Getting Started Guide for the Leviton Decora Smart Z-Wave 800 Series Dimmer (Cat. No. ZW6HD) — a Z-Wave dimmer compatible with any Z-Wave enabled network, offering app, schedule, and voice control of connected lighting.

    Overview

Compatible with any Z-Wave enabled network regardless of manufacturer, and with any device displaying the Z-Wave logo. This dimmer can also act as a repeater to increase Z-Wave network reliability. It looks right at home with other Decora in-wall devices and features intuitive on/off and dim/bright control.

    • Works with dimmable LED, dimmable CFL, incandescent, and MLV lighting.
    • Do not use with metal wallplates, electronic low voltage, motor loads, or aluminum wire.
    • When two or more dimmers are installed next to each other, load ratings become 500W incandescent and 500VA MLV per dimmer (no reduction needed if the load is LED or CFL).
    • For compatible LED bulbs, see leviton.com/led.

    Features

    • Off means off: Ensures low-wattage LED bulbs always turn OFF fully.
    • Rocker: Press top to turn light ON, bottom to turn OFF; double-press top for maximum brightness with no fade; double-press bottom for OFF with no fade.
    • Dim/bright bar: Manually adjust light levels.
    • Brightness indicator lights: Display light level when adjusting brightness.
    • Status LED: Illuminates when lights are OFF (find it in the dark); provides connectivity feedback.
    • Air gap switch: Stops power to the dimmer — gently pull bottom out until a click is heard; push back in after servicing.

    What You Need

    • A Z-Wave compatible hub.
    • A Z-Wave mesh network — install the device within 50 feet of the hub or another Z-Wave repeater (exterior surfaces may reduce transmission distance).
    • An interior switch wallbox with line (hot), load, neutral, and ground wire.
    • For 3-way/multi-way control, a wired DD00R or DD0SR Companion device.

    Installation

    1. Identify your wires: Warning — turn off power at the circuit breaker. Remove wallplate and disconnect existing switch; restore power and test wires with a voltage tester to find the Line (Hot) wire; turn OFF power at the breaker again. Mark the wires — a Neutral connection is required.
    2. Wire your dimmer (single-pole): Work only one connection at a time; connect wires as shown using included wire connectors. Neutral connection is required. The YELLOW/RED traveler wire is only used in 3-way applications — put a wire connector on it even if unused. If your wallbox has a different configuration, contact Leviton Technical Support or an electrician.
    3. Test and install: Restore power to confirm the dimmer is receiving power, then turn power back OFF at the breaker before completing installation. Push wires into wallbox, screw dimmer to box, snap on wallplate, restore power.
    4. SmartStart: This dimmer is SmartStart compatible — enabled devices can be added to a Z-Wave network by scanning the Z-Wave QR code on top of the device, on the strap, or on the back of the unit box with a compatible SmartStart-supporting controller. The device is added automatically within 10 minutes when switched on within network vicinity.

Adding the Dimmer to a Hub

Setup mode: Hold the top rocker for 7 seconds — the Status LED turns AMBER, release, and it will blink AMBER, indicating setup mode. To exit, hold the top rocker for 7 seconds until the LED turns AMBER; the device returns to normal operation.

Network Wide Inclusion: Enter setup mode; follow the Z-Wave controller instructions to enter inclusion mode; tap the top rocker 1 time — Status LED quickly flashes GREEN; complete enrollment per the controller's instructions. Status LED flashes GREEN 4 times to confirm success (RED 4 times if unsuccessful).

Classic Inclusion (for older controllers): may need to be 3-35 feet from the device depending on controller age. Enter setup mode; follow controller instructions to enter inclusion mode; tap the top rocker 1 time — Status LED flashes GREEN; controller confirms successful inclusion.

Exclusion: Best practice for removing devices from the network. Enter setup mode; follow controller instructions to enter exclusion mode; tap the top rocker 1 time — Status LED flashes GREEN; controller confirms successful exclusion.

Customization (Setup Mode Required for Each)

    • Minimum dim / maximum brightness level: Adjust to increase LED compatibility. Tap top rocker 5 times (min dim, LED flashes RED/AMBER) or 5 times then 2 (max bright, flashes RED) then use the dim/bright bar to set the level; hold top rocker to exit (flashes AMBER to confirm).
    • Preset light level: Tap top rocker 7 times (flashes RED/AMBER); use dim/bright bar to set desired preset; set to 0%/OFF for "Return to last level" (the default behavior). Hold top rocker to exit.
    • Fade on/off time: Tap top rocker 6 times (fade on) or 6 then 2 (fade off); use the dim/bright bar to set the time per the chart below (Instant = bottom LED, 30 seconds = top LED, values in between at intermediate LEDs).
    • LED dim/bright bar behavior: Tap top rocker 8 times; use dim/bright bar to set timeout duration (Instant through 240 seconds, or No Timeout).
    • Status LED configuration: Tap top rocker 4 times, then 1 (ON when load is ON), 2 (ON when load is OFF / locator mode, default), or 3 (OFF).
    • Bulb type / control timing (advanced, via Z-Wave controller): Bulb type parameter #8 (0=Incandescent, 1=LED, 2=CFL, 3=MLV, default 1). Control timing parameter #9 (0=Normal, 1=Medium, 2=Extended, default 0).

    Factory Default Reset

Use only when the network primary controller is missing or inoperable. Hold the top rocker for 14 seconds — after the first 7 seconds the Status LED turns AMBER; continue holding until it flashes RED/AMBER, then release. The device will reset.

    What to Do If...

    • Light turns ON but dimmer can't change level: Confirm the dimmer has line (hot), neutral, load, and ground connections, and the WHITE conductor is a neutral.
    • Dimmer won't dim low enough or flickers at the low end: Use the Customization procedure to increase the minimum dim level to a point that doesn't cause flicker.
    • Intermittent operation: Confirm the load doesn't exceed its ratings.
    • Cleaning: Use a damp cloth with mild soap. Do NOT use disinfecting products, foggers, sprays, or other atomized cleaning agents.

    Safety First

    • To avoid fire, shock, or death, turn off power at the circuit breaker/fuse and test that power is off before wiring.
    • To avoid fire, personal injury, or property damage, do NOT install to control a receptacle, motor, or transformer-operated appliance.
    • Use with compatible 120V dimmable LED/CFL, incandescent, halogen, or MLV fixtures only; use a Leviton electronic low voltage dimmer for solid-state low voltage transformers.
    • Do NOT mix bulb types on the same dimmer — using the same make/model per bulb enhances dimmer performance.
    • Not compatible with standard 3-way/4-way switches — requires up to 4 Decora Smart DD00R-DL or DD0SR companions for wired multi-location dimming.
    • Maximum wire length from dimmer to all installed companion devices: 300 ft (90m). Recommended minimum wallbox depth: 2-3/4 in. Use with copper or copper-clad wire only.
    • Dimmer may feel warm to the touch during normal operation.

Additional ratings: Purpose of control — Operating Control; Action Control Type 1; Pollution Degree 2; Impulse Voltage 2500V; Disconnection Type Micro.
