Overview

The Leviton ODS15-IDx Designer Wall Switch Occupancy Sensor is a single-pole (single or multi-location) sensor that detects motion from heat-emitting sources and automatically switches lights ON and OFF. It uses a small semiconductor heat detector behind a multi-zone Fresnel lens, covering up to 2,400 sq. ft. of monitored space, and adapts its time delay and ambient light settings to the occupancy patterns of the room. UL listed, CSA certified, and conforms to California Title 24 requirements.

Installation

Warnings: Install and use only in accordance with appropriate electrical codes and regulations. If unsure about any part of these instructions, consult a qualified electrician. Controlling a load in excess of the specified ratings will damage the unit and pose a risk of fire, electric shock, personal injury, or death. Do not install this unit to control a receptacle.

1. Turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse, and test that power is off before wiring.
2. Connect wires per the wiring diagram: BLACK lead to LINE, BLUE lead to LOAD, GREEN lead to GROUND. Twist strands of each lead tightly and push firmly into the appropriate wire connector; screw the connector on clockwise, ensuring no bare wire shows. Secure each connector with electrical tape.
3. Ensure the Service Switch is in the AUTO (middle) position — the unit must begin operation in AUTO mode.
4. Carefully position the wires into the wall box, then mount the sensor unit into the wall box.
5. Secure the device using the long mounting screws provided.
6. Restore power at the circuit breaker or fuse. The unit will beep once 5 seconds after power is applied; allow about 1 minute for charge-up, after which the lights will turn ON. If the lights turn ON and the LED blinks when a hand is waved in front of the lens, the sensor was installed properly.
7. Attach the Control Panel cover and a Decora wallplate (not included). Installation is complete.

Other cautions: Disconnect power when servicing the fixture or changing bulbs. Use copper or copper-clad wire only (with aluminum wire, use devices marked CO/ALR or CU/AL only). Do not touch the surface of the lens — clean the outer surface with a damp cloth only. This device requires a ground connection to operate; if there is no ground wire, ensure the electrical box itself is grounded.

Placement guidance: The sensor is most effective sensing motion across its field of view, and less effective sensing motion toward or away from it — factor this into placement. Avoid mounting near climate-control sources (radiators, air exchanges, air conditioners) — hot/cold drafts can trigger false detection; keep at least 6 ft away. Avoid mounting directly under large light sources (bulbs over 100W incandescent generate heat that can be detected as false motion) — keep at least 6 ft away, or use a lower-wattage bulb if closer mounting is required.

Factory Settings

The sensor ships ready to work in most situations with no adjustment needed. Factory defaults: blinders open, base time-out 10 minutes, lights always turn ON regardless of existing light levels, and maximum detection range.

Programming Features

Blinders

Two independent shutters narrow the field of view from a maximum of 180° down to 32°, operated by moving the blinder levers toward or away from the sensor's center.

Time-Outs

• Walk-through Time-Out: Preset to 2.5 minutes; used as a starting point for adapting the other time-outs. If a person leaves the room before this window elapses, the sensor turns lights OFF quickly; if they stay longer, the sensor switches to the Time Control Setting value instead. May be disabled via Non-Adapting Mode.
• Base Time-Out: User-selected via the Time Control dial.
• Adapting Time-Out: Automatically adjusted by the sensor based on observed room occupancy and lighting conditions.

Time Control Setting (Adapting Mode)

Time durations are approximate within ±10 seconds. Each rotation to a new mark produces one beep confirming the selection.

Non-Adapting Mode (Fixed Time-Out)

Rotate the Light dial fully counter-clockwise, then adjust the Time dial (double-beep confirms each new value):

Return the Light dial to its previous setting when done. To return to adapting mode, rotate the Time dial to a new setting while the Light dial is anywhere except the full CCW position.

Ambient Light Override

Keeps lights OFF if there is already enough natural light. Adjustment must be made when there is enough natural light present (see Settings below); adjusting during low light can cause lights to fail to turn on when actually needed. Turning the Light Dial fully CCW sets Manual-ON mode (lights always turn on). Other settings turn lights on only when ambient light drops below the selected level.

Detection Range

Adjustable from 100% down to 36% by rotating the range knob CCW.

Settings Procedure

1. Remove the control panel cover.
2. Remove the warning label covering the adjustment dials.
3. Rotate the Time dial to the desired base time-out value.
4. If installed within 6 feet of an air duct, rotate the Range Control 1/4 turn CCW; otherwise leave at maximum.
5. Set the Ambient Light Level: with lights ON, press the push-button to turn lights OFF, then slowly rotate the light knob until the unit beeps (sets the light level to match the current room condition), then press the push-button again to turn lights back ON.
6. Attach the Control Panel cover and Decora wallplate.

Caution: Do not overturn or use excessive force on control knobs or blinder levers — use a small straight-blade screwdriver for the dials and your finger for the blinder levers.

Operation

Push-Button: Toggles the lights. If OFF, pressing turns lights ON and they remain ON while motion is present. If ON, pressing turns lights OFF regardless of motion until the time-out expires — useful for presentations.

The Motion Indicator LED blinks every 2 seconds while motion is detected. In Manual-On mode, the button must be pressed to turn lights ON (keep the Light knob fully CCW for this mode).

Troubleshooting

• No response 1.5 minutes after power is applied (light never turns on, LED never blinks): Uninstall the device and verify a ground connection at the wall box; if grounded, verify the wiring.
• Lights never turn on automatically, but do turn on via push-button: Check the Service Switch is in AUTO; check the Ambient Light knob isn't pointed fully CCW (rotate CW until lights turn on).
• Lights constantly stay ON even when unoccupied: Check the Time setting against actual on-time; try lowering the Range Control about 30° CCW (don't reduce so much it can't see normal occupancy); use the blinders to block unwanted hallway traffic; check for reflected heat/motion through a window; check for adjacent HVAC/heater ducts.

Warranty

Leviton warrants to the original consumer purchaser that this product is free of defects in materials and workmanship under normal and proper use for five years from the purchase date. Leviton's only obligation is repair or replacement, at its option, if the product is returned prepaid with proof of purchase to Leviton Manufacturing Co., Inc. Warranty excludes labor for removal/reinstallation and is void if the product is installed improperly, overloaded, misused, opened, abused, or altered.
