Installation and operation manual for the Jasco / GE Z-Wave Certified In-Wall Wireless Smart Switch (Model ZW4003, part numbers 14319/14320), covering wiring, Z-Wave network inclusion/exclusion, factory reset, and multi-switch (3-way/4-way) installation notes.

Overview

This in-wall, wireless, Z-Wave-certified smart switch turns a connected lighting fixture ON/OFF manually or remotely via a Z-Wave controller. It can be included in multiple Groups and Scenes, and used in a single-pole installation or with up to two Jasco Add-on switches in 3-way or 4-way wiring configurations. Compatible with all incandescent and CFL/LED bulbs. Uses a standard toggle wall plate for single-gang installations (wall plate not included).

Important

The fixture controlled by the Z-Wave In-Wall Smart Switch must not exceed 960 watts (incandescent). The switch is designed only for use with permanently installed fixtures.

Wiring Warnings

WARNING — SHOCK HAZARD: Turn OFF the power to the branch circuit for the switch and lighting fixture at the service panel. All wiring connections must be made with the power OFF to avoid personal injury and/or damage to the switch.

This device is intended for installation in accordance with the National Electric Code and local regulations in the United States, or the Canadian Electrical Code and local regulations in Canada. Consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure or uncomfortable performing this installation.

Important: This switch is rated for and intended only for use with copper wire.

Wire Gauge Requirements

• Use 14 AWG or larger wire suitable for at least 80°C for Line (Hot), Load, Neutral, Ground, and Traveler connections.
• Wire strip length: 1" (25mm) for screw terminal attachment; 5/8" (16mm) for attachment using the enclosure's holes.
• Screw tightening torque (per UL): 14 kgf-cm (12 lbf-in).

Installation Steps

1. Shut off power to the circuit at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Verify power is OFF to the switch box before continuing.
2. Remove the wall plate.
3. Remove the switch mounting screws.
4. Carefully remove the switch from the switch box — do not disconnect the wires yet.
5. Match the screw terminals to the wires connected to the existing switch (up to five terminals: LINE, Neutral, LOAD, GROUND, TRAVELER).
6. Disconnect the wires from the existing switch, labeling them according to their previous terminal connections.
7. Connect the green or bare copper ground wire to the GROUND terminal.
8. Connect the black wire that goes to the fixture to the terminal marked LOAD.
9. Connect the black wire from the electrical service panel (Hot) to the terminal marked LINE.
10. Connect the white wire to the Neutral terminal (use the included jumper wire if needed).
11. Insert the switch into the switch box, being careful not to pinch or crush wires.
12. Secure the switch to the box using the supplied screws.
13. Mount the wall plate.
14. Reapply power to the circuit at the fuse box or circuit breaker and test the system.

Note: The Traveler terminal is used only for 3-way or 4-way wiring and should remain insulated if the switch is installed in a simple 2-way system (one switch and one load). For 3-way installations, refer to the Jasco Add-on Switch (45741/45761) manual. Connecting the traveler terminal to a standard, non-Jasco switch will cause damage or improper function. If part of a 3-way/4-way installation, do not connect the traveler wire or apply power until the Jasco Add-on switches are correctly installed.

Single, Dual, and Triple Gang Boxes

When installing in multiple gang boxes, it may be necessary to break off one or both sides of the scored tabs on the front yoke. This does not affect the electrical rating of the switch.

Basic Operation

The connected light can be turned ON/OFF two ways:

1. Manually from the front panel of the in-wall switch — press and release up on the toggle to turn ON; press and release down to turn OFF.
2. Remotely with a Z-Wave controller.

Adding the Device to a Z-Wave Network

1. Follow the instructions for your Z-Wave certified controller to include a device on the network.
2. Once the controller is ready to include the device, press up and release the toggle to include it.
3. Once the controller confirms inclusion, refresh the Z-Wave network to optimize performance.

Once included, you have full control to turn the fixture ON/OFF (or dim, if applicable) according to groups, scenes, schedules, and interactive automations programmed by your controller. If your Z-Wave certified controller supports Remote Access, you can control the fixture from mobile devices.

To Exclude and Reset the Device

1. Follow the instructions for your Z-Wave certified controller to exclude the device from the network.
2. Once the controller is ready to exclude, press up and release the toggle to exclude it.

To Return the Switch to Factory Defaults

Quickly press the ON (Up) button three times, then immediately press the OFF (Down) button three times. Note: Use this only if the network's primary controller is missing or otherwise inoperable.

Z-Wave Association

This device supports Lifeline (association group 1), supporting 1 node for lifeline communication. Group 1 must be assigned the Node ID of the primary controller where unsolicited notifications will be sent — the Z-Wave controller should set this association automatically after inclusion. Lifeline association only supports the "Device Reset Locally" function; refer to your controller's instructions for setting this.

Z-Wave Interoperability

This product can be included and operated in any Z-Wave network with other Z-Wave certified devices from other manufacturers and/or applications. All non-battery-operated nodes within the network act as repeaters regardless of vendor, increasing network reliability.

Safety Warnings

• Not for use with medical or life support equipment — Z-Wave enabled devices should never be used to supply power to, or control the On/Off status of, medical and/or life support equipment.
• Exercise extreme caution when using Z-Wave devices to control appliances. Operation of the Z-Wave device may occur from a different room than the controlled appliance, and unintentional activation may occur if the wrong remote button is pressed. Z-Wave devices may automatically power on due to timed event programming, which — depending on the appliance — could result in a hazardous condition.
• Do not use Z-Wave devices to control electric heaters or any other appliances that may present a hazard due to unattended, unintentional, or automatic power-on control.

Warranty

JASCO Products warrants this product free from manufacturing defects for two years from the original date of consumer purchase, limited to repair or replacement. This warranty does not cover consequential or incidental damage to other products used with this unit.
