Installation instructions for the Leviton Vizia RF+™ VRCZ4-MR 4-Zone Controller with Switch (Single Pole) — a Z-Wave enabled controller that manages up to 4 lighting zones from one location.

    Overview

Vizia RF+ components communicate via Radio Frequency (RF) as Z-Wave enabled routers, re-transmitting signals from device to device until the intended target is reached. This 4-Zone Controller is designed for zone-enabled Z-Wave products. For mixed device groups that don't support the zone command class, use the Leviton 4-Scene Controller (VRCS4) instead.

    Key Features

    • Switch ON/OFF with zone capability — controls up to 4 zones without traveler wires
    • Two-way Z-Wave communication with ON/OFF LED status
    • Interchangeable color rocker/frame kits (White included; Mahogany, Ivory, Gray, Almond, Black available)

    Warnings

    • Disconnect power at the circuit breaker or fuse before servicing, installing, or removing the fixture.
    • Maximum wire length from dimmer to all installed remotes: 300 ft (90 m).
    • Use only with copper or copper-clad wire.
    • Recommended minimum wall box depth: 2-1/2".

    Installation Steps

    1. Turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse; test that power is off before wiring.
    2. Identify your wiring application — if it doesn't match the standard 4-wire configuration (Line, Neutral, Ground, Load), consult a qualified electrician.
    3. Prepare and connect wires via side wire terminals or backwire openings. Strip gauge: 5/8" (1.6 cm).
      • Green/bare copper → Green terminal screw
      • Line Hot → terminal marked "BK"
      • Line Neutral → terminal marked "WH"
      • Load → terminal marked "RD"
    4. Test the device before mounting: position wires with slack, ensure "TOP" faces up, partially screw in mounting screws, restore power. LED should turn on; toggle button 1 to test local load operation.
    5. Mount the device by tightening the mounting screws into the wall box, then attach the wallplate.
    6. Restore power at the circuit breaker/fuse — installation is complete.

Including / Excluding from the Z-Wave Network

    • Include controller: Using a Leviton Programmer/Remote (VRCPG), navigate Menu → System Setup → Advanced Settings → Network → Include Node, then stand within 1 ft of the controller.
    • Include local switch: Remain in Advanced Settings, select Include Node again while standing near the VRCZ4.
    • Exclude: Navigate to Advanced Install → Exclude Node, then stand near the controller/switch and confirm.
    • Manual programming mode (non-Leviton remote): Press and hold buttons 1 and 3 for 5 seconds until the LED turns Amber and blinks — you are now in Programming mode. For exclusion, use buttons 2 and 4 instead.
    • Only one device may be included at a time. A solid Red LED during inclusion/exclusion indicates a communication error.
    • 4-Zone controllers must be updated (via Update Controller) after all other network devices have been included.

    Zone Programming & Association

    • After inclusion, you must associate Vizia RF light switches to buttons on the controller (via your Primary Programmer/Remote). By default, the local switch is associated to Button 1.
    • One Z-Wave light switch can be associated to up to 5 controllers.
    • To set a zone: Press and hold the desired zone button until the LED blinks Green, adjust any associated loads to the desired level, then press the button again — the LED stops blinking and the zone is set.

    Operation

    • Turn zone ON: Press — Zone LED turns ON (blinks until zone target is reached).
    • Turn zone OFF: Press — all lights in zone turn OFF, LED turns OFF.
    • Dim/Bright: Left side of button dims, right side brightens the last activated zone (only works within direct RF range).

    Factory Reset

Press and hold buttons 1 and 3 for ~10 seconds until the LED turns Amber then solid Red, blinking red twice — release to complete the reset. Caution: factory reset does NOT exclude the device from the network — the exclusion procedure must still be performed at the controller, or the network may become slow to respond.

    Troubleshooting

    Symptom Possible Cause
Lights flickering Bad lamp connection, or wires not secured firmly under terminal screws.
Light doesn't turn on Tripped breaker/fuse, burned-out lamp, or unwired lamp neutral.
Locator LED doesn't light Tripped breaker/fuse; check wiring if powered but LED is off.
Zone controller doesn't operate lights Check association; verify controller was updated properly; re-program zone.
LED turns solid Red Check association; ensure each device is within 70 ft (21m) of another device.
