    Installation and wiring instructions for the Leviton HCA02 Decora Home Control System Amplifier/Repeater — a 2-phase coupler that boosts power line carrier (X10/DHC) signal strength across both 120V legs of a residential 120/240V or 120/208V electrical system.

    Introduction

    Installing the Cat. No. HCA02 System Coupler/Repeater assures sufficient signal strength throughout 2-wire power line carrier systems. The HCA02 amplifies the command signal onto both 120-volt legs of the power system to ensure good signal strength throughout larger homes. The HCA02 should be mounted in a wall box as close to the circuit breaker panel as possible.

    Note: Decora Home Control power line carrier components are for residential applications only — any other use voids the warranty.

    Installation Instructions

    Warning: to be installed and/or used in accordance with appropriate electrical codes and regulations. If you're not sure about any part of these instructions, consult a qualified electrician.

    Caution: use this device only with copper or copper-clad wire. With aluminum wire, use only devices marked CO/ALR or CU/AL.

    To Wire

    1. Warning: to avoid fire, shock, or death — turn off power at the circuit breakers or fuses and test that power is off before wiring!
    2. As shown in the wiring diagram, the BLACK and RED leads of the Amplifier/Repeater must each be connected to their own 15A circuit breakers.
    3. Remove 3/4" (1.9 cm) of insulation from each circuit conductor. Make sure conductor ends are straight.
    4. Connect lead wires per the wiring diagram: RED lead to its circuit breaker on Phase A, BLACK lead to its circuit breaker on Phase B, and the WHITE neutral lead to Neutral. Twist each lead's strands tightly together with the circuit conductor, push firmly into the appropriate wire connector, and screw the connector on clockwise, ensuring no bare conductor shows below it. Secure each connector with electrical tape.
      Note: for 120V applications, cap the BLACK lead with an appropriately sized wire connector and secure with electrical tape.
    5. Mount the device in the wall box using the adhesive strips provided. Mount a blank wallplate over the wall box.
    6. Restore power at the circuit breakers or fuses. Installation is complete.

    To Operate

    • When power is applied properly, the GREEN Power lamp lights. When the device detects a DHC signal, the GREEN Power lamp blinks momentarily.
    • When the HCA02 is wired into a house with excessive electrical noise, the RED Error lamp blinks — this alone doesn't indicate a problem; a DHC Intellisense® system will operate even with a large noise signal (though non-Intellisense® units may encounter problems). If the device isn't receiving a DHC signal (GREEN lamp not blinking) and the RED lamp is blinking, that indicates a possible noise problem.
    • Use the Test switch to verify Repeater operation. Pressing it transmits P1 ON and P1 OFF codes continuously until the switch is pressed again or a DHC signal is detected from another device.

    Wiring Diagram Reference

    The wiring diagram shows two 15A circuit breakers feeding the System Coupler/Repeater: the Hot (Red) wire connects to a 15A breaker on Phase A (120VAC line), and the Hot (Black) wire connects to a separate 15A breaker on Phase B (120VAC line), with the Neutral (White) wire connecting to the system neutral. The unit itself is labeled "DHC System Coupler/Repeater — 2 Phase, Network Integrity Product" and includes Power/Signal, Error, and Test indicators.
