    Dimmer / Bulb Compatibility

    Choosing the right dimmer and bulb combination helps ensure carefree dimming. Not all dimmers are designed to control all types of bulbs.

    Dimmer Type Function / Application Helpful Hints
    LED (Light Emitting Diode) Works with dimmable LED bulbs; some models also compatible with incandescent, dimmable CFL, and magnetic low voltage bulbs. Provides full-range dimming, smooth start-up, eliminates flickering. Good dimmer/bulb pairing avoids flickering, limited range, slow start-up, or inconsistent illumination. Confirm bulb packaging says DIMMABLE. See leviton.com/LED for a compatibility tool.
    Incandescent/Halogen Works with incandescent and halogen bulbs. Not designed to control LED bulbs (not LED rated) — using them may cause inconsistent or limited performance.
    CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) Works with dimmable CFL bulbs; some models also compatible with incandescent, dimmable LED, and magnetic low voltage bulbs. Confirm bulb packaging says DIMMABLE.
    ELV (Electronic Low Voltage) Works with electronic low voltage transformers and dimmable LED power supplies; used for track lighting, under cabinet lighting, LED strips. Requires a neutral wire; pairs well with LED bulbs. Also called trailing-edge/reverse phase dimmers.
    MLV (Magnetic Low Voltage) Works with magnetic low voltage transformers; suitable for recessed lights and under cabinet lighting. Magnetic low voltage transformers tend to be larger and heavier than electronic low voltage.
    0-10V LED dimming protocol for a DC control signal varying 0-10V; common for fluorescent dimming ballasts and some LED drivers; used in high-end residential/commercial spaces. Know the maximum "sinking" current needed; divide sinking capability by source current per ballast to determine max ballasts controllable.
    Fluorescent Works with fluorescent fixtures using rapid start bulbs and dimming ballasts. —

    Wiring Options

    All dimmers are designed for single pole, 3-way, or multi-location applications. Some models support both single pole and 3-way — check the packaging for the proper configuration.

    • Single Pole: Controls light(s) from one location.
    • 3-Way: Controls light(s) from two locations — typically a dimmer at one location for ON/OFF and brightness, with a 3-way switch at the second location for ON/OFF only.
    • Multi-Location: Controls lights from three or more locations for larger rooms/areas, with the dimmer at one location and dimmer companions at the others; all locations can switch ON/OFF and adjust brightness.

    Decora Smart Wi-Fi Dimmers can also be used with wireless Wire-Free Dimmer Companions, which adhere to any interior surface to create an additional dimmer location without wiring.

    Decora Smart Wi-Fi Dimmers

    Leviton Decora Smart dimmers bring app control or voice command dimming with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home/Siri. Enjoy scheduling, full-range dimming, adjustable fade rates, and more, with wall-mount and plug-in options.

    • D26HD — Dimmer: Connects to Wi-Fi and the My Leviton app for wireless dimming; voice control via Hey Google, Amazon Alexa, or Apple Siri; app control of light level or schedules.
    • DN6HD + MLWSB — No-Neutral Dimmer and Wi-Fi Bridge: Ideal for older homes without neutral wiring in the wallbox; remote control, scheduling, and voice command without requiring a neutral wire; requires a small, discreet plug-in Wi-Fi Bridge for smart functionality.
    • D2MSD — Motion Sensing Dimmer: Adds hands-free motion detection to a smart dimmer; use the My Leviton app to set up and adjust schedules, dimmer, and motion sensor settings including night preset light levels, motion snooze, and room occupancy response.
    • D23LP — Indoor Mini Plug-In Dimmer: Affordable way to add smart dimming to any room without wiring — just plug into an outlet; voice or app control; custom settings for preset light levels, fade rates, and bulb types.

    Decora LED Dimmers

    The Decora brand has set the industry standard for style and performance since the first Decora switch in 1973.

    • DDL06 — Decora Digital: Decora rocker switch for On/Off with a separate dim/bright bar; includes ability to set maximum brightness, low-end dimming range, and fade rates.
    • DSL06 — Decora Slide: Slide bar to control light level.
    • IPL06 — IllumaTech: Separate On/Off preserves the set dimming level.
    • 6674 — SureSlide: Varies by model — either a rocker switch or push-button switch.

    Traditional LED Dimmers

    • Trimatron Rotary (RDL06/RNL06): Switch lights On/Off by pushing the knob; adjust brightness by rotating the knob.
    • Toggle Slide (TSL06): Traditional toggle switch turns lights On/Off; a separate slide bar moves up/down to adjust light level.

    Lamp Dimmers

    Provide dimming control for plug-in lamps — no wiring required.

    • TBL03 — Table Top: Cord from the outlet plugs into the dimmer; the lamp's cord plugs into the dimmer, which sits on a table or desk for easy access.
    • 6250 — Cord: Installed directly on the lamp's cord to regulate light level.
    • 6151 — Socket: Replaces the standard bulb holder on lamps, allowing dimming by turning the knob.

    Common Lighting Terms

    • Watt: A measurement of the rate at which electrical energy is dissipated.
    • Lumen: A measurement of illumination or brightness — the higher the lumen value, the brighter the bulb.
    • Kelvin: LED bulbs have a "color temperature" measured in Kelvin — lower values appear warmer, higher values appear stark white.

    Heat Sink & Derating

    Some dimmers have a metal mounting strap with fins to dissipate heat. In multi-gang applications, fins may need to be broken off before installing — refer to the installation instructions for when fin removal is necessary. Derating reduces the wattage capacity a dimmer can control when multiple dimmers share a wallbox, and is NOT required when using dimmable LED or dimmable CFL bulbs.

    Neutral Wire & Ground Leakage

    Neutral Wire: For dimmers with higher ratings or advanced technology, a neutral wire (generally white) may be required as a "path home" for the additional electricity used to power the dimmer.

    Ground Leakage: Some dimmers require a ground connection, similarly needing a small amount of additional electricity — released through the ground line while maintaining complete safety.
