  • M&S Systems DMC1 — Finish-Out Installation Instructions

    September 08, 2026 4 min read

Finish-out installation instructions for the M&S Systems DMC1 Music/Communications System — Room, Patio, and Door Station wiring, chime module, and optional DMCBT Bluetooth Player setup.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Finish-out installation instructions for the M&S Systems / Nortek DMC1 Music/Communications System, covering Room Station, Patio Station, Door Station, chime module, satellite volume control, and DMCBT Bluetooth® Player installation and wiring. Rough-in wiring must already be complete before starting these steps.

    Critical Safety Warnings

    • An outdoor antenna should be located away from power lines and properly grounded per NEC Section 810 to protect against voltage surges.
    • Replace fuses in the Master Station or Bluetooth Player unit ONLY with the same type and rating: 3 Amp Slo-blo fuses.
    • Do NOT use the appliance near water, or place it where ventilation is blocked.
    • Never push objects into the product through openings — this may touch dangerous voltage points or cause a fire/shock hazard.
    • Servicing beyond what's in the manual should be referred to qualified service personnel — required if the power cord/plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled inside, or the unit has been dropped/exposed to rain.

    Do's and Don'ts

    • DO use only M&S Systems brand cable (except Cat-5 & RG-6) as specified.
    • DO make gradual bends of cable — no sharper than 1" radius — and dress cables neatly with cable ties or Velcro (loose/moderate pressure).
    • DO limit pulling tension to 25 lbs or less per EIA/TIA-568A standard.
    • DO test every installed cable run with a cable tester — toning alone is not acceptable.
    • DO label every termination point with a unique identifier.
    • DO NOT locate the DMC1 Master Station or Room Stations in an exterior wall or a wall cavity with other electrical wiring.
    • DO NOT power up the Master Station until all speakers and stations are connected.
    • DO NOT splice or repair damaged cables — install a new cable instead.
    • DO NOT install any satellite speakers other than 45-ohm impedance — this will damage the amplifier.
    • DO NOT connect un-terminated cables (no station attached) to the Master Station — this can cause electronic feedback that damages the unit.

    Wiring Requirements

    • A licensed electrician must run a dedicated 15-amp 120 VAC circuit to the DMC1 (and DMCBT, if equipped) transformer.
    • Use Cat-5 wire for all DMC1 wire runs except Door Stations, which use M&S Systems MS4DCXSC wire (included with wall housing kits).
    • Individual wire runs: max 350 feet per station; max 1,000 feet total for the entire system.
    • Run cable "home run" style — one cable per station directly to the Master Station. Do not loop cable between stations.
    • Keep signal cables at least 18" from fluorescent lights, dimmers, AC wiring, and other control wiring to avoid hum/buzz.
    • The Master Station supports up to 15 devices total (room stations, patio stations, or 45-ohm music speakers, in any combination).

    Room Station Cautions

    • Do not install near air return ducts, in exterior walls, in saunas, under cabinets/countertops, or in stud cavities with other wiring.
    • Keep Room Stations at least 10 feet from other Room Stations or the Master Station to avoid acoustical feedback — do not face them toward each other.

    Installation Steps

    1. Room Station: Strip 4" of Cat-5 jacket, 1/2" insulation from each wire, connect colored wires to screw terminals, mount to wall ring with the two provided screws.
    2. Patio Station: Wire-nut connections — Orange to Orange, Blue to Blue, Orange/White to Orange/White, Green/White to Green/White, Green+Brown/White to Green, Brown+Blue/White to Brown.
    3. Door Station: Cut off the cable's drain/shield wire at the sheath. If equipped with a bell button, connect Yellow and Orange to the button terminals. Wire-nut Red-to-Red and Black-to-Black speaker leads.
    4. Satellite Volume Control (MVC1): Any speaker connected must be 45 ohms — 8-ohm speakers will damage the Master Station. Wire-nut the ground (Shield + Red + Brown/White-Blue), audio signal (Green + White/Brown), speaker− (Blue-to-Blue), and speaker+ (Violet-to-Violet) connections.
    5. External Music Source: Wire an audio input wall plate's RCA jacks to the pre-routed left/right audio cables, then attach the plate to the J-box.
    6. Optional Chime Module (MC3/MC8): Snaps onto four standoffs inside the wall housing; connects to the CHIME connector on the DMC1 board.
    7. Master Station mounting: Turn off the circuit breaker first. Suspend the unit from the wall housing hook using the green "third hand" wire, plug into the TE5D transformer connector, then secure with the two long screws (do not overtighten — the frame can crack).
    8. Station connections to Master: Plug each numbered Cat-5 quick connector into its matching ROOM 1-9 / PATIO socket. Rooms 5-9 support two shared stations per switch.
    9. Door Station wiring to Master: Black wire to DOOR BLACK terminal, Red wire to DOOR RED terminal, Orange to chime COMMON, Yellow to a chime NOTE terminal (only one), shield wire (insulated) to SHIELDS terminal.
    10. Antenna connections: AM lead (with ferrite filter) to the AM ANTENNA terminal; FM coax (Type F connector) to the FM ANTENNA connector.
    11. Door Release: Wire-nut one transformer wire to one door strike wire; connect the remaining wires to the DOOR RELEASE terminals (rated 2A @ 24VAC/DC).
    12. DMCBT Bluetooth Player (optional): Mounts in the DMC1HC combination housing alongside the Master Station, using the DMC1F mounting frame. Connect audio cables (Black=Left, Red=Right) between the player and Master Station CD L/CD R jacks, connect the two keyed ribbon cables to the faceplate board, then snap on the faceplate.

    Powering Up

After all connections are made and both units are seated in the wall housing, turn the circuit breaker back on and check all system functions per the Owner's Manual. If issues occur, recheck all connections before calling technical support.
