Leviton vizia+ Electronic Switch VPS15-1L — Installation Instructions

Overview

Installation instructions for the Leviton vizia+™ Electronic Switch (Cat. No. VPS15-1L, Lighted) — a single-pole (one location) or 3-way (multi-location) electronic switch rated for 120VAC, 60Hz. Handles incandescent (1800W), magnetic low-voltage (1800VA/1440W), electronic low-voltage (1800W), fluorescent (1800VA), and supplemental motor loads (1/2 HP).

⚠ Warnings & Cautions

• Install and use in accordance with applicable electrical codes and regulations; consult a qualified electrician if unsure about any part of these instructions.
• vizia+™ electronic switches are not compatible with standard 3-way or 4-way switches. They must be used with compatible vizia+™ on/off remotes.
• Use only one vizia+™ electronic switch per multi-location circuit, with up to 9 coordinating remotes (no LEDs) or up to 4 matching remotes (with LEDs).
• Maximum wire length from the switch to all installed remotes: 300 ft (90 m).
• Disconnect power at the circuit breaker or fuse before servicing, installing, or removing the fixture.
• Use only with copper or copper-clad wire. With aluminum wire, use only devices marked CO/ALR or CU/AL.
• Recommended minimum wall box depth: 2-1/2 in.

What You Need

• Slotted/Phillips screwdriver, electrical tape, pliers, pencil, wire cutters, ruler
• Side wire terminals accept #14 AWG solid copper wire only; back wire openings accept #14–12 AWG solid copper wire only

Wiring Instructions

WARNING: TO AVOID FIRE, SHOCK, OR DEATH, turn OFF power at the circuit breaker or fuse and test that power is off before wiring.

Single-Pole Wiring

• Terminal 1: Line (Hot) — screw marked "BK"
• Terminal 2: Neutral — screw marked "WH"
• Terminal 3: Ground
• Terminal 4: Load — screw marked "RD"
• Leave the red insulating label on the "YL/RD" terminal in place for single-pole applications; proceed to testing (Step 5 below).

3-Way Wiring (with a Coordinating Remote, no LED)

• Identify and tag the old switch's Common wire (usually a different color, e.g. black, or labeled Common) before removing it — it becomes the Line or Load common in both the switch and remote wall boxes.
• Switch side: Green/bare copper → Green terminal; Line Hot → "BK"; Load → "RD"; Line Neutral → "WH"; remove the Red insulating label from "YL/RD" and connect the Second Traveler there.
• Remote side ("BK" and "RD" terminals unused on the coordinating remote): Green/bare copper → Green terminal; First Traveler → "RD"; Second Traveler → "YL/RD" (must match the switch's "YL/RD" traveler); Line Neutral → "WH".
• Maximum wire length from switch to last remote: 300 ft (90 m).

3-Way Wiring (with a Matching Remote, with LED)

• Switch must be in a wall box with a Load connection; matching remote must be in a wall box with a Line Hot and Neutral connection (add a neutral wire to the remote box if needed).
• Switch side: Green/bare copper → Green terminal; Load (tagged when removing old switch) → "RD"; First Traveler Line Hot → "BK"; remove Red label from "YL/RD" and connect Second Traveler there.
• Remote side: Green/bare copper → Green terminal; Line Hot (common, tagged) + First Traveler → "BK"; Second Traveler → "YL/RD" (matches switch); Line Neutral → "WH".

Testing & Mounting

1. Position all wires to leave room in the outlet box for the device; make sure "TOP" faces up on the device strap.
2. Partially screw in mounting screws, then restore power at the breaker/fuse.
3. Press the push pad until the locator light turns OFF — lights should turn ON. If they don't, see Troubleshooting.
4. Turn power OFF again at the breaker, dress wires with a bend to relieve mounting stress, complete mounting, and attach the wallplate.
5. Restore power at the breaker — installation complete.

Operation

The locator light illuminates when the load is OFF, for easy access in the dark.

• Turn ON from OFF: Tap the push pad — lights turn ON.
• Turn OFF from ON: Tap the push pad — lights turn OFF.
• After a power outage, lights return to their last setting before the interruption.
• Cleaning: Clean with a damp cloth only — do not use chemical cleaners.

Advanced Programming

LED Option: Sets the Locator LED timeout to 5 seconds after use. To enter programming mode, press and hold the push pad for 10 seconds until the Locator LED begins to blink; releasing the pad automatically toggles the LED option. The switch exits programming mode after 3 minutes of inactivity.

Changing the Faceplate Color

Your device may include color options. Push in the sides at the tab to release the existing face; line up tabs and press in the sides one at a time to attach the new color face.

Troubleshooting

• Lights flickering: Check for a bad lamp connection, or wires not secured firmly under the switch/remote terminal screws.
• Light doesn't turn ON and Locator LED doesn't turn ON: Check for a tripped circuit breaker/fuse, a burned-out lamp, or an unwired lamp neutral connection.
• Remote doesn't operate lights: Confirm total wire length doesn't exceed 300 ft (90 m).

If interference to radio/TV reception occurs, try reorienting the receiving antenna, increasing separation between the equipment and receiver, connecting the equipment to a different circuit, or consulting a qualified radio/TV technician.

Limited 5-Year Warranty

Leviton warrants to the original consumer purchaser that this product is free of defects in materials and workmanship under normal, proper use for five years from the purchase date.
