Leviton Vizia RF+ Scene Capable Switch VRS15-1L — Installation Instructions

Overview

Installation instructions for the Leviton Vizia RF+™ Scene Capable Electronic Switch (Cat. No. VRS15-1L, Lighted) — a Z-Wave®-enabled single-pole (one location) or 3-way (multi-location) switch rated 120VAC, 60Hz. Handles incandescent (1800W), magnetic low-voltage (1800VA/1440W), electronic low-voltage (1800W), fluorescent (1800VA), and supplemental motor loads (1/2 HP).

How It Works

Leviton's Vizia RF+™ Z-Wave® components communicate via radio frequency to provide remote lighting control. Each device in the Vizia RF+™ line acts as a Z-Wave® router, re-transmitting the RF signal from device to device until it reaches its destination — routing around obstacles and dead spots for reliable delivery. This switch is compatible with any Z-Wave®-enabled network regardless of manufacturer.

⚠ Warnings & Cautions

• Install and use in accordance with applicable electrical codes; consult a qualified electrician if unsure.
• Vizia RF+™ switches are not compatible with standard 3-way or 4-way switches — use only with compatible Vizia+™ or Vizia RF+™ controllers.
• Use only one Vizia RF+™ Scene Capable Switch per multi-location circuit, with up to 9 coordinating remotes (no LEDs) or up to 4 matching remotes (with LEDs).
• Maximum wire length from switch to all installed remotes: 300 ft (90 m).
• Disconnect power at the breaker/fuse when servicing, installing, or removing the fixture.
• Use only with copper or copper-clad wire (aluminum wire requires devices marked CO/ALR or CU/AL). Minimum wall box depth: 2-1/2 in.
• Not for high-power heating appliances — e.g. don't remotely switch an empty coffee pot or a heater with clothing draped over it. Not for electronic low-voltage/high-frequency transformers or HID lighting (mercury-vapor, sodium vapor, metal halide).

Wiring Instructions

WARNING: TO AVOID FIRE, SHOCK, OR DEATH, turn OFF power at the circuit breaker or fuse and test that power is off before wiring. Side wire terminals accept #14 AWG solid copper wire; back wire openings accept #14–12 AWG solid copper wire.

Single-Pole Wiring

• Terminal 1: Line (Hot) → "BK"; Terminal 2: Neutral → "WH"; Terminal 3: Ground; Terminal 4: Load → "RD".
• Leave the red insulating label on "YL/RD" in place for single-pole installs; proceed to testing.

3-Way Wiring (Coordinating Remote, no LED)

• Tag the old switch's Common wire before removing it — identifies the Line/Load common in both boxes.
• Switch: Green/bare copper → Green terminal; Line Hot → "BK"; Load → "RD"; Line Neutral → "WH"; remove Red label from "YL/RD" and connect the Second Traveler.
• Remote ("BK"/"RD" unused): Green/bare copper → Green terminal; First Traveler → "RD"; Second Traveler → "YL/RD" (must match switch); Line Neutral → "WH".

3-Way Wiring (Matching Remote, with LED)

• Switch needs a wall box with a Load connection; matching remote needs a wall box with Line Hot + Neutral (add a neutral wire if not present).
• Switch: Green/bare copper → Green terminal; Load (tagged) → "RD"; First Traveler Line Hot → "BK"; remove Red label from "YL/RD" and connect Second Traveler.
• Remote: Green/bare copper → Green terminal; Line Hot (common, tagged) + First Traveler → "BK"; Second Traveler → "YL/RD" (matches switch); Line Neutral → "WH".

Testing, Mounting & Restoring Power

1. Position wires to leave room in the box; confirm "TOP" faces up on the device strap; partially screw in mounting screws.
2. Restore power and press the push pad until the locator light is OFF — lights should turn ON (if not, see Troubleshooting).
3. Turn power OFF at the breaker, dress wires to relieve mounting stress, complete mounting, attach the wallplate, then restore power — installation complete.

Adding to a Z-Wave® Network

Including the Switch

1. Using a Leviton Z-Wave® Programmer/Controller (Cat. No. VRCPG): press Menu → System Setup → Advanced Settings → Network → select <Include> device (non-Leviton controllers: follow that controller's instructions).
2. Standing within ~1 ft of the switch while the controller is in Inclusion mode, press the push pad to turn the switch ON. The controller verifies inclusion and the Locator LED turns OFF.
3. If the switch flashes Amber during inclusion, the controller is still trying to communicate — wait until it stops flashing, then press the push pad again. Only include one device at a time.
4. The controller assigns a node ID (name) to the device, which can be renamed/edited at that time. The switch is now on the network.
5. Note: re-Including a device that's already on the network without first Excluding it will simply have the switch retain its original node ID.

Excluding the Switch

Always Exclude a device properly when moving or removing it from a Z-Wave® network, so its entry is cleanly removed from the controller's information table.

1. Using the VRCPG: Menu → System Setup → Advanced Settings → Network → select <Exclude> device.
2. While the controller is in Exclusion mode and the switch's Locator LED is ON, press the push pad — the controller verifies exclusion and the LED turns OFF.

Factory Default Reset

Caution: resetting a device to factory default does NOT exclude it from a network — the Exclusion procedure must still be followed, or the network may become slow to respond or fail to respond to some devices.

1. Engage the air-gap switch by gently pressing the top of the push pad until the bottom lifts completely out of the frame (a click is heard).
2. Wait 5 seconds, then press the push pad back into the frame and hold until the Locator LED turns Amber, then flashes Red.
3. The switch is now reset and must be re-Included into a network before use.

Operation

The Locator LED illuminates when the load is OFF, for easy access in the dark.

• Turn ON from OFF: Tap the push pad. Turn OFF from ON: Tap the push pad.
• After a power outage, lights return to their last setting before the interruption.
• Cleaning: Damp cloth only — no chemical cleaners.

Advanced Programming

LED Option: Sets the Locator LED timeout to 5 seconds after use. Press and hold the push pad for 10 seconds until the Locator LED begins to blink to enter programming mode; the LED option toggles automatically on release.

Troubleshooting

• Lights flickering: Bad lamp connection, or wires not secured firmly under switch/remote terminal screws.
• Light doesn't turn ON, Locator LED doesn't turn ON: Tripped breaker/fuse, burned-out lamp, or unwired lamp neutral connection.
• Remote doesn't operate lights: Confirm total wire length doesn't exceed 300 ft (90 m).

FCC Compliance

Tested and complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules for a Class B Digital Device, providing reasonable protection against harmful interference in residential installations. If interference occurs, try reorienting the antenna, increasing separation between equipment and receiver, using a different circuit, or consulting a qualified radio/TV technician.

Limited 5-Year Warranty

Leviton warrants to the original consumer purchaser that this product is free of defects in materials and workmanship under normal, proper use for five years from the purchase date. Leviton's only obligation is to repair or replace the product (at its option) if returned prepaid within the warranty period, with proof of purchase and a description of the problem, to Leviton Manufacturing Co., Inc., Attn: Quality Assurance Department, 59-25 Little Neck Parkway, Little Neck, New York 11362-2591.
