    Overview

    Wiring standards reference sheet from Leviton's Voice & Data Division, covering safety information for telephone/data wiring plus jack pin designations and color-code standards for common modular jack types (8P8C, 6P6C, MMJ) used in structured cabling and patch cable installations.

    ⚠ Warning

    Hazard of electric shock. Not intended for installation on powered wire or circuits. Ringing voltage on telephone lines can exceed 100 volts AC — use extreme caution to avoid physical contact with bare conductors or terminals. If you wear an electronic heart-regulation device, never attempt repair, installation, or modification of low-voltage equipment or wiring. If you're unfamiliar with low-voltage wiring, consult a qualified technician. Refer to the specific product's instruction sheet for more detail.

    Safety Information

    • Read and understand all instructions; follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product.
    • Never install telephone or data wiring/jacks during lightning storms.
    • Never install telephone or data jacks in wet locations unless specifically designed for wet-location use (e.g. near a tub, sink, laundry tub, wet basement, or pool).
    • Never touch un-insulated telephone/data wires or terminals unless the line has been disconnected at the network interface.
    • Never push objects of any kind into cabinet slots — they may contact dangerous voltages.
    • To prevent electrical shock, every opening must be filled with a module.
    • Use caution when installing or modifying communications wiring or components.

    Jack Pin Number Designations

    Pin numbering runs 1 through 8 (or fewer, depending on jack type), viewed from the front of the jack. "T" = Tip, "R" = Ring (per-pair transmit/receive conductors). ISDN-specific pin functions: R/T = Receive/Transmit, T/R = Transmit/Receive, PS2/PS3 = Power Source/Sink 2 and 3.

    Note: On some cables, wires for jack pins 2, 4, 6, and 8 may have a white stripe added — this is electrically equivalent to a solid-color wire on the same pin number.

    Standard 4-Pair Wiring Color Codes

    Pair 2 White/Orange Orange
    Pair 3 White/Green Green
    Pair 4 White/Brown Brown

    For 6-wire jacks, use Pair 1, 2, and 3 color codes. For 4-wire jacks, use Pair 1 and 2 color codes only.

    Common Jack Wiring Formats

    Standard wiring types shown on the reference sheet include: USOC 8, USOC 6, T568A (AT&T 258A), T568B (4-wire Ethernet), 10BASE-T (4-wire Ethernet), and 8P8C (ISDN).
