / Fan Speed Control / EM Heat. Humidifier output = Not Used (default) / Humidifier / EM Heat.
    • Emergency Heat Options: Reconfigure the H or D terminal to activate during Emergency Heat mode (default None).
    • Factory Default: Restores all settings and programming to factory configuration.

    Note: Time and Date must be manually set under the thermostat's "Settings" menu even when an HAI controller is present.

    Troubleshooting

    Symptom Action
    Thermostat dead Check power to the thermostat; check wiring diagrams.
    Heat or cool inoperative Check for a break in the W or Y wire; allow minimum off time to pass; check System Options settings; wait if the arrow is blinking (startup delay); confirm Mode isn't Off; check for a remote system override.
    Control by remote system not working Check wiring at the "Comm" terminals; verify thermostat address and communications mode; check the remote system's setup.
    Temperature reading incorrect Allow 30 minutes to stabilize after install; adjust Calibration Offset; check °F/°C display setting.
    Display problem Cycle power to the thermostat.
    Aux heat on too often Heat pump may not be able to meet the load in cold weather; check if the thermostat is stuck in EM Heat mode (set to Heat or Auto instead).
    Heat pump heats in cool mode / cools in heat mode Reversing valve wire is on the wrong terminal — swap between B and O.

    Warranty

    HAI warrants this product against defects in material and workmanship for two (2) years from date of purchase; HAI will repair or replace at its option. Does not cover removal/reinstallation cost, normal wear, damage while in the customer's possession (other than defect-caused), improper installation, alteration, misuse, or abuse.
