Instruction guide for the LifeSource UA-851THW Wireless Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with ActiLink wireless data transfer.
Instruction guide for the LifeSource UA-851THW Wireless Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor — an oscillometric monitor with wireless data transfer to the Wellness Connected software/ActiHealth online service via an ActiLink USB Transceiver.
Front: Display, START button.
Back: Air Connector Plug / Air Socket, Battery Compartment with Battery Cover, AC Adapter Jack, Serial No. Label.
Included accessory: ActiLink USB Transceiver (with its own Serial No. Label) for wireless data transfer to your computer.
Arm Cuff with Air Hose connects to the Air Socket.
If you already use another Wellness Connected device, skip this and simply add the UA-851THW in the Devices tab of your account.
Note: Rechargeable batteries will not work with this monitor. The optional AC Adapter can be used instead (see below).
Using the correct cuff size is critical for accuracy. A cuff too large produces a lower-than-actual reading; a cuff too small produces a higher-than-actual reading. Measure your upper-arm circumference at the midpoint between shoulder and elbow, arm hanging at your side.
| Arm Size | Recommended Cuff Size | Replacement Cuff Model # |
|---|---|---|
| 9.4"–14.2" (24–36cm) | Medium Cuff | UA-280 |
| 14.2"–17.7" (36–45cm) | Large Cuff | UA-281 |
Note: The LifeSource small cuff is NOT compatible with the UA-851THW. The cuff has an Index Mark / Proper Fit Range indicator to confirm you're using the correct size — if it falls outside the range, contact A&D Medical at 1-888-726-9966 (Canada: Auto Control Medical, 1-800-461-0991) for a replacement. If it falls on a borderline, pick either size but stay consistent across measurements.
Insert the Air Connector Plug of the cuff firmly into the Air Socket on the monitor. Be careful to distinguish the Air Socket from the AC Adapter Jack — the plug will only securely fit the correct jack.
Important: Measure at the same time each day. The ActiLink Transceiver will not work if the connected computer is in sleep/suspend/hibernation mode. Range may be affected by walls and other environmental factors.
Uses the oscillometric method — a noninvasive technique that measures arterial pulse vibrations against the cuff. The cuff inflates until the artery is fully blocked; inflation speed and pressure are optimized automatically, and measurements are taken during both inflation and deflation for a faster, more comfortable reading.
Shown on the left side of the display; the indicator moves up during inflation and down during deflation/measurement.
The monitor still provides a reading even with an irregular heartbeat, flagging it with an Irregular Heartbeat symbol when a heartbeat varies by 25% or more from the average interval during measurement. Relax, stay still, and avoid talking during measurement; contact your physician if this symbol appears frequently.
Displays a segment corresponding to the JNC7 blood pressure classification (see table below) based on the current measurement, giving a quick snapshot of where your reading falls. Note this is approximate — other risk factors (diabetes, obesity, smoking, etc.) should be considered by your physician.
Use only the optional LifeSource AC adapter to avoid damaging the monitor (contact LifeSource Health Line at 1-888-726-9966 to purchase).
Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against artery walls — systolic when the heart contracts, diastolic when it expands, measured in mmHg. It's affected by age, weight, time of day, activity, climate, altitude, season, caffeine/alcohol, medications, emotional stress, and even tight clothing. Blood pressure normally rises during activity and falls to its lowest during sleep.
| BP Classification | Systolic (mmHg) | Diastolic (mmHg) |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | < 120 | and < 80 |
| Prehypertension | 120–139 | or 80–89 |
| Stage 1 Hypertension | 140–159 | or 90–99 |
| Stage 2 Hypertension | ≥ 160 | or ≥ 100 |

Readings taken at a doctor's office can be elevated due to apprehension/anxiety ("white coat hypertension"). Home self-measurement supplements clinical readings and provides a more complete blood pressure history — clinical studies show detection/treatment of hypertension improves when patients both consult physicians and monitor at home. Differences between home and clinic readings can also stem from different cuff sizes used.
Devote two weeks to consistent measurement conditions (same time, location, chair, cuff) to build a baseline you can compare future readings against — useful for evaluating the effect of lifestyle changes or medication.
| Problem | Probable Cause | Corrective Action |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears on display after pressing START | Batteries drained, or terminals not positioned correctly | Replace all batteries (alkaline recommended); check terminal polarity matches compartment markings |
| Cuff does not inflate | Battery voltage too low | Replace all batteries with new ones |
| Unit doesn't measure; readings too high or too low | Cuff not fastened properly; arm/body moved; incorrect cuff position or size | Fasten cuff correctly; remain still; sit with cuff at heart level; check correct cuff size |
| Reading differs from clinic/doctor's office | Different cuff size used by clinician; white-coat hypertension | See notes on cuff sizing and home vs. clinic measurement above |
| ActiLink/computer software not receiving new measurements | Computer/ActiLink not connected or in range | Confirm computer is on and ActiLink is plugged in; move the monitor closer with clear line-of-sight; replace batteries |
If these steps don't resolve the issue, call 1-888-726-9966. Do not attempt to repair the device yourself.
